The Official Writer & Storyline Thread

Nearly EVERY aspect of Clark's life has been translated to live action and or animation.

And after damn near 75 years of stories we still don't have a MOVIE BRANIAC-WTF. Even Darksied is feesable after TDK

Even Clark as a reporter would be good-Can we just get to the Kryptonion version of Microsoft please.

Not too grounded, please. It's about time to see Superman going cosmic! I wanna see him fighting on the moon (but much better done than in SIV :woot:), in Space, stuff like that! We need more Sci Fi.

I agree. Supes is an alien who can fly into space; let's take advantage of that. Your idea could be done in the sequel to the upcoming reboot. You know how sequels are always bigger than the first movie. Superman's sequel could top the first movie by going into space.

I want to see Superman's full origin. So, i think it would be Krypton-Smallville-Metropolis.

Superman's origin could be told in a nonlinear manner. That might be the best way to show his origin to those who don't know much about Superman while not boring fans who are thoroughly aware of his life story.

Given the success of TDK, I think the studio will attempt to give the film a more grounded feel to it.

Superman being an unrealistic character in a realistic world would work well.

SR had SOME elements of it thanks to Bryan's style but ultimately came off as more of a fantasy/storybook-like film.

I think this is what WB means by 'Dark;' just going for a more realistic, grittier atmosphere without making the character of Superman dark.

Exactly.

And it wouldn't feel like a ripoff of Donner if told in a non-linear way.

Heck, even SR went Krypton/Smallville/Metropolis technically.

I know this would never happen but I always loved the animated Series intro to superman. First Episode was 100% Krypton, last scene is Kal-EL being sent off

In Metropolis, deal with his origins in flashbacks

Now that was good just dont want to see the whole origin yet again.

Let's think this thru ...

There is NO WAY to surprise an audience with Superman's origin. If someone has heard of Superman, they already know that he comes from Krypton. Having him going around as Clark and then discovering somewhere later in the movie that he's from Krypton would only be a surprise to that character. The people in the theater would already know. With that in mind, is there any reason to try to play around with making it a surprise to the audience?

Another thought that I've seen circulating thru these boards is to use Krypton in limited flashbacks so the story can concentrate on Superman from the top of the film. They could do that but it would imply that there was really nothing interesting about Krypton. That it's sole purpose in the story is to provide an explanation for his abilities. I've got to repeat myself here - I think there is a dramatic story to be told on Krypton .. and I'm not talking about some white haired Jor-el having a brief meeting with the council and then packing Kal-el in a flying chandolier and firing him off toward Earth. I would feel cheated if we didn't get a new, interesting Krypton with the reboot.

And, let me just point something out for those who keep commenting that you can't do a linear story here because Donner already did it. It wasn't unique when Donner did it. In fact, The pilot episode of the 1950's tv series did the same thing and it was in the movie serials before that.

While I agree that there could be an interesting story on Krypton, that's not what I want to see them spend any significant time on in the new movie.

The story is about Clark Kent/Superman, not Kal-El or his ancestors. They are an important part of his story, but not the bread and butter.

I'd have it start in Smallville, but not with the Kents finding Clark, but with Clark as a teenager at the time when he finds out he's an alien and when he decides to go off to travel the world. That way we find out about Clark's past as he does, we'll find out he's an alien when he does, and find how he becomes superman and it would be cool if the revelation changes him. Before, he's arrogant playing football always scoring touchdowns and having a big head and finding out he's an alien sort of deflates his head and makes him realise he has to use them for a reason.

Yeah, but that would be fine. You don't need to play it as a surprise for the audience, because obviously they already know. But I think it could be interesting to see Superman dealing with the fact that he's actually an alien, and coming to grips with that. For the majority of the movie no one would know exactly what he is, nor do the Kents. Then he finds out he's from another planet, his parents are dead, he has a deadly weakness, he's the last one of his kind...And how does he deal with that?

Personaly, though, I would start the story on Krypton and Supes would learn about his origins in his teens. He would still go through the drama I described above.

Yes. When he found out in the Rosetta episode of Smallville, it worked perfectly. We all knew he was from Krypton but the story is so powerfull and if shown in a right way, it can move the audience.

Agreed. It's time to move forward and explore other supervillains to challenge superman and other storylines. The Superman lore is so vast, and I can't believe WB and DC find it soo difficult to addapt several good and exciting stories for the movies... geez

You know its sad when Smallville is doing more with Superman than the movies ever did/wants to do (still stuck in The One Donner © version).

with the right story and writers seeing krypton/smallville stuff can be new and different.

What if the next Superman film were to start with an established Superman who doesn't know his Kryptonian heritage yet. Supergirl arrvies in an updated telling of her original origin spiced up with elements from her re-introduction in SUperman/Batman a few years ago. Use Brainiac as the villain and adapt the recent Braniac story from Action Comics in which Supergirl tells Superman all about Brainiac and Krypton's destruction, thus allowing SUperman to learn about his heritage and origin as well as giving Supergirl an interesting back story.

This would combine a number of elements that it seems fans want- Brainiac, established Superman and a flashback origin, but also critical to the Brainiac story at hand. It might seem like a lot especially including Supergirl, but I think it would definitely something different that we haven't seen before in a film.

would be interesting but who knows how it would fly with the wb execs and all that.
