The Prequel Trilogy General Discussion and Appreciation Thread

I like AOTC....:( Moreso than ROTS.

I really love AotC too, it's at the bottom of my Star Wars list but I still love it. Dooku was a very interesting character I thought and I loved Jango Fett. The Tatooine stuff was excellent. I thought Kamino was an awesome planet and the detective work Obi-Wan did there was great.

I loved the end on Geonosis with the Clone Wars starting. Love love love the part where Anakin duels Dooku with two blades (wish it were longer), I have to watch that part at least a couple times whenever I watch that duel. I also love the lighting during the Anakin Dooku duel where they are basically just lit up by the blades. The movie's not flawless by any means but I still very very much enjoy it.

I do enjoy Revenge of the Sith a lot more though. :oldrazz:

The prequels are underrated, there are bad elements like most Anakin parts but they're not the abominations diehard fans make them out to be, in my opinion Return of the Jedi was as flawed as Return of the Sith

Revenge of the Sith is equal to the OT and surpasses ROTJ. There, I said it.

I appreciate that there was an overuse of CG, and my own preference for seeing practical effects, but Lucas created some of the most iconic imagery in modern Sci-Fi cinema.

ROTS is my favorite of all 6. Mace Windu's defeat of Palpatine and subsequent betrayal by Anakin was a sublime piece of writing.

Agreed. You knew it had to happen, but it was still heart wrenching.

My stance on the prequels:

TPM is good (underrated even) and I love it's bright and childish tone, it fits perfectly for Episode I, but has it's apparent flaws no doubt.

AOTC is by pretty far my least favorite SW movie. Editing and storytelling is shoddy althrough, the CGI and/or visuals are too cartoon-ish at times, Hayden is uneven as Anakin etc. I do like some things though, like the mystery plot with Obi-Wan and the Tatooine scenes with Anakin.

I love ROTS and hold it in the same high regard as much of the OT. Everything came together here, George got more comfortable with directing after warming up and experimenting in TPM and AOTC. The effects are great and I love the visuals of the movie as a whole. That intro tracking shot of the space battle is amazing! Hayden really stepped up his game from AOTC and so did Portman. I like their interaction and the love feels real, the scenes at Mustafar between them really breaks my heart.

As for the prequels as a whole I don't get the hate. Even though some of the films are uneven and quite flawed, I still love what the prequels brought to the mythos. I love how it expanded the live-action universe, I loved seeing the awesome duels, I loved getting new and fantastic SW music from Williams, I loved Ewan as Obi-Wan, I love everything involving Ian as Palpatine, I loved many of the new characters, I loved most of the designs, loved the nods to the OT etc.

I've come to appreciate AotC more than RotS, although the latter is my favorite of all 6. AotC has this weird structure for a sumemr blockbuster movie, it's mostly 2 movies: a detective story and a romance. I love it for that and I love Obi Wan in it. Especially the tension with Anakin in the beginning.

And yes, the opening shot of RotS was a masterpiece.

It's because Dooku was character development for Anakin, the entire RotS was his steps of replacing Dooku as the Emperor's aprentice.

I loved Dooku, I wasn't too happy he was killed off so early and easily.

I would have liked to have seen more of Dooku in the PT, but the way he ended up does make him a bit mysterious to me, an enigma, and i kinda like that. Same as Yoda's background: some stuff i just prefer to be left in the dark.

I think AOTC has some awesome elements in it: asteroid chase, Obi-Wan's detective ways, the awesomeness of Jango, a bunch of jedi fighting together (something i always wondered how it would look like), Yoda dueling... i tend to name it as my least favorite SW movie, but it's still one i enjoy tremendously.

Love those, 747 :woot:

No it wasn't, it's just a common comparison people make because Sith was by most peoples accounts the best of the prequels and Jedi was the worst of the originals. The emotion between Vader, the Emperor, and Luke at the end was amazing. Lucas had serious issues with his father and he expressed them through Star Wars (Indiana Jones to a lesser degree as well). The whole battle was Luke angry with his Father for all the wrongs he's done for trying to drag him down, all the while he is subconsciously becoming his father himself. Meanwhile the Emperor (who by all means represents Satan) is showing him how much he can gain by becoming his father. Luke at the end has to make the tough choice to go down being the better man than Vader could, even if it means death.

Lucas seemed to write the prequels with the pain of his loss of Maria, his wife, but he seemed to be in a state of denial. The prequels put a great deal of emphasis on the rules against Jedi marriage and how sometimes making the tough choices becoming the bad guy can make you lose everything. However this isn't necessarily true, sure his work had to do with it but he lost her because of himself, and he should have written Anakin that way. It's not secret writer some times draw from experience and its not hard to make the connection between Luke and Lucas, especially when you hear about what he has to say about his father. He should have looked harder in the mirror when he was trying to step into his father shoes.

Dooku's my favorite Sith. I wouldn't have minded him replacing Grievous in RotS.

I'm weak for Grevious, I think he is cool.

This reminds me of this thread back at the forums in theforce.net when ROTS was released where people argued back and forth wether Mace really defeated Palpatine, or was Palps faking it. What's ur take on that? I thought Mace disarmed him fair and square, but then Palpatine stayed down when he sensed Anakin was arriving (pure speculation on my part, but what the heck lol), so he could play the helpless act, which he clearly wasnt. He had sith lightning for god's sake, that alone ruled him out as defenseless.

I loved Mace Windu's demise. It was great.

I think Mace actually had the upper hand on Sidious at some point, but then Sid started faking.
