That rumor I think is just that: a rumor.

The part he was supposedly auditioning for was for an 18 year old.

While I think it'd be great for Tom to do comedy (the pilot was for a multicamera sitcom) I also doubt he'd want to be a regular in a TV show after being the lead in one for ten years...

Tom Welling definatly matured into the role superbly, had Smallville been more of a mainstream success & kinda stayed a little closer to the percieved 'cannon' to keep fanboys happier, it would have been very fitting to have a Superman movie span off the series with the cast in place.
