The Official Toronto Thread

Welcome to Toronto! :)
Have you tried Yorkdale? And where are you originally from?

Well, it's just about patio season in TO!

BUMP!!! :D

Alright everyone, what are your favourite TO patios?

Gotta love the Maddy's labyrinth of patio space . Green Room and the Queen Mother have great intimate little backyard patios. The Black Bull is pretty good for people watching on Queen West.

I happened to go there on the 15th for lunch, enjoyed the patio and sun. Service was poor but chicken caesar salad was delcious, an abundance of chicken strips and lightly sauced not saturated.

I like the patio of Jack Astor's overlooking Yonge and Dundas Square.

I've frequented Pauper's Pub on Bloor a few times, but because I'm not a drinker... well, they really, really water down their soft drinks, so if I'm at a birthday party held there and I'm desperate I'll get one, but otherwise... ugh.

My first time to Toronto was pretty cool.

I was like 10 years old.

But the worst part? My family and I were walking back to our hotel and guess what passed us?

A freaking Gay Parade. I didn't know about gay people then so what was in front of me really freaked me the hell out. Why the hell were these beefed up men so close together and dressing in shiny underwear???

Then we got back to my hotel room and my parents explained to me and my brother about gay people.

Great vacation! We had fun and learned something along the way. PLus, there's a hell of alot of asian people there. Everywhere you look, there's an asian.

I'm dying to hit the Eaton's centre dt right now...

and we need a Montreal thread, just cuz I'm moving there in a few months, heh

I've never actually eaten anything there, come to think of it. Sure have drunk a lot though

Is it hard to get a table there? It looks neat but it always is rammed.

Anyone have a gram of dank they're willing to chop? LOL I'll meet you anywhere in the city and throw in a $5 tip. :o

i live an hour away from toronto. i've never heard any of this "most hated city in Canada" stuff though. Maybe thats just people from other big cities. anyway apparrantly Toronto is the most mulitcultural city in the world. When i'm in London, England though, people always tell me its the most multicultural, when i look online, i find both. so who knows. I was reading in another thread that Metropolis is based off Toronto. I had always though New York was Metropolis, but apparently New York is Gotham.

I remember going to a cool mall there. And I just remember it being in the summer of 2002 and seeing Men in Black II promotion everywhere.

It depends on the time of day and your luck, really, but I've eaten at that particular one about 4 times, twice on the patio.

The Bloor Cinema is the best theater around.

I prefer AMC or the Grande.

When I go to AMC blitzed I feel like I'm in a space ship. :o

Being a Rush fan, visiting Toronto to visit Rush sites was such a thrill: The Orbit Room, 189 Carlton Street, Willowdale, Fisher Junior High, the government building that's on the cover of Moving Pictures, Lakeside Park.

Even though I did this 9 years ago, it was one of the best "field trips" I've taken.

When I get the winter blues I head for Allen's Gardens. It's free and you get to see flowers and plants to remind you of spring.

Exploring the P.A.T.H. system is always great fun, you can find some weird and interesting stuff, once I came across a house inside a skyscraper that sold magazines that are hard to find elsewhere. Unfortunately, with the P.A.T.H. system it can be difficult to refind locations (unless you take a map with you and mark the fun things you find - I prefer to travel without the map).

You should also, probably, get a season pass for Ontario Place. They have some good concerts as well as the amusement rides and IMAX cinema. Better to do with a good friend or two.

Beyond that, if you haven't done the tourist thing yet, and if you have a week off you should get a Citypass. That will allow you to hit the touristy spots like the CN Tower, Casa Loma, ROM etc for a slightly smaller cost then regular admission.

Anyone know of a great romantic (i.e. dark lighting, candles) restaurant or bar along Bloor or within the Annex? I have a hot date happening sometime within the next two weeks...

I was thinking about going to Insomnia at Bathurst and Bloor, but I'd probably be too tempted to order their burger... and I don't want my date's first impression to be me making a mess with a burger.

If he digs you, he won't care.

The Queen Mother, for serious. I already mentioned the patio but the inside is pretty cool and dark and intimate. It can be busy though. I think they serve thai food? It's close to Queen and John.

Red Room at College and Spadina might be decent to. I've only ever been during the day but when I pass it at night it seems pretty dark and cozy.

Yeah but the Bloor has an awesome set up and plays old movies like Troll 2 and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Also, they sell beer on site. Lets see AMC do that :woot:

Annex is a bit of a student ghetto, so not a lot of romantic places around there.

I assume by your posting that you're willing to spend a bit more. There's a great Italian fusion place in Bloor West called Strata that's a great setting.

If you like books you could visit the Toronto Public Library at 789 Yonge Street
or The World's Biggest Bookstore at 20 Edward Street. Both are worth a look see.

I resent that :p.

It's true, though :(.

I'm not planning on dinner, and I don't usually drink, but I may try a fruity alcoholic drink... in which case, he'd probably pay for it. I'll check this place out. Thanks.

Wait, he's paying. So why was I worried about cost? Let's take him to the cleaners, sister.

Seriously though, another place that's actually less expensive, slightly, and more romantic than Strada (mispelled the first time, sorry) is Blu in Yorkville. Though a daytime lunch is a difficult setting for a softly-lit mood.
