I've only seen the first two as well and I know that they're connected. The family in the 2nd is friends (related to?) with Katie from the first.

I still need to get around to watching the third one. I tried once before but just wasn't feeling it. Doesn't help that I already know what happens anyways though

I guess I'll spoiler tag this, even though PA2 is 2 years old now...

PA2 revolves around the sister of Katie from the original film...Katie herself repeatedly appears in the film, most of PA2 takes place prior to 1, they show you something that her sister's husband did in order to get the demon to target Katie instead of her sister, etc...

It's very directly connected, without having to see PA 3.

In what way were they connected? Or do I have to see the third film for more story elements?

Yea definitely see all three before you see this one. Each movie gives you bits and pieces of the overall plot of the franchise, PA 3 gives the most story elements out of them all so far though.

One thing I just thought about, its never explained what happened to the daughter from PA 2. I find it odd that she never looks for her brother that went missing or tried to find out what happened to her parents. Maybe they will explain it in PA 5 but I doubt it lol.

They're completely connected. The mom in PA2 (Kristi) is the sister of Katie, the girl in PA1. Katie and Micah even appear a bunch of times in PA2 and the title cards even explain when they appear that it's a few weeks before Micah's death, making this a prequel to PA1.

PA2 explains how the demon was originally after Kristi because it wanted her baby, and the stepdaughter uncovers some evidence that a great-grandmother may have made a deal with a demon years ago to give up a first-born male child, and there's a scene between Katie and Kristi where talk about "stuff with mom" that happened when they were kids.

At the end, Kristi's family exorcises the demon by sending it after Katie instead, basically setting up PA1. They thought that was the end of it, but in the last few minutes of PA2, which takes place the same night PA1 ends, a possessed Katie turns up at their house, kills Kristi and her husband, and takes the baby. So it got what it wanted.

PA3 opens with a few scenes between the adult Katie and Kristi, but then goes back to a bunch of VHS tapes from the 80s showing how the demon came after them back them, and the grandmother was involved, opening up this whole other plotline involving covens and witchcraft.

Well done summary! What do you think happened to daughter from PA 2? She is after all
Hunter's real sister.

The more I think about this film the more theories/questions I have.

Some plot holes that kinda bugged me was the fact that Katie took Hunter at the end of PA 2 but then gave him up for adoption, only to come back for him again? Weird. Also why was Robbie living with her? Anyway, I think Toby can shape shift or something because during a couple of the kinect scenes there was a third kid form following Robbie and Ryat AKA Hunter around. He able to shape shift because the kinect avatar was suppose to be Toby (or similar to what he looked like to the kids). Also the ending with all the witches and possessed Katie makes me think that there is something much bigger going on. Maybe like a demon invasion or something like that.

Hopefully we get some closure in PA 5. I can't believe I am saying this but I am really invested in the story in these movies now. I wasn't that big a fan of PA 1 or 2 but PA 3 really sold me on these movies, and even though this one isn't as good it plays it wayy to safe, I am still interested and look forward to PA 5 unless it ends up being utter crap like the Saw movies.

Just curious but is there an actual story to these films? I have only seen the first two but they''re not connected.

The first are extremely connected. The family is the sister of Katie from the first film and it explains why and how the demon started hunting Micah and Katie.

Thanks for all the replys. I think there was a long gap in between me watching the first and second film that I forgot they were family.

I'm assuming they'll get back to her at some point. They just haven't covered her story yet. Presumably she's still looking for her brother.

I think that was a plothole that failed the story, or least should have a better explanation:

I can get that Hunter was given to a 'regular' family - it was almost like the plot of The Omen 2, when Damien had a few relatively normal years with his adopted family after the events of The Omen before finding out who he really was - but a better plotline would have been to make Alex's mother part of the coven, make her involved in how Hunter had gotten there. It certainly would have explained the adoption. Instead, they just made her a lifeless character who just gets snuffed out randomly at the end of the film. Have her turn on Alex at the end - or even initiate Alex into the coven at the end. That would have been great.

Again, I still think:

They should have built up the impression that Robbie was Hunter more, and make the reveal that it was actually Wyatt a bigger twist. The kid who played Robbie was great, they could have had a lot of fun with him as the evil kid. We didn't even find out who he was - maybe he could have been Toby in human form, as if he wasn't really another kid at all. That could have been fun.

