The Purge 3

Election Year feels like it's going to be more or less a survival horror thing where they have to escort the mayor to a certain safe point and wait out the night.

Perhaps. I will just have to watch the movie to see how things play out.
The trailer looks intriguing no doubt.

If the 3rd one turns out to feel more like a survival horror with a good story to it, I'll probably like the movie. One survivor horror film I want to see next is Cloverfield Lane. That looks like a pretty interesting type movie. If they made more survivor/horror TV shows that were good I'd be down to see even more of this genre.

I see it's being distributed via disc on the 14th. I now have good reason to go to one of the few remaining video rental places near me.:woot:

‘Purge: Election Year’ Slaying ‘Tarzan’, ‘BFG’ With $31M+
Weekend projections from matinees are in and as we expected, out of the new crop Universal/Blumhouse/Platinum Dunes’ Purge: Election Year is killing it with a No. 2 estimated weekend take of $27.5M over three days and $31.5M over four days at 2,796 runs. Today alone, Purge: Election Year will gross $12M inclusive of its $3.64M Thursday night money. In a summer where few franchises have taken off, the horror genre is owning the season with Warner Bros./New Line’s The Conjuring 2 headed to $100M this weekend and Sony’s shark thriller The Shallows finding an audience in a crowded market with a week’s take of $26.3M.

Saw it light night, it's not as strong as Purge 2. They made this one a bit more comedic and fun which isnt necessary bad, but you can feel they dumbed it down for the general audience. I give it a 6/10.

This one was more of a satire. You could tell what they were poking fun at.

But that's not necessarily a bad thing. For example, Scream. When it comes to these Purge films I honestly don't think I mind that if that's what this film is sort of doing in a way. Not saying it's trying to do what Scream did. Just saying if it has a bit of satire and is a bit aware, I don't mind.

Yeah but this one wasn't subtle about it at all. I mean 2 had those moments too, but it's nowhere as blatant as 3.

Ehh I mean I haven't see this film yet. But not sure how much it would bother me. I don't expect too much from these Purge films. 2 has been the best so far. Does it have some cool kills or moments of action?

I mean it's obvious the concept of the Purge is one big metaphor, lol.

I would argue that the "metaphor" is that this is something that totally needs to happen in real life.

Hated the first one (Ironically, I thought Ethan Hawke was great in it). Loved the sequel. And I think this one is the best one of the series although the wife thinks Anarchy is the peak of the trilogy.

PROS said:
- Leo Barnes is basically channeling Leon Kennedy from Resident Evil 4 in this having to protect Senator Hillary Clinton from The Republican Party. He also carries this pretty cool arrow knife.

- The writers expand on the lore in the natural ante up of storytelling. I always enjoy getting more background on things.

- Leo's group is stronger and more likeable than the previous film.

-
I thought the movie was going to go back to its roots with the first one having it limited to the house, but it leads to being out in the open in like the last film.

- I laughed at
the Miley Cyrus song being played. I got the joke that they did that on purpose because she is crazy to match the mindset of the candy thief.

- The use of the Christmas lights was interesting.

-
The Ballerina gang
getting offed by the store is the most satisfying kill of the franchise.

-
The Stranger returns and finally has a name!!!

I loved the climatic
knife
fight! Fu**ing brutal!

CONS said:
- Unless I missed it, they didn't explain how the
Senator
survived in the opening sequence. I was expecting another scene that never came.

- Its not as violent as Anarchy, but personally, I didn't mind. The comedy bits made up for it.

- The hanging tree creeped me out.

- They don't explain what happened to
Carmelo. I'm assuming he was killed, but they could've at least said something about it. No mention of The Sandins either.

- Mykelti Williamson was Discount Mike Epps. They should've just gotten him for the role.

- The priest looked like a child molester. I'm sure that was intentional as well.

- I was expecting
Leo
to die at the end, but I wasn't surprised it was
Joe, who lost the will to live after getting screwed by the insurance company. The store was everything to him.
.

Bittersweet ending as there seems that there will be no more Purges. Might as well quit while you're ahead I guess.
They kill off The Stranger, who was the glue of these movies, (total gut punch for me) and they didn't play the siren at the end. I was pissed at the latter as I felt it robbed me of my Purge fan viewing experience.

i'm glad Frank Grillo came back. This sequel wouldn't have been great without him. Those are my thoughts on the epic conclusion to The Purges.

I had the complete opposite reaction, first one was great, second was ok, and I really doubt the third film!!! :yay:
:djs:

I have always thought that they should adopt the video game Manhunt and turn it into a Purge movie. It would be a match made in heaven.

I would argue that the "metaphor" is that this is something that totally needs to happen in real life.

'Paid for by the political committee of Donald Trump.'

Make America great again! Purge!

Seeing this tonight - can't wait.

While a bit too much of a twist with the neighbors near the end, I actually liked the first Purge movie the best. Something about making bunkers, forts, or armoring the the houses up trying to keep crazy people out that just seemed more involving for me. It felt like the characters were more vulnerable and the sudden twist of the boyfriend trying to off the father was definitely shocking and the neighbors trying to be overly nice to once another for fear of rubbing someone the wrong way just slightly was intriguing. There was a true social underpinning behind everything amplified by a truly outrageous concept.

With that being said, I think the 2nd movie was ok. Frank Grillo was awesome in it and would've made a great Frank Castle. However, for the Purge franchise, I think the main thing the movie franchise needs to avoid is an unstoppable action hero as then the idea of a Purge becomes more of a backdrop to an action movie. The trailer for the 3rd makes me think this will probably be the case but the movie will still probably be worth checking out though.

The Purge should be more of an action movie. The idea is legalized mayhem which lends more to an action movie than a horror movie. If the Purge only leads to serial killers sneaking and lurking in people's houses, then that's boring.

And the daughter's boyfriend in the first film was the dumbest aspect of that film. Like killing the father is going to win his daughter over?

I would say 7/10. Leagues better than the first. Not as great as the second. I enjoyed the second because it was basically a Punisher movie. In my mind Grillo still should have been the Punisher. So seeing his character become almost domesticated in this film was a disappointment. Hopefully they go back to Punisher mode with the fourth
which I'm very excited to see what they do with it. The set up is there and I think it will be as great as the second because they're going to need to reinvent their approach like they did with the second. I'm picturing a LA Riots sort of horror movie and that sounds really cool to me. You're no longer safe on other nights but one. Hell it can be during the day too. Just a lot they can do with it.
1st - 6/10, 2nd- 8/10, 3rd-7/10.

I know the movie was based on the race, but man, that is creepy!
