The Prequel Trilogy General Discussion and Appreciation Thread

If they were to sweeten the deal and edit the deleted Padme Rebellion scenes back into the movie then I'd definitely see it in theaters again.

As it is it's blowing my mind how we're coming up on 20 years since the prequel trilogy ended.

I wasn't planning on seeing this rerelease since I saw ROTS something like 5 times in theaters back in 2005 but I have really been enjoying the audience reactions to this on Youtube.

Still don't like the prequels. All I can say is just wait for the sequel kids to grow up and start telling you how they like the sequels and they really aren't that bad. But it is nice you get to see them in theatre if you never got to. I was happy when they released the Original Trilogy in theatres so enjoy your saga on the big screen.

Maybe, but I don't think it'll have the same staying power. Love them or hate them, at least the prequel trilogy was visually different than the OT that people still talk about. And this opening for a 20 year old movie has to go beyond just nostalgia. I mean, Van Helsing's 20 year re-release wouldn't quite have the same kick lol

Hell, people loved Serenity back in the day comparing it favorably over Revenge of the Sith but now that's mostly forgotten. Not much discourse even online.

One thing about Star Wars nostalgia is that it's not just about nostalgia for the movies themselves, but also the overall hype around each movie. Regardless of how you feel about the movies themselves, it's undeniable that the frenzy around the prequel trilogy was huge, especially with The Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith. Attack of the Clones less so (Spider-Man more or less stole its thunder that summer) but it still had a ton of buzz and merchandise.

There were also a good chunk of people who went to see ROTS this weekend who were too young or not even born yet when it came out and wanted to experience it on the big screen for the first time, similar to my generation when the special editions of the original trilogy came out in 1997.

Compared to the sequel trilogy, The Force Awakens had a ton of hype that rivaled The Phantom Menace but it dissipated a bit with each sequel. The Last Jedi had a lot of buzz but the divisiveness around it prompted The Rise of Skywalker to feel like an afterthought. Even though TROS made a billion, The Mandalorian was the Star Wars property that was drawing all the attention around the time it was released. Case in point, there was barely any merchandise released for TROS and a little over a year later the stores were drowning in Grogu and Mando merch. I can see kids who grew up with the sequel trilogy having nostalgia for it but given that Star Wars felt so much more of a rare occasion during the time of the Original Trilogy and Prequel Trilogy I don't think it's going to be as impactful as this ROTS rerelease or the Special Editions in 1997.

I feel like Serenity (and Firefly) still had a lot of buzz going before all of the Joss Whedon controversy news broke. It's like his two Avengers movies are the only things he's done that aren't completely tainted now since they're not his characters.

I should mention I was referring to the re released special edition of the OT in theatres, that was done right before the prequels. I am not old enough to have seen the OT upon release. The special edition was a way to see the OT in theatre in the late 90's. So it is really cool to put these movies back in theatres, I'm sure George Lucas enjoys the fact that his movies get to be seen and heard how he intended them to. Don't forget how much tech he developed or helped advance just from these movies.

Rewatching Sith on the big screen, there are some weird and flawed characterizations and relationships and yet both are still better than in Clones and the main ones still work, are at least effective and believable enough to great.

The visuals and action are impressive yet excessive and yet the excess usually feels notable but not exactly bothersome, usually feels at least understandable if not appropriate for being in the last film. The general dark tone, going so far with it and the violence, also feels notable but deliberate and understandable to appropriate for being the last film and intentionally being such a contrast.

Clones had some big parallels with TESB but I think more with ANH, in Sith aside from the opening rescue of Palpatine and the very opening space battle I don't think there were a lot of parallels with ANH, there were some, a lot more, with TESB.
