If Sam Worthington gets the role, I refuse to watch this movie. I love Zack Snyder and Superman, but Sam Worthington is one of the worst actors EVER.
EVER!
I wouldn't refuse to watch any movie simply because an actor I don't favour happens to be in it .....................there's much more to movies than just the lead actor. But I agree otherwise, there are many more people I'd rather see in the role than Sam Worthington.
Sam Worthington's name seems to crop up every time there's a high-profile movie needing a male lead in his 20s/30s ............ but I've yet to see any really standout work from the guy. He was 'ok' in Terminator, 'ok' in Avatar and 'ok' in Clash of The Titans. He didn't really showcase any broad range, or even appear that different film to film, and his accent kept dropping. Asides from all that, he's not big enough to play Superman at 5"10.
And Clint Eastwood used to play only western roles and Robin Williams and Jim Carey played only comedy roles. What a shame it would have been if they weren't cast in other type of roles to show their true ability and diversity on camera. Joe was a classically trained theater actor. Having taught television and film acting, I am of the opinion that Joe has much more potential than what typecasting going on here is giving him credit for. The Joker was a complete surprise role for Heath Ledger to get and I was excited about it, though most didn't see the fit. They are actors for a reason. Some have more potential than any of us could ever see. Some end up being a total disappointment. Joe has more charisma and talent than Routh has, so we are already ahead in that case if he were to get the role. I am not on the Joe "bandwagon" as some refer to it, but he is one I would have no problem with getting the role.
Very well put.
I've been a Joe supporter since day one, and to be honest I'm getting a bit sick and tired of some of the replies on here.
Constructive criticism is fine, and if someone doesn't like his nose/build/whatever that's totally understandable - everyone has their own unique opinion on how Superman should look, though this obviously falls within the range which the role can allow - he needs to be a decent size, certain age, strong jawline and features, etc - just as he's always been drawn. But beyond that, everyone has their own particular features they'd like to see.
But to write him off simply because he plays 'thuggish roles' just displays a shameful narrow-mindedness. The same people need to get a dictionary out and look up what 'acting' means.
Joe's a big, well built guy. There aren't a lot of roles out there which will suit a broad shouldered 6"5 guy, believe it or not. So it's understandable when starting out that he played roles which required someone physically intimidating, just to get his foot in the door. Actors can't be too picky about what they're given when starting out. But as mentioned, the guy is a classically trained theater actor and has done a lot of more varied work since then.
And there's one role in particular - which we're discussing - which is
perfect for someone with Joe's height, physique and look.
I doubt very much Joe will play a thuggish Superman. He will play Superman as Snyder writes him, which is hopefully commanding, powerful, but kind and compassionate. He has displayed some of those qualities already in his role as Alcide on TB, but he's had to restrict himself a fair bit as no matter how much of a good guy Alcide is, he's still a werewolf underneath - with a lot of aggression. He could lose that inherent aggression completely if playing Superman/Clark Kent.
