True, I mean the fact that I was using an advanced P&S which gave me more control than a standard P&S would helped me understand all of the different aspects of photography. My sister has a DSLR and last time she came to visit, I borrowed it and pretty much knew how to use it and what to adjust, whereas she didn't know anything about it since she took all of her pics on auto.

Oh I'm definitely not knocking P&S cameras. I love mine, especially because I know how to control my shots. Plus the fact that I was able to get such high praise in my class against the other students, who had really great shots themselves, speaks to how well mine holds up in comparison.

But what I'm saying is that I haven't been happy with the quality overall lately when I compare similar shots with others, and its mostly because of the limit I have with depth of field and how I always have trouble in darker areas. With that said, I don't usually like to use flash and I can definitely use more practice with that. But I think my issue with my photos have been with how "flat" the subject looks in comparison to the background, and I think I may need to start changing my focus settings.

Now there are a bunch of mirror-less compact cameras in the market that you can attach a manual focus lens. Although they are about the same price as some of these entry level DSLR's, they can achieve somewhat similar performance.

Nothing awesome, but just thought it would be amusing. I wish I had a bigger "bumpkin" according to my son. Either way, I shot all of these OCF 1/4 power manually on my flash.

A few of my kid on Monday, and trying to get bouncing flash down on camera so when your "Shoot & Gun" situations. Sorry for the noise, I had to shoot ISO 1600 (Using a Rebel XS) for almost no light in the room, and what there was tried to bring it in while freezing him.

Looks great! I'm in Arizona again right now for business and I regret that I did not bring my camera. I had the opportunity to scale one of the hills around Phoenix and all I had was my crappy cellphone camera.

Great pics guys. I'm looking into getting into photography myself. What's a good starter camera...?

Golgo-13,

Depends on what you want to do. How serious? A lot of camera's that aren't DSLR still have a lot of creative control, and still cost a lot less. The one I'm currently using right now is a DSLR, and about 500 give or take.

Just if you get serious, expect to be in a world of hurt unless you have money for this hobby. Next year I'm expecting to build my own little studio, and better glass. Looking at about 5 to 6 grand to do this. This is just tip of the iceberg stuff.

Midnyte_Sun,

Thanks! The only reason why I took it out this time was practice on bouncing. Other than that, oddly, I've been taking my wife's point and shoot more. I guess it's due to what I carry with me now. Hahaha.

Oooh interesting thread here. Alot of great photos in this thread may I add! Unfortunately I'm stuck with a samsung point and shoot (though it is a very good one, it can bring out some rubbish pictures sometimes!)

But I am at Uni, now, which means I can rent out their cameras pretty much whenever I want (which I plan to do often, as well as the video camcorders). Anyway The camera I have with me this weekend is Canon 550. So far I love it, and I think after I finish Uni, I will definately look into buying one of these (well, probably a later version, but a DSLR).

I just got it this weekend to have a mess around with, and get use to handling before my trip to birmingham convention next weekend. I'll upload some of the pictures tomorow, although I'm sure some of them will look very amateurish compared to some of yours!

I moved out to Arizona last spring and it's really igniting that interest to start taking pictures again. Went up to Flaggstaff through Sedona about a month ago and just saw so many amazing picture opportunities on the road. Thinking about trying to get a nice new camera around Christmas

FYI: Your Avvy still says Chicago. I was in Flagstaff this summer and you're right..it was absolutely beautiful and mesmerizing.

yeah yeah i know, its not as cool as iron maiden or alice cooper but hey its work and looks great in a portfolio lol

I've been having the same thought myself. I ended up buying a digital camera last week. Been testing it out. When I make a Photobucket account or whatever , I'll start posting.

I like digital point and shoots for their convenience. I'll try to post some of my first digital cam pics soon.

This one was taken with my first digital cam point and shoot:

It's been quite awhile since I've taken any pictures. I hope once my film is done, I can spend more time on my photography.

Fantastic shots man. It's nice to have good lighting throughout the event. How far away are you typically standing?

for most rock gigs, maiden, leppard cooper i'm in the pit so pretty close. most of the pop divas i'm back at the soundbooth so about 19m so around 60 feet away from the stage

This what I started off with (Real cheap & Works like it too, but a good start):

Stands, Brella and mounts:

Flashguns (I now have three, and working on getting more):

Triggers:

Alistair,

I am really considering getting that flash starter kit that has the umbrellas and tripods, etc.

If I get for instance, the Canon 280Ex or 580 EX II Litespeed flash and mount it wireless, how is the flash triggered? Is it triggered with a separate triggering device or can it go off by a timer on my camera?

What I really plan to do with it is possibly shoot some small community events, definitely family photos and portraits, take it outside when I go to a park, and also possibly mount it on my camera when I want to shoot video.

Lucky man. Do you use flash photography when you are up close or does that wash out the natural lighting?
