The Penguin The Penguin on HBO - General Discussion

What am I looking at? lol

I have no problem with Batman being left out. It's Penguin I'm interested in more.

I’m fine with this. I love Pattinson’s Batman, but if his presence doesn’t serve the story then I’m OK with bailing on the fan service. If the show is good then we shouldn’t feel like he was missing by the end of it.

I'mma be real

If I was them getting asked this question, I would answer it this exact same way both if Batman wasn't in it and if he was. Wouldn't surprise me if he winds up making a cameo anyway and this is to sorta limit expectations of it.

Could also be legit, which would be fine. But I do honestly hope there is a cameo in there or at the very least mention of Batman being on the scent of the goings-on in the show. The idea of Batman being completely in the dark about the implosion of the crime family who he already has a vested interest in just doesn't sit right with me

Yeah I'm honestly really disappointed in this. Let Batman be in a Batman related show ffs lol

I don't think I could disagree more

I don't have any real interest in seeing Batman on screen except every four to five years so I'm perfectly happy for him not to show up again until Part II. I'd be hyped to see Pattinson but this is both extremely unsurprising and a non-issue. If it's even true and there isn't a secret cameo.

I'd be happy with them talking about Batman. Like, hey did hear what Batman did last night? That'd be fine.

I'm not a fan of cameos just to make cameos and ultimately, it's up to the series not to make us feel Batman's absence.

But in the context of this series, whose storyline will apparently be in continuity with the film and stretches over ten hours or so... I think his presence should at least be felt.
It would be weird to see Oz doing his thing, shooting opponents left and right, blowing stuff up, etc., without ever being particularly worried and then, in the next movie, seeing Batman pop up next to him for x reasons...

We'll see!

Maybe we get Batman imitators. But yeah, I'm fine not seeing the Batman here. We know he's out there anyway.

I just found out that the series will be broadcast here in France through Max.

The platform has only been around since June, and I'm not sure it's yet well established or well known (HBO has never had any representation as such here).
Plus the catalog isn't comparable to the American offer, since Warner and HBO productions are still spread out between Netflix, Prime and even Paramount TV (especially DC content), making it a very uncompetitive offering for the moment...

I wonder if this will have an impact on the numbers here.

Changing his name to be more grounded is pretty eye-rolly and unnecessary but I'll get over it. Doesn't Carmine call him Oswald in The Batman??

Ah, it looks like they did change Penguin's name after all, but it's not the one we were thinking about. :funny: As mentioned above, his first name remains Oswald (with "Oz" serving as a nickname), but his last name was, in fact, shortened to Cobb. Personally, I don't mind the change; it's negligible and better fits this modern interpretation of the character—a man of modest beginnings.

I seem to recall Penguin being referred to as Mr. Cobb a few times in the issues of Tom King’s series that I’ve read. Granted, that had him in hiding after faking his death, but still.

I just wonder if this is genuinely his name or if “Oz Cobb” is what we opted to call himself to spare himself the snickering that “Oswald Cobblepot” would elicit from the likes of Falcone and Maroni, etc.

I believe it is. His mother, portrayed by Deirdre O'Connell, is listed as Frances Cobb on the official press release and other sources.
