The Official Writer & Storyline Thread

An opening akin to the origin recap that occurs at the beginning of every episode of "The Adventures of Superman" is my cup of tea.

"More powerful than a locomotive..........yada, yada......."

The film doesn't need to begin in Metropolis or even with scenes involving Superman or any of the main cast of characters, but it would begin in a world with an established Man of steel.
Not really because many fans want to see the origin of the villains he fights as well. Not just have them pop up already established already as well. That's why I love the Spider-Man movies because it shows the origins of the villains and shows how they got to be where they are. The only villain who origin was not needed was Nolan's Joker and that worked very well because in the comics his origin vary and in the movie you saw that so that works. But I think this movie if it is to be a reboot or a reboot of sort should start out as Superman Year One showing how he has to gain the public's trust. Being that he is an alien and has the powers of a God not everyone should trust him and you should see that. You should also see why Lex Luthor hates Superman as comic fans we know these reasons but as an average movie goer these are things I would like to see. If your going to start over completely do it right. Redo the Fortress and change the look of Krypton.

I'd start in Metropolis, with an already established Superman.

Ditto. If the origin must be addressed, handle it as a montage during the opening credits and be done with it.

I can agree with this to a certain degree because I for one would love to see this new Superman first meet Lex and him first meet Lois. I mean this is a new Superman we are talking about apart from Donner/Singer, Smallville, Lois and Clark, and S: TAS we need to see some of these things. Even DC understands this which is why we got Green Lantern's Secret Origin and why we are also getting one for Superman as well. These are somethings we need to see.

I like the idea of Clark doing his secret superdeeds early on in the film. Similar to what SuperDaniel and Man Of Tomorrow are saying with Clark only learning of his true origins thru Brainiac but ....

I really think we need to start on Krypton... and not the one note, boring Krypton of the Donner film. Jor-El as a rebel in a world of stagnant, sterile, and impersonal Kryptonians. I want to see him returning from his research in a fresh designed flying vehicle to the landscape of a Kryptonian city. I'd like to see him resort to covert actions to defy the High Council after being branded a renegade and a dangerous anarchist after failing to prove to them that the planet is in peril. I want to see the birthing chambers where Jor-el has to steal his infant son from to save him from the planet's destruction. Imagine Jor-el running from the law enforcers with his infant son ... (although I much prefer the birthing matrix ... I'll settle for the infant route). Tell me that wouldn't be exciting! He's finally blocked by Lara in his own lab (Kryptonians aren't coupled in this version... makes his need to be with Lois even more poiniant). He convinces her that baby Kal-el has a chance to - not only survive the death of Krypton - but to lead a better life on the planet he's been monitoring - Earth.

Jor-el launches the baby into space (and it better not just be a baby strapped in a space going car-seat) but, as the ship leaves our site... we see a bit of Brainiac (Kryptons sentient computer system that we encounter earlier in this part of the film) attached to the ship.

I think I've just explained why Brainiac works better if we start on Krypton first and given the film a lot of exciting action in the opening scenes. Clark can still learn about his true origins from a Brainiac attack on Earth. No Donner crystals on the Kent farm that call out to him and tell him his past. ....And... best of all....we've set the plot up for a supervillain..... BRAINIAC. He's come to Earth looking for the last remaining Kryptonian.

OH..... AND Donner didn't start the trend of beginning the Superman films on Krypton.... almost EVERY major reintroduction has done that. The Kirk Alyn serials start there. The George Reeve's TV series starts there (do you recall the 'borrowed' Flash Gordon costumes?).

Donner didn't invent that outline of events in a Superman film. He merely continued it... so let's not hear again how 'it's a Donner thing.

For the villian (save for Lex Luthor) a necessity, indeed the film could begin with scenes involving in a preliminary nature the introduction of the villian, but for Lois, Jimmy, Perry, the Kents, etc. characters that the GA are accustomed to, a re-introduction would only waste valuable screen and story time.
It is the mainstream iconically familiar elements of Superman, that would already be established at the film's onset.

Metropolis. Have a News Anchor in the opening scene giving a story about Superman's past great deeds.

The villain's? Lex, Metallo, and Brainaic. Metallo would be Lex's first attempt at trying to defeat Superman using a superpowered being. He fails.
Brainiac would arrive later, seeking out the Kryptonarian being he detected from space.

I could see them starting in Metropolis, or at least with Clark as an adult. Maybe not get into Krypton at all, keep the focus on Earth. It might be cool, if all goes well, to start the second movie in the series with an extended sequence on Krypton. It would be a cool way to expand the mythology and maybe introduce a Krypton-related menace in part II

Ever since I heard of the reboot, I've been wondering: where would you start the story? Would you start on Krypton, like the original film? In Smallville, like the TV show? Or would you skip all that and start the movie in Metropolis?

I would start with the Kents fiding Kal-El ship. Then start credits rolling showig clips of Clark childhood. Right after credits, Clark is a teeanger, grauating on high school.

No Krypton or whatever until his point. Audience should discover about Krypton and his heriditage at the same time Clark discovers all his background history by himself on the movie.

I would start with Clark travels and have some flashbacks to SV ala Lost and Batman Begins. I'd even have him working at paper over sea's and he would get a job at the struggling Daily Planet.

Metropolis. Established Superman.

I disagree. We don't have to start with the whole origin, but I would at least like to start with Clark arriving in Metropolis. I think we need to see Clark start to build relationships with Lois and the rest of the Planet crew.

It should start, with the spaceship crashing to ground... where Kal'el is essentially born into the outside world for the first time... from then on, the central narrative of the film should be 'who am I and where do I come from'

First off, Merry Christmas everybody.

Now personally, I would start off the night before he leaves the farm, in the kitchen explaining to Ma Kent why he must leave. To learn and explore why exactly Jor El sent him to this planet, and maybe in the process learn something about himself, insight into his father's psyche, and his birthworld...all that he can't quite get or grasp from listening to crystals.

Than I would probably send him to Africa and maybe explain why he chose to wear the costume... all before going to Metropolis.

My vote goes to Krypton. I'd like to see a completely new version of Krypton. We've gotten the icy type of planet Krypton in all of the Superman movies thus far, as well as Smallville. I think it's time for a new design.

I want a different design as well but i don't want a linear origin. Krypton can be shown in detail when Brainiac appears later on in the movie and Clark discover his origins.

I think John Nolan would be interesting, I don't think he is Chris Nolan-like in his realism schtick.

I would rather someone different though.

Yea i agree we dont need to have a realism take on superman since he is more scifi/fantasy more then batman we should make the next film sequel/reboot have that feel. Though do keep some things grounded in realism based things.

I want to see Superman's full origin. So, i think it would be Krypton-Smallville-Metropolis.

Full origin is the way to go
All the way from Krypton to Superman dangling Lex by holding him up by his neck on the roof of the Lexcorp building

I'd prefer if Krypton is avoided from this film altogether, it adds to the mystery.

Keep things grounded on Earth in a realistic world that encounters this unrealistic Superman.

Kick the film off with an adult Clark.

Not too grounded, please. It's about time to see Superman going cosmic! I wanna see him fighting on the moon (but much better done than in SIV :woot:), in Space, stuff like that! We need more Sci Fi.

They should start on Krypton, and establish a new Superman movieverse.
