The Official Recommendations Thread

there many verisons of superhero comics.. which superman comics should i read? the original and the one that was in the movies and the upcoming movie?

Hey port, there's hundreds of Superman books out there, alot to get lost in. IMO, To be perfectly honest, alot of them are only soso and not really worth getting (unless you're just a BIG superman fan)

but one I would strongly recommend to anyone is a book called Superman: Secret Identity, which is about Clark as a young Man when he's first starting his career as both a journalist and as Superman

I need some help finding some good Marvel and DC books or any comic books. And seeing as I am a little OCD I need to start at least at a new story arc.

Well I am sure there are plenty of good reccommendations. It really depends on who you like. X-Men, Hulk, Spider-Man, DareDevil, Captain America, Avengers, Silver Surfer, Doctor Strange, Fantastic 4, Namor, Alpha Flight, X-Factor Dr. Doom, Thanos and so on.

For the Hulk as Peck has mentioned I highly reccommend Hulk: The End, although hard to come by it is a great hulk story as well as Hulk: Future Imperfect which is also very good

The whole story line dealing with Venom is good, Secret Wars, The Thanos Quest and IG saga along with Silver Surfer Vol. 3 34-59 to follow along with it.

X-Men Days of Future Past, Dark Phoenix Saga.

Those are some of my reccommends.

try clicking on "thread tools" when you're in it and select subscribe.

if that doesn't work, I'll be putting the link to it on the first page of this thread

Yeah, I tried that. That's when it tells me the thread is closed. No biggie.

Just curious, how are you deciding which ones to put in there? The first few are definately top notch, but I'm sure you'll get to the point where the choices aren't as obvious. Maybe when you get to that point, you can make some companion "poll" threads, and have a vote-off to see who makes the cut.

I won the bid for Triumph and Torment that Elija pointed out. I didn't say anything about it earlier just in case someone decided to be a dick and beat me just to be mean. Thank you very much for pointing it out :doom:

Also, would you guys recomend Showcase Superman? Are the storys in there actually good or did they get a bunch of reandom supes stories that aren't even halfway decent?

it's not about which books are "worthy" to be put over there, it's about which books have a good write up. Anything with at least moderately professional sounding summary and review of, oh, like 200 words I'll put over there. The first two that're there I started with because there're the most thorough write-ups I think we have, that's all

depends if you like older stuff. Personally, most comics from before around 1986 I can't really read because they're written with such a different style that's not as entertaining or mature, and it's a boring struggle to get through alot of them. Oh sure, I respect the classics. Alot of writers had brilliant ideas. But while I respect the concepts, it's the execution that disinterests me. But that's just me.

The only Showcase I own is Green Arrow, which I only have because I'm a big GA fan.

so I'd just say it's a matter of A. can you read older books and enjoy them? B. how big a Superman fan are you?

I was wondering why you didn't recommend Demon in a Bottle for Iron Man earlier.

eh, it's part of my "old comics have great concepts but don't read as well as moderns" perception

...Okay, you have another Kirkman zombie in your ranks--picked up Invincible Vol. 1 and enjoyed it. I think it was slightly overhyped by you guys, but it was cool enough for me to want to continue. I'll probably get Walking Dead sometime soon as well.

did you get the hardcover or the softcover? because if you got the softcover, oh, you ain't seen nothing yet

Softcover. I take it there's some wild s**t that happens next?

the hardcover collects the first three softcovers and is cheaper than they are put together

and yes, some sild **** happens next

Well, my shop didn't provide the hardcover, so I had to settle.

Just for future reference, any comic store can get any trade that's still in print in stock and have it there within a week. It'a amazing how many people don't realize this.

MY guys even get me out of print tpbs and issues, some stores are just amazing man, if you're good to them ther'ye good to you.

...I love them a little.

I am without a doubt picking up the Invincible HC at the end of the month.