As far as:

Wyatt/Hunter, they didn't give him enough to do. If you notice as Katie is carrying him away at the end of PA2 (which opens this movie), Hunter starts giggling. Is Hunter supposed to be good or bad? Instead he seems reluctant to come with Katie, and you can't tell much from his expression just before the witches come after Alex at the end. They could have expanded on that a lot more. People have been waiting two movies to find out what the deal was with Hunter, it seemed like this was just wasted here.

Just so many wasted opportunities in this one, when they had a lot of potential to expand on the mythology and create a lot of new scares that could have been really fun.

I agree this movie had a lot of missed opportunities to expand the mythology.

I was actually expecting the father to have something to do with it. His behavior was kinda shady, always working at convenient times. He conveniently laughed off the footage of the ghosts, acting like his lack of tech savvy made him ignorant to the obviously creepy footage. Plus there was a throw away line that he was the only one who Hunter would let touch him as a baby. He took Alex out of the house at just the right moment. Then he conveniently sent her into the house while he went and chased after Katie. I was expecting the big reveal was going to be him having a hand in it.

Anyway, my review:

It is good, albeit a bit underwhelming. Too much of it felt like setup for the next one. It is almost like a redo of PA3 set in modern times (at least in terms of moving along the mythology). It basically says, "Hey everyone....just wanted to let you know that Katie and Hunter are still rolling and the cult is still active in modern times."

Plus I feel like it got a bit hacked on the editing room floor. For example, Alex is having trouble sleeping? We weren't given this information until she is jacked up on sleeping pills.

Furthermore, it is called paranormal activity but it is surprisingly light on the activity. There is the knife incident, the bed lift and then not much else until the climax. The kids do creepy things, but it is mostly just them watching people and standing aimlessly. And when the activity does happen, none of the characters respond. Ben and Alex are recording it, but we never see their reactions to it. Ben just falls off the radar about half way through the film, then shows to get killed. Same with Robbie. He just disappears. This is unfortunate as these two are the best characters in the film.

That being said, it is not without its benefits. Both Robbie and Wyatt are creepy as ****. I loved the twist with Wyatt being Hunter rather than Robbie (though it does raise the question as to who Robbie is and why Katie gave Hunter away to begin with). Plus this movie has the best characters of any of the PA films. Ben and Alex are so very likable, it is unfortunate that they met the fates that they did. Finally, the mother's death to the climax is crazy creepy.

It is easily the weakest of the films (6/10, IMO) but still entertaining and watchable. I think it will be much better if it is watched back to back with PA5 as this one feels very much like a first act rather than a standalone movie. Assuming of course that PA5 is not another prequel that deals with Robbie's origin which I think would be a HUGE misstep. It needs to keep moving forward and to an extent get back to its roots.

My review

Well, I wasn't expecting anything at all and yet I was still kinda disappointing. There was a lot of playing by the numbers with the first 3 films, but their new scare tactic with the Kinetic was just ok. With the story, I was let down that they didn't answer a lot of the questions but you can see this to play a bigger part with the next film. The end credits is what really scared me, just on the fact it's something completely new and different. Which is kinda sad that your end credits was more frightening than the entire movie.
7.5/10

Where it ranks for me among the other PA films...

PA 3
PA 1
PA 2
PA 4

I hope PA 5 goes in the way it was shown in the end credits scene.

After seeing part 4, I thought that this may be a series similar to the Star Trek series. Every other installment isnt very good. I love the first and third entries but two and four didnt do much for me.

Same here, which is why it makes me hope PA5 will be really good.

I was thinking the same thing. I guess we'll know for sure if they get around to a part 5.

I wonder how many entries they plan to make. Saw was planned for 8 but killed at 7. This series needs a good ending that explains everything, but I feel like 5 won't be that ending.

I haven't seen this one and probably won't until the DVD but yeah, they really need to explain some of the stuff from PA 3, if they do plan to make a fifth.

So if that after credit scene leads to a spin-off, I wonder if we'll get a PA-type movie in the summer time and then PA5 in Halloween. It'd be pretty ballsy to double dip like that.

I doubt that. Studio's too cheap for all that noise. The after credit scene is gonna be PA5.

Remember in PA 3, there was a box full of old video tapes? I wonder if the next one will be a prequel/middlequel featuring one of those tapes.

At least one of those tapes was labelled "1992", so I'm assuming there's some more story there.
