I think that's a little different. He's being rough on criminals in that page.

In the Morrison preview, he's taunting the cops. That's messed up. He's supposed to be on their side.

edit: okay, a reread of that page makes me see it a little differently. But it says in the first caption box that an innocent life was on the line. I'll give some leeway on life-saving situations. But there was nothing life or death in Morrison's preview. And the cop taunting is still not Superman, no matter what the situation is.

so that's an acceptable excuse? Pa Kent would be rolling in his grave.

I did the last time I got pulled over for being Black on a day that ends in Y. :o

Under my breath of course.

It's impressive how seamlessly the fanbase has shifted from "Superman is a boring boy scout with no personality" to "Superman is too dark and edgy I WANT THE BOYSCOUT BACK!"

Superman is acting like a total *****ebag in Action Comics #1. It's insanely out of character.

I've always liked the boyscout aspect. I like the idea of an alien embodying the best of humanity.

That doesn't mean he should be naive, which I think was a major pitfall for Superman writers sometimes. He should understand how messed up the world is, but refuse to fall into the human fallacies like greed, pride, etc.

That's a big assumption.

I'm not saying I want him to be the Superman we know he will eventually be immediately. But it seems like every single hero nowadays has to turn from a *****ebag into a hero.

I've seen Iron Man and Green Lantern. It's trend lately to turn people from unlikeable to likeable to show character growth. That's not the only way for people to mature.

Superman should be represented as the best of humanity because of Ma and Pa's influence. A story arc that forces Superman to realize the difference between being simply a good man and the best man he can be I think would be more worthwhile than seeing him go from arrogant teenager to mature adult.

I don't really see Superman's behaviour as *****ey here. This isn't JMS having him toss skeptical reporters into the sky. And people trying to present him as a bastard or whatever are totally overreacting.

From these pages alone, it's already clear that Morrison is depicting Superman as a wide-eyed idealist who has a very clear-cut, moralistic view of right and wrong, and is tired of corruption and beurocracy getting in the way of that. He can't abide bullies, even if they wear a suit or carry a badge. It's an attempt to put Superman back in touch with his "socialist man of the people" roots.

Just because he's operating outside the establishment doesn't mean he's not noble, decent and inherently good. When people say Batman is cooler than Superman, they always point to Batman being the outsider and Superman being your safe "dad hero", the obedient government stooge upholding the status quo. Hell, Frank Miller made it literal in The Dark Knight Returns. Morrison is demonstrating he doesn't need to be that in order to still be Superman.

You're right, he's not the perfect, fully-formed hero he usually is during his first adventure. This book is doomed.

I can only imagine these people reading the first issue of Batman: Year One:

"Batman is getting beat up by prostitutes, and he's WEARING JEANS! Totally out of character! Not buying this book!"

Another thing people tend to forget is Boyscout Superman did not show up until after WW II and the government started cracking down on comics. Before then people tend to forget Superman use to punch first ask questions later, or give people the option that they could either go through him or out the window (to their death) and use to use people as lawn darts.

I think we will see the Superman we know and love sooner or later (more or less in the Superman comics before Action) but in the same I think that with him being so alone it will take time to see that and we should see it through Lois, Jimmy, Wonder Woman (since they are suppose to be an item later on), Lana and Perry.

I'm still unsure, i think i'll have to see how the next isue will be like

If standing up to corruption and telling it to **** off is being a *****e then we need more *****es in the world.

It's the return of Golden Age Superman 2011 style. That was my favorite version of the character so :woot: :awesome:

I need this book NOW!!!

Do you guys think Morrison gonna use some unused Superman 2000 stuff? this seems like what he was getting at back then aside from all the stuff that made it into All-Star Supes.
