Iron Man 2 The Official Whiplash Thread

Is it confirmed how much of a mix of Whiplash and Dynamo Rourke's character is? Because I was thinking that it could be more of Crimson Dynamo but called Whiplash due to Russia not being Red anymore and obviously Crimson Dynamo is a leftover from the old Soviet Union.

I doubt we'd actually hear the name Whiplash.

1)They already used it as the call signs of the 2 jets in IM1.

2)The didn't actually use the term Iron Monger in IM1. Whiplash sounds even lamer, so no way they'll use it.

Crimson Dynamo is the better name. Just because the old Soviet Union is no more doesn't mean the color red/crimson is out of style, especially if the suit itself is at least partially red-colored in some way.

Leto over at the 'Sam Rockwell is Justin Hammer mentioned something that gave me a theory regarding Rourke's character in IM2. He mentioned that in the early drafts for IM1, the Mandarin actually became the Crimson Dynamo.

Which made me wonder if perhaps Favreau dusted that idea off for IM2, only this time it is Whiplash who becomes CD. Which would possibly involve Rourke's character using "Whiplash" as code name prior to getting the armor, which is of course called "Crimson Dynamo", which Rourke then adopts upon using the suit. With maybe electrified whips included for close proximity fights.

I know its a long shot and admittedly not a good theory, but I thought it was worth putting out there anyway.

I don't think the Mandarin became the Crimson Dynamo. I think Mandarin and Crimson Dynamo were originally the baddies, and they replaced Crimson Dynamo with Iron Monger and then eventually decided to drop Mandarin for later films.

I do think that what we will see in this movie is a Whiplash character eventually donning Crimson DYnamo armor, though.

I do think that what we will see in this movie is a Whiplash character eventually donning Crimson DYnamo armor, though.

That's an asian guy in what was called the Crimson Dynamo armor during production of the first Iron Man. The late great Stan Winston calls it the Crimson Dynamo armor in one the behind-the-scenes segments.

It obviously became the Iron Monger armor. They redesigned the helmet (not pictured amusingly) to be more evocative of the Mk 1 suit. It was originally more slit-eyed. I think they also changed the back pistons or whatever they were called.

It took me a few searches to find the image. I think Marvel may have quietly retracted this particular picture from various places on the internet. It was consistently absent from sites showing the concept art.

It was a better idea overall to remove Mandarin from the first Iron Man. If I recall correctly they reimagined him as a rich playboy like Tony but who did terrorism on the side to fund his company and quench his thirst for global domination

Hell probably just start out as a general criminal possibly incorporating whiplash somehow then eventually get the armor, but ya i think like the first movie they wont even refer to him by either of those names.

I know that idea has been kicked around a bit ever since Rourke was first announced. But I have to say, if that turns out to be what the plan is, then I'll really be curious as how Favreau would handle that. Since that theory has always seem a little odd to me.

Hmm, I have to see more in order to make a judgment. I'm not necessarily against the back-pack thing(I'm guessing it's the engine that drives the suit like the Mark I had in the first film). I don't expect the CD armor to be as miniaturized/advanced as Stark's armor. It may be just overpowered but not as advanced kind of like the Iron Monger armor in the first film(only without being oversized). Definitely looks like they're going for a non-oversized look there. Keep'em coming.t:
