I agree. I agree. Even if you use guide numbers, if your outside in really, really harsh sun (IE, NM) it's out the window. So I always have to tell the people I'm shooting I have to get take a few snaps to get in the ball park and use EV and adjust from there. I hate doing that, but gotta do what you gotta do until I afford a light meter, IMO.

If ya got the cash, doesn't Pocket Wizards offer TTL for Nikon too? I'm okay with TTL on Camera (Events), but it still looks flat to me overall even after compensation. But I think Nikon's version is better than Canons, tho. Despite I've been bouncing a bit, which helps out.

I never figured out that guide number system... If they tell you the guide number at ISO 100, then what about higher ISO's? Bracketing shots is easier.

Pocket Wizards. Oh yeah, US$169 for the transceiver/ radio slave. US$199.00 for the transmitter. And it won't say if it works for film cameras. And they don't work for cameras and speedlights older than the D70s. I bought a Hahnel Combi set for AU$112.00, with a guarentee that it works for my old Nikon. I'll leave those Pocket Wizards to the pros who make money out of photography.

Shooting at high noon can be the most challenging scenario to get portrait shots. I prefer natural lighting, but around high noon your best friends are a reflector, or filters, or a good flash.

Hehe. I figured it out, just annoying figuring out how many stops a light from a box, brella, or whatever your using to diffuse the light. That's where fast glass comes in handy. Still, in really bright harsh sun it's out the window. Guess and check until I get the meter.

I don't see why it wouldn't work for film to be honest. That's something I would look on the net a little bit about, and if ya buy 'em, and don't like 'em I'll take them. =)

The Pocket Wizards are designed to compliment the current technology of the digital SLR's. So it won't send the signals from the camera's computer to the remote flash and adjust them. Film cameras like my Nikon F100 doesn't have the i-TTL technology that new DSLR's have for Nikon's Creative Lighting System. That's why I settled for the SU-4 despite the fact it needs at least two flashes to work.

The first time I realized I needed a flash during the daytime was last year in Hawaii. I took a picture of my brother and my niece during lunch time. But the sky and sea was so overexposed because I metered my brother, who was in shadow. Now I can just edit that in Photoshop, but it's always better to get it right the first time.

All right. I see what your saying, and that sucks. Either way, G'luck with your endeavor on that, tho. =) It's going to be a shocking world, and I never see things like that again. Unless I have to use on camera, I still bounce best as I can.

Yeah, when I did that guy up there I had a few blown out skies, but as someone said, it's better to meter for the subject and get them lit than the sky. For down here, with this brought sun sometimes that's all you have, them or blown out sky. What would you take? =)

Did my first family shoot today, and I had to use one flashgun bare, and lemme tell ya, it sucked (Compared to that softbox). To windy at the park, and they moved to a lot of different locations with their daughter and I had hour and half to until work. I winged it, and didn't turn out to bad.

I got back the photos from my flash test. The SU-4 setup is still too bright for my tastes. It must be that my master flash is too strong, even at TTL settings. I didn't sufficiently diminish the shadows with the slave flash. I had better luck doing a remote fill-in flash effect so that the subject inside a building won't contrast too much with the outside in broad daylight.

Nice as always! I really need faster glass to pull off those type of band shots, maybe one of these days. Have no real interest in it as of yet, love the challenge of events, and portraits. =D

Ouch. ETTL isn't very reliable half of the time, IMO. Maybe you can adjust flash exposure? Or you can bring down the flash power manually? Other than that, I think your going have to look into a light meter.

Latest gig and 2nd senior! I got about good 30 to 40 shots, so it was really hard to narrow down. Yes, I used GN's and chimped. =) The only editing I did was white balance, and cropping!

1) My fave hands down outta that session! EXIF data intact for this one!

In other news, Olympus has stopped making 4/3rds mount lenses, which means I'm going to have upgrade my kit sooner rather than later.

Nice work!

Here is moi trying to use a small space to work in; wish I had so much more room. The hardest thing was my camera was about 12 feet away so getting full frame was a challenge since this is a crop sensor. =/

Strobist info:

High Key:

45 degrees about 3 feet away at 1/4 power.

Low Key:

125 degrees 2 feet away at half power bounce for fill.

Reflector on the bottom so I wouldn't get to much glare on my glasses.

Great lighting technique and thanks (to you and Comic Chick) for the compliments.

I bought my DSLR back in June and I am enjoying the hell out of it. I've never used off-camera flash and the idea intrigues me.

How much would it cost for a decent mountable flash, tripod, umbrella, and reflector?

Thanks for the comment! I just noticed that one shot of them on the slide, holding the baby. The bag I cloned out. =) Posted the wrong one up, oh well. One with the girl with the trees was just using one light as well, along with that family above.

It took me long while, shooting, and reading to get where I'm at. I started with one light which I would recommend. Be prepared to be utterly confused, and in a world of hurt but it's rewarding. Right now I'm in the proccess of getting pro gear, like Pocket Wizards and stuff like that. This is a good start, for this is what I started with or still using.

I held a used Nikon D1H and Nikon D2X. The latter was formerly used by the Australian navy!

I just read up on proper lighting and I'm going to eventually invest in a setup like the one you initially got. For now though, I'm still playing with my camera. I just bought a new Canon macro L lens for it and plan on taking out to the local botanical garden and test it out. I read somewhere that using built in camera flash outdoors is actually a good idea. Have you ever tried it? Thanks for the tips!

Pop up - SUCKY unless you can control the lighting which is hard. You get red eye, flat lighting and everything since you'll be close to the lens of the camera axis. Your better keeping your camera off flash, or bouncing it with a on camera flash, IMO. I mean it can be done good, but that's usually what happens compared to the other lighting. Your right, tho. Learn the camera, I still am, but just little things like better sharpness (Distance) and such.

L Lens already? Jeez. I haven't even gotten that far! Then again I'm the only one working so it takes a little bit longer to get stuff like that, but I'm slowly saving. I'm actually looking at Tamron right now instead of Canon L lens. Just waaay to rich for my blood. I'll see as I progress.

I admit, the L Lens is pretty pricey, but I don't think I will buy any other lens again as I have every type that I will want to use. I have a 18-55 EFS lens, the Tamron wide angle, a Canon EF 70-300mm ultrasonic lens, and now my new baby, this Macro 100m f 2/8 lens. I'm complete! You're probably wondering how I could afford all these right? Well the 18-55 came with my camera, the Ultrasonic and Tamron i bought with my gambling winnings in Vegas, and the L Lens I bought for 800 bucks..(normally a 1100 dollar lens). So all in all it ain't too bad.

Hahaha. Nice. I'm actually looking at Tamrons right now, about 3 of them. Total of 1.5K. But I'll get a wide angle, 24 - 70 and 70 to 200. Then I'll start saving up for a FF camera, as I'm waiting to see what Canon announces end of this month or beginning of next month. They say releasing a new FF. Despite I currently have kit lens: 18 - 55. 55 -250, and Nifty Fifty. The only lens I spent for was the 50mm. Freaking love that lens for 100 dollars. The rest I got with the camera, along with a 250 external HD. I love Newegg's deals. =D

I don't have that kinda like with Vegas, I lost with what I did spend a few years ago. Just about 50 since we we're there more for the sights, and that's what got me serious again for shooting to be honest and learning OCF.
