The Punisher Pushed Back - December 5th

Especially to that sure-to-be piece of crap DeNiro/Pacino vehicle.

If star power is all that would prevent this film from being a success, then there's more to worry about than the release date. After the first film, this should be good enough to outdo a vehicle for aging actors. Looking for no competition is not the filmmaker's way of telling me that they have the utmost confidence in this movie's ability to erase our memory of Hensleigh's film.

I'm sure it's a lot more complicated than just "is it good or not".

They need to make money too, you know.

It's too bad we have to wait longer but that will be a nice B-Day for me mine is on the 9th of DEC.

Maybe this means the new movie will have a Christmas theme. Christmas of punishment.

Though it is disapointing to have to wait longer, that move is in the film's best interest I think.

There is no reason to worry about this, Marvel and LGF are doing the only sensible thing.

Three big movies claimed 09.12.08:
"Righteous kill" with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino
"Burn after reading" with George Clooney and Brad Pitt
"Punisher War Zone".

The above also represents the order of the boxoffice winners that weekend. With that competetion, the Punisher might open in the third spot abd be lucky if it makes as much as 10 mill over the weekend - which would kill off the franchise.

In 2004, The Punisher opened in direct competition with Kill Bill 2, which slaughtered it. Had LGF moved the releasedate to a more suitable spot, it might have enjoyed a 25 - 30 mill opening weekend. As it was, it did half that.

This time, the studio has learned, and moved the opening date to stear clear of the worst competition. This also has the added benefit of giving almost three more months to tweak the movie.

Sure, the additional wait sucks, but it'll be worth it, as well be treated to a better movie when it does open, and sequels suddenly look a whole lot more likely.

Agreed on all points.

i find it funny... that theshape and dacrissaman02 are the only two people on here with a negative outlook on punisher: warzone... and they both have batman icons... just a general observation.

:unishr:

I'll wait to see the teaser before judging the date move...

We better not be made to wait for a total piece of crap is all I have to say.

Now, you shouldn't point that out like he thought I did on the Hulk boards a couple weeks ago. He's judging these films on their own merits. Really he is.

I'm happy they are giving the film a later release date so it isn't wounded by typical post-summer superhero flick fatigue. I would like to see this film get every chance it can to be a real success.

I think this pushed back to december is a releasing moved to give more chance at pwz to win at box office. Pwz has a great chance to dominate the box office (also for one week...) but the people think he's a bad movie 'cause 2004 version. This is different and we'll waiting the trailer before judge! Punisher 4 life hihihi!

I'm gonna be pissed if this goes straight-to-DVD.

Highly doubtful, though I doubt they'll restart this property again if this next attempt fails.

Why couldn't they get Pacino or DeNiro involved in a Punisher film?

it's different with the hulk... batman and punisher are seen by some as each other's marvel/dc equivalent. this pisses batman fans off because he's not a killer, and it pisses punisher fans off because he's not a pansy who trusts the law. anyway, like i said it was just a general observation.

because then it would become about them and not the punisher and it becomes cheesy like with travolta (even tho they're both a ton better then travolta, i'm just saying it would be too gimmick-y). beside, they cost too much.

Highly doubtful, though I doubt they'll restart this property again if this next attempt fails.

i definitely don't think we'll get another reboot if this movie fails, maybe in 5-10 years when marvel gets the rights back. however, i think that thanks to lexi alexander and ray stevenson we might finally get a good faithful punisher adaptation that's worthy of a trilogy.
