    Happy Thanksgiving, Guest!

The Photography Thread - Part 1

I'm not a photographer by any means but I have to admit that I am proud of this picture. It's of a distant family member's barn in Wisconsin. Keep in mind I took the picture from the window of a speeding car.

Eery!

Thanks for the advice guys! :) I shot the rest of the days in both RAW and JPEG using just my 50mm lens and I really saw the difference when I was processing the photos. I am definitely going to start shooting in RAW from now on. I love it. I ended up having some other problems like cropping issues and in some cases, really extreme changes in lighting that could not be fixed, but overall, I'm much happier with how my photos came out this year.

Here's my Flickr where I uploaded all of my photos. I'll post some of my favorites here though.

I'm pretty confident that this was the issue. The camera was choosing the focus on its own, so for poses where the person had something pointing towards me, that was what was getting the majority of the focus. I found a way to work around it by shifting the camera to set it focus on one thing before moving it to get the right framing.

But as for the shutter speed, I was tight that 1/30th was the lowest I could go to avoid the camera shake. But to be safe, I ended up shooting mostly between 1/80th and 1/125th. I also had my ISO set to auto, although in some cases it would go as high as 3200, so there was some sacrifices I had to make.

Like I said earlier, I had this problem once when I was trying to shoot at friends wedding and ofcourse other than the photographer, nobody else was allowed to use flash.

Again, if you have trouble focusing on the right subject, try changing your where you meter on central focus. For instance, my Rebel series had only one cross type AF and it's in the center, along with a few on the side that are not cross type. You can set your focus meter on any of the dots. For instance, for macro, I use the center focus (if I'm not using flash). If I am using flash and I don't have to worry about lighting, I would kick up your exposure to 1/100 or higher and change your aperture to about mid-range while still using center focusing so you can be assured the area where you center is going to be in sharp focus.

Great candid portraight shots, keep them coming!

Shot, processed, and printed by me.

Wow, I have never used a dark room before, but these shots have a unique style you can't find anymore. Where do you buy your film these days?

Here is I did today at high noon, with a few outtakes and no real editing besides white balance. I so need to get a ND filter. Anyone know of a good one? Price doesn't matter, long it's not 500+.

Good control over the lighting on a sunny day! As for ND filters, I'd say Singh-Ray but, since I have one already, I can tell you it's not worth the price. I'd go with something like Hoya, Tiffen, or B+W. I might buy a new one that's cheaper and see how it performs against the Singh-Ray.

The Singh-Ray one I have has a warming filter as well and if used properly, it's fine. But the problem is, if you jump to level 8 in density, open your wide angle lens, and use long exposures, you get this shadow artifact on the image that is just inexcusable for the price.

That's great that many people like this style over digital. I knew a guy that used dyes instead of inks for his work and he did some amazing stuff. The color intensity and detail were out of this world.

I'm having some upload issue woes but I found a work around to show some pictures I took this past weekend when we went around the Ozarks / Branson / Jasper area for a little site seeing and hiking.

I was in New York a couple of weeks ago for a long weekend and had my new camera with me. Wandering back to the hotel one evening I was snapping shots here and there...

This one turned out to be interesting, the car speeding by just added something to it I felt.

Really like that third one.

Five of my photos, four of which can be seen in this thread, were rejected for submission into a literary and visual arts magazine my school has. At least this year, I got a personal rejection letter. Had my name on it and everything.

Art College only got me a 'free' Macbook Pro, so I've been on the hunt for a DSLR...

Finally got one. It's a D5000, in mint condition. All accessories, the 55mm lens, and a 200mm lens... all for $250. Major, major steal.

I'm so happy, my Minolta XG1 was almost useless. I can finally stop using mr Sony Bloggie/iPhone/Kodak X712 as photography crutches.

that is a steal

i'd love to have a macbook pro though lol

Nice Pic Thalidomide!

Never underestimate the power of the iphone!!!

We'll now that the results are out I think I can post about this. I submitted 6 prints to the annual nipa exhibition and and managed to get 4 chosen out of the final 100. Over 400 prints were entered.

Kinda surprised but very happy seeing as this was my first attempt at the exhibition itself. So that's two separate exhibition acceptances in one week. :)

Congrats! You deserve it. :woot::woot::woot:
