The Punisher The Punisher - General Discussion Thread

Sure but John Wick isn't viewed as a problematic figure right now.

I wish they just made a movie. I mean, we are in the age of John Wick making buckets of money.

John Wick has Keanu Reeves as its leading man. I love Jon Bernthal, but honestly, is he a big enough of a leading man to put butts in seats? Plus, I feel the episodic format suits Punisher and the rest of those street-level characters well.

Or if it was a short film in the vein of Punisher: Dirty Laundry.

You make $20-30M R-rated Marvel Studios action movie starring Jon Bernthal which looks actually good, and I'm pretty sure that it would be profitable.

Kevin Feige's biggest limit so far has been imagining every Marvel movie as a big blockbuster. Under his watch, a $58M R-rated Deadpool movie would have NEVER been greenlit.

And before anyone mentions Deadpool & Wolverine - they road Fox's coattails on a crossover between two already hugely successful, proven R-rated commodities.

Bernthal is cowriting the standalone special now in the works alongside Reinaldo Marcus Green, who will also direct. The Disney+ show will air in 2026 alongside the second season for Daredevil. Daredevil: Born Again season one, which will see Bernthal appearing as Punisher, releases on Disney+ March 4.

I wonder if this special would still be happening if Kamala Harris was president, and corporations like Disney weren't overtly trying to court conservatives. I'm also not sure how I feel about characters like Daredevil and Punisher being relegated to only TV appearances.

That said, as a fan of the Netflix series and Bernthal in general, I'm still excited for this (something I can't say for any other Marvel property not called Daredevil).

I guess if you view The Punisher as a pro-Trump ultra-conservative, right-wing character...
I don't think he's inherently right wing, but you can't deny that there's an attempt by that crowd to co-opt him, and this could be viewed as attempting to placate people like that. Lazy viewers can infer whatever meaning they want. I'm just saying the optics seem to imply that this is crass political pandering by Disney to the anti woke/DEI crowd.

Except there were *rumors* about Punisher taking on some corrupt cops co-opting the skull in Daredevil, so Punisher may not be such a right-wing darling after DD comes out
Plus Marvel comics trying to distance the character from the original skull logo

The right wingers will keep using the original skull logo though cuz they think it makes them look, like, a total badass bro

The Punisher is the antithesis of everything conservatives stand for. Trump, Musk, MAGA, Rittenhouse, Gaetz, etc., would all get a bullet to the back of the head if Frank was actually real.

The problem is those troglodytes have ZERO media literacy and can't critically analyze anything that isn't written in crayon.

I live in a constant state of rage because I have a Punisher half sleeve tattoo because I loved how the character was a condemnation and criticism of our broken justice system, and the wish fulfillment of killing the truly vile, and now I have to deal with having to explain my tattoo to people, and fight with dip****s who think I agree with their pro cop bull****.

I mean there was an attempt by Nazis to co-opt William Shakespeare as German during the time of Nazi Germany. That's why there's an exchange in Star Trek VI where the Klingons say, "Have you ever heard Shakespeare in Original Klingon?" It's in reference to that.

I guess the one thing we can hope for is if the special is well received, it can potentially lead to more down the line.

Hope the special is closer to 90 mins
Nah, that would just piss me off. You might as well put in the effort to make a thetrical movie then.

He has never been. Marvel shouldn't let a group of people dictate what they think he is.

And the original logo shouldn't disappear from the Punisher's stories.

Have him take down a bunch of racists, homo- and transphobes using the very logo that they have co-opted!

90 mins would make it essentially a TV movie. I am perfectly fine with that. If it was theatrical, you know they'd have to litter it with crap to make it 200 mil or something.

There's no way Disney makes a Punisher movie right now.
Like in the 2010s, I just don't think both Marvel Studios and Disney in giving theaterical feature films for Daredevil and The Punisher, especially Kevin Feige. So we could also cross out a possibility for a movie for Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Cloak & Dagger and Inhumans - any Ips that had a TV series under the old Marvel Television.

I will always prefer a theaterical film over a tv series, not only because of the production values, but also a theaterical film feels more like an event, compare to another streaming series or in this case, a "Special Presentation". The term Special Presentation is weird because its not really a special, but more like a straight to streaming movie that is less than 90 minutes.

Which harkens back to what I said about Kevin Feige's biggest limit with Marvel Studios.

The truth is - they DON'T HAVE to litter it with crap to make it $200M. They WOULD WANT to litter it with crap.

Deadpool was made on a $58M budget and ran for 108 minutes including credits.

This "every movie needs to be massive budgeted blockbuster-type" mindset is so close minded.

The Marvel comic book universe is much more vast than that.

I am not saying they have to be. I am saying the studio would just end up doing it. I see nothing wrong with essentially a 2 part special for Punisher on D+. Would be something on D+ people would actually watch

I'm just saying the studio is wasting the massive potential of the very vast Marvel library.

The Punisher could be a theatrical hit, if done well.

Or at least make it like Extraction for Netflix.

Eh...urhm....I'm down for this Marvel Special Presentation of The Punisher - bring it on!

This is why Marvel Studios needs a theatrical Marvel Knights imprint to serve this kind of purpose. Films made at under $100 million that are still Marvel Studios features but they aren't forced to adhere to the typical MCU format.
