If Romney wants to be closely associated to Trump, I say, "Go for it!" Mitt's lucky this broke on a Friday, but hopefully the Donald will spew more crap next week. Just remind independents what is on the mind of a lot of the Republican base and create a wedge issue solely to hurt themselves. Mitt's people are probably telling Trump to shut up and hope this dies down by Monday, but one can hope.

Still, to think Trump is trying to use this to not help Romney, but garner attention for himself and try to compare himself to George Clooney is hilarious.

Well Trump is at it again on CNN and Romney went to the Trump fundraiser tonight without denouncing the birther ****. Instead, he gave a wishy-washy, "Well, he believes one thing, I believe another" BS answer that has become his signature.

I hope this backfires on him spectacularly and the Dems paint him as endorsing birtherism. Maybe someone can get a recording of that dinner with Trump saying something stupid. Shouldn't be hard, just press record at any point tonight and it will work.

I don't think they are trying to paint Romney as a birther, it's more a case trying to paint the Republican party as alot of far right radicals and that's what Romney has to deal with to try make happy.

And the longer he is defined as that to the middle the more unappealing he becomes. Hence, why he should have stayed away from Trump or strongly denounced this. Instead, he is being the "plastic insincerity" you describe. That is unappealing to those who vote on personality which is a lot of the middle.

My point is, Romney has nowhere to go but up in terms of perception of resolve and integrity. He has absolutely none. So how the hell does Trump do any damage at all? It's already a smoldering crater of epic fail. You can't destroy something that is completely vaporized (in this case Romney's integrity). It's classic Romney.

But I don't want it to go up. I want it to stay at zero. The longer it's at zero, the harder it is to climb up. And if he is going to win in states like Pennsylvania, Ohio and Virginia he needs to climb. All of his own self-inflicted setbacks I welcome.
