Comics The one thing I don't get about the "Deal" is...

What bothers me about ending the marriage, is that after a while single Peter will be the same as married Peter. Spider-man's marital status should have almost nothing to do with his life as a hero. After a few months of Peter dating different women, that aspect of his life will begin to get stale. Then where do you take his character? The thing I enjoy most about Spider-man is the growth of the character. And now it seems like Joe Q wants to keep him frozen in time. This new direction just feels like 21 years of storytelling is being flushed down the toilet, like we're being taken back to 1987.

Has MJ been the focus of the Spider-Man books for the last 21 years? Does Spider-Man cease to exist without MJ?

It's The Amazing Spider-Man, not the Amazing Peter and MJ.

One thing I really don't get about this is what Mephisto gets in the big picture? Sure there's some misery, but why make MJ a hero? I mean doesn't he ususally try and get souls, alliegences and such?

Of course not on both counts, but she contributes to the guy in a pretty significant way, sure the story is mainly about Pete, but it details his life. She's a major part of his life, just cutting her out wont destroy the book outright, but it hurts what's go on for over a decade. Also as many people put it, it's going to make a slew of confusing continuity errors; so many things happened during the marriage, for example what'll happen to moments like when Kain kidnapped MJ and was going psycho? This is a bad idea in my opinion and I feel this story is pitifully executed; the divorce idea posted by a user above would have been a great, real world moment that could have potentially been a combo of a tear jerker and a satisfying end.

Exactly

I realize that the stories are about Spider-man/Peter Parker. But his supporting cast of characters, both friend and foe should be used in a way that moves the story of the hero forward. The idea that you can just introduce some magical or supernatural element into peter's world every time the writers have a hard time tying up loose ends, or bumping up sales for a while is lame. Spider-man isn't that kind of superhero. He isn't THOR, Silver Surfer, or even Superman. Peter is not a born hero, he's a tragic character, like Ben Grimm and Bruce Banner. He's an ordinary man dealing with something he never wanted, and dealing with sorcery should be kept to a minimum. Spider-man should be a hero, but Peter should be somewhat grounded in reality. And his supporting cast helps create this effect.

And the point is, that MJ in fact IS his wife now. That is where we are. JQ has stated he doesn't like the "marriage".

SO....it is silly to mutilate the marraige like they are now in such a silly fashion.

It would be not unlike JQ saying Pete having an OLD "AUNT" really ages his character.

And then write a story where Mephisto cures aunt may's bullet wound in return she is not his "aunt" anymore...and no one will ever remember that she is an "aunt". All to just force away a word....marriage/aunt....etc....

So while it is not "Spidey and MJ".....MJ does and HAS played her major role just as aunt may does. And to say, she can't be a wife.....and then turn her into a superhero instead.....is to do the same to aunt may....make her no longer an aunt to pete...and turn HER into a superhero.

It'd be just as cheesy.
