The movie looks like ridiculous fun. I wanna see this!
The Raid is a bone-breaking, gut-punching, action movie triumph. The combination of a great premise, brilliantly-inventive direction, incredible fight sequences and spirited performances makes it easy for us to already proclaim that The Raid is the action movie of the year.
We're pretty confident that the upcoming PG-13 Expendables sequel is going to look like a romantic comedy by comparison.

Hitting U.S. theaters on March 23rd, Gareth Evan's martial arts action thriller, The Raid has received both a domestic trailer (courtesy of Yahoo! Movies) and a brand-new subtitle. The film will now be known as The Raid: Redemption.
The film stars Indonesian martial arts sensation Iko Uwais and takes place deep in the heart of Jakarta's slums at an impenetrable safe house for the world's most dangerous killers and gangsters. Until now, the run-down apartment block has been considered untouchable to even the bravest of police. Cloaked under the cover of pre-dawn darkness and silence, an elite swat team is tasked with raiding the safe house in order to take down the notorious drug lord that runs it. But when a chance encounter with a spotter blows their cover and news of their assault reaches the drug lord, the building's lights are cut and all the exits blocked. Stranded on the sixth floor with no way out, the unit must fight their way through the city's worst to survive their mission.
The new title is likely an early move to distinguish the film from its recently announced sequel, tentatively titled Berandal overseas.

UK release is when???
Truthfully, none of us, the guys at SPC included, wanted to change the title from the original. But once we knew we were going to expand the film into a sequel - possibly a trilogy it opened our eyes up to maybe the need for an all encompassing title that could work for all three films.
At first it was just something we toyed around with as an idea to start using with part 2, but then it became an essential thing to do from the get go. The reason why: we found out "The Raid" itself was not available for us to use as a title in the US.
We couldn't get clearance on it and believe me we all tried but with that task becoming impossible and a release date looming - we chose to go with our idea to add a word that reflected one of the elements from the first film. Redemption was the one that fit, and it beat losing The Raid completely after all the work we'd done to establish awareness of the film.
This wasn't an "evil studio" thing, the decision had nothing at all to do with the proposed remake. This was a situation we were all forced into. You guys may not love the new addition to the title, and I'm not about to go and say Redemption is perfect, cos it's not - we all much prefer the simplicity of The Raid.
But the film, it is still the same film we screened at festivals and all I hope is that you all read whatever part of that 5 second titlecard you want to when it pops up on screen, forget the rest and enjoy seeing my good friends beat the **** out of each other for 100mins.

Though weve known for quite a while, director Gareth Evans is now officially set to direct Berendal (tentative title), the sequel to his much buzzed about action pic The Raid. I havent stopped hearing great things about The Raid since it screened at TIFF, and our own Matt Goldberg recommends it without hesitation. The martial arts-heavy film centers on 20 elite SWAT team members must make their way up the treacherous floors of a criminal-infested highrise in order to get to the gangs leader. Its a simple premise, but after watching the trailer you begin to see how Evans has crafted a pretty insane actioner.
The film opens in the U.S. on March 23rd under the title The Raid: Redemption, but Evans previously told Steve that The Raid is the first in a planned trilogy. He talked extensively about the follow-up and said he hopes to bring car chase elements to the sequel, Berendal. THR confirms that both Evans and star Iwo Uwais are officially set to return for the next installment, and Evans told Steve that the budget for Berendal will be significantly larger than the first film, with an eye towards close to $3 million. Production on the sequel will apparently last around 100 days.
Couldn't be further from the truth.
I see a lot of run and gun...but doesn't seem to carry any emotion to me.
