The Official Superman Thread

does anyone have an opinion on how they are bring Chloe Sullivan from Smallville to the comics and how they are changing what makes her who she was in the show and what she's gonna be in the comics?
 
They didn't give a s**t about all the stuff they changed when they made Smallville, why should anybody care what they do with any characters they decide to swipe to the comics?
 
um ok...lol someone seems to have a ton of scorn for Smallville lol

I don't mind the show...I mean you will never see Superman but I don't think its bad for what it is...
 
I think it's horrendously bad for what it is. It's poorly written and getting worse every season. The first couple of seasons weren't too bad, but it's been trying to put one foot in genuine superheroics and keep one foot in reality for the last 2 or 3 years and, frankly, the showrunners just have no idea how to do that effectively. As a result, it's a big, muddled piece of crap. I've tried watching it again and again because I figure, it's a show about the greatest comic book superhero of all time; as a comic book fan, I ought to be watching it. But it's so bad I usually can't make it through a single episode without shaking my head in disgust and walking away.

Regarding Chloe's entry into the comic world, I'm indifferent to it. I don't think she really needs to be there, but I doubt she can hurt much. It's not like Superman doesn't have a long, long history of grabbing material from other media, either. Dude can only fly because of the radio show from the '50s or sometime thereabouts.
 
I will agree it's getting worse ever season but I will admit I like their take on some of the other charecters they've introduced...as far as I know Season 8 will be their last and with the writers strike they wont be finishing the second half of this season so I think all the Smallville haters are about to get their wish lol....
 
Then there is some small measure of happiness to be gained from this writer's strike after all. :up:
 
I'm very testy about TV shows. They're easily the best cynic's affirmation on the planet right now. Terrible, terrible TV shows keep running year after year while some of the most interesting and thought-provoking pieces of entertainment are pushed to cancellation every season. I honestly wouldn't blame the writers if they just took the strike as an opportunity to get the hell out of dodge altogether. If not for the love of their craft and the TV and film mediums, I bet a lot of them would've left already, given the kind of crap that turns far larger profits (and thus gets far better treatment) than their best work for the studios.
 
thats true but we also live in the Reality TV era in which anyone can have their own show...nowadays its rarer and rarer to find a well written TV show...

back in the day you used to have alot of great shows on any given day...now can you name 5 or 6 really good shows off the top of your head...

TV just isnt what it used to be...now its all about Survivor 294937973, and shows like that lol...
 
Reality TV is a very big chunk of what I meant in my previous post. Why bother pouring your heart and sweat into writing the best damn scripts you can when the studios realize that the real moneymakers are cheap-ass reality TV shows with the same stupid, fixed plots (since nothing called "reality TV" is actually real) rehashed with different faces nine times a week? Or 'game' shows that don't even have the decency to at least involve some tiny modicum of skill or knowledge? Or mediocre drivel from talentless (but cheaper) hacks packaged as hourlong 'dramas'? Or soap operas or any number of other crappy, god-awful wastes of time in a medium that could be and has been the vehicle for modern-day, honest-to-God literature? The kind of stuff that is genuinely clever and largely original like Firefly (canceled), or that makes you take a good look at the nature of humanity and relationships like Journeyman (canceled), or the nature of the actual, broken systems that make the world go 'round like The Wire (ending in 9 more episodes).

But this is a wildly off-topic rant, so I'll stop now. Hey, Greg Rucka's Adventures of Superman sure was great back in the day, wasn't it?
 
lol we did stray way off topic but I do wholeheartedly agree with you...

Rucka's AoS run was phenominal...maybe i am in the vast minority but I happen to love Superman comics better 10 -12 years ago the way they were written then anything that come out in the past year or 2...

they kept everything consistant and together and everything was cohesive...and I''m sorry but Machievellian Businessman while secretly being an archvillain Luthor is my favorite...

this whole Silver Age concept to me is trash....im not a fan of many of these changes they are making and I never cared about the League of Superheroes to now have to with Superman being a member...
 
Oh, evil businessman Lex trumps crazy armored Lex by leaps and bounds. Every time I see that stupid green armor now, I get annoyed. It's fine if he decides he's gotta stomp some ass himself once in a while, but he needs to be the intelligent thinker that he used to be the vast majority of the time rather than the ******ed idiot he almost always is now.
 
I mean they made Luthor into such a great villain...he ws the President for gods sake!!

Everyone in the world knew he was bad and yet he could get away with anything...now he's just Superfriends Luthor...as a fan that was loyal to the comics for 20 years post CoIE its like a slap in the face what they are doing...

But at least Superman wont make a deal with Neron...because I could never imagine a real superhero in this day and age makin a deal with the Devil...

sorry...had to do it...it just makes me laugh....
 
Bringing in an annoying character like Chloe from a sometimes sucky show into the comics? :huh:
 
considering they are'nt bringing any of the weight she had as a character in the show with her to the comic I do'nt see any real point...

the only similarity she will have is that she's from Smallville and is Lois' cousin...

there's no interaction with Clark from the past since she will be about Jimmy's age so I dont even see the point to this...

I mean yes green k and Jimmy came originally from the radio serial BUT they kept the same incarnation from both...what we are getting this time is a completely different thing...

Its like they think fans of Smallville will rush right out and buy the comic because of the addition...

yes but those same Smallville fans that think they are gonna get Chloe from the show in the comic are gonna be disappointed and put the book right back down...

its too gimmicky the way it seems they wanna do it...

im sorry to say that i havent caught Salvation Run yet but from what I have heard it all the villains trying to escape a prison planet or something like that...

can anyone give me the rundown?
 
im sure this may have been discussed somewhere on here before but am I the only one thats irked by this absurd notion that Batman could beat Superman?

I mean I am a fan of both but I really feel that if it came down to it Bruce wouldn't have a chance in hell...
