This is a casting thread for a villain many of us have been itching to get a proper live-action portrayal.

My pick right now is:

Martin Freeman (Fargo, The Hobbit Trilogy)

Edward Norton, still my number 1 choice for Edward Nygma.

Robert Knepper. If you've seen Prison Break than you know why. He fits the role pretty well in my opinion, he can play a smart character that is also vicious. Did this photoshop of him as Riddler awhile back, it's not very good but I was thinking about who to cast in a reboot and I threw together some pictures to see what some of my choices looked like.

I like the idea of The Riddler as more of a weasily informant than as a true threat for Batman. Kind of the loser of Batman's rogue gallery. Definitely along the lines of the Jeph Leob / Tim Sale version. Jason Schwartzman is my choice for that version of the character.

Steve Carell.

He's sophisticated, weaselly, and zany. Perfect for the Riddler.

Either him, or Neil Patrick Harris :D

I would be laughing too much with Carell. NPH is not a good dramatic actor.

I want a Riddler who i can take seriously. Be slightly creeped out by, and a little annoyed by him too. Somebody i want to strangle but who gives me the creeps because he's like an obessive, weak little stalker who is super smart yet is so full of himself. I've had enough laughs with Gorshin and Carrey, it's time for a straight up weirdo. But visually not as colorful.

For me, he needs to be older too. Carrey was in his 20s. This new Gotham version looks like an early 20s version. I want this Riddler to be in his 40s. Michael Emerson would have been great around the time he started Lost. But that ship has sailed.

Im not sure who i would cast right now, but i guess i wouldnt mind if Riddler wasn't in the newer movies at all. I'd actually rather see an older Joker. Im still not a Riddler fan to be honest. Never have been.

Actually Carrey was in his 30s when he played the Riddler but I agree Riddler should be in his late 30s early 40s.

You won't be laughing at Carell in Foxcatcher, Shauner ;)

Yeah I like that take on the Riddler too. Riddler's portrayal in Hush, TLH and Dark Victory combined with the way he's portrayed in the Arkham games would be ideal.

I'd rather not see the Riddler at all if they are just going to make him a non-threatening wimp for Batman to pummel and provide stupid comedic relief. Those type of villains ruin movies for me. I want to see him be more vicious and the mastermind of a plot against Batman/Gotham with a gang of his own and another villain helping to provide some muscle. We've already seen him be the loser villain that can't really accomplish anything a few times, it makes his character pointless IMO.

I still would love to see Joker, Penguin, Riddler and Two-Face all team up to try to take down Batman one of these days, kind of the Batman rouge gallery version of the Sinister Six.

They probably wont use him for comic relief or have him interacting with batman physically. More of a behind the scenes character who is toying with Bruce's mind.

Id rather see Penguin, Joker, Hugo Strange, Freeze, Black Mask than Riddler.

Have you not seen the trailer yet?
ill look into it now!

Edit: OK i just saw it. I think this has a lot to do with the makeup/physical transformation. I know he's a good actor, but if he's looking like he normally does, which he will for Riddler, i wont be able to take him seriously. Something about his face and voice that just kills me haha.

BUT I WANT HIM FOR RIDLA :waa: :waa: :waa:

I dont think the casting would go over well. It would make people think of Jim Carrey's casting. Even if Carrell nails it, in a serious way, which both Robin Williams AND Jim Carrey were capable of..it's going to be the most annoying fan outcry ever.

I still think his face will crack me up so ill stick with no haha. Poor Rodrigo! I think Riddler should only have a couple of quick scenes in the solo movie anyway. Same with Two-Face (Jon Hamm please!) and a few others. These rogues should have fought their battles time and time again with the Batfleck. They know each other well.

Well, I have no idea who to cast as Riddler! I really don't :hehe:

If everybody falls in love with Carell after Foxcatcher, it would make things more comfortable amongst the fan community, I reckon :hmm

Macaulay Culkin
Jason Schwartzman
David Tenant
Paul Dano

I don't really want him to get into a physical confrontation with Batman, I'd just like to see him being more of a vicious character in general, for example some of his plots would have victims or destroy property in Gotham, maybe he has a couple henchmen of his own that he uses to inflict pain on his victims and/or Batman. More of a mastermind of plots, but make him a more violent character. I just don't want to see another version of him being a hokey weakling that poses no threat to anyone, cracking stupid jokes and leaving riddle boxes around to antagonize Batman. That's a pointless character to me, it serves no purpose.

I also would prefer to see Joker, Penguin, and Black Mask, Freeze is a character I wouldn't mind again as well. I wouldn't mind seeing Bane, Scarecrow or Two-Face again either despite them recently being used. But Riddler is a character I'd like to see as well, I haven't seen the character done the way I would like to see it yet and he's one of the most famous/classic villains of Batman. Don't have any interest in Hugo Strange or Mad Hatter though. Never had much interest in either of those characters, I have literally no interest at in the Mad Hatter. Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, Victor Zsasz, Clayface, Hush and Deadshot are other villains I wouldn't mind seeing, even if it's just a quick cameo or small role.

David Tennant would be solid, I'll pass on the rest. Especially Dano, he should stay far away from this genre of movies (or any movie period for that matter).

Bradley Cooper would also be great. He's a dead ringer for the Riddler of nowadays and has the skills to pull off both the serious and manic sides

Sure, he's with Marvel...but it's only to voice a CGI Raccoon :)

I want Bradley Cooper as Green Lantern!
imo, Riddler should be a lot scrawnier than Bradley Cooper, less conventionally good looking too.
there's a lot they can do with the Riddler. He could carry his own movie, i dunno if that's the first Batman film i want to see post Nolan though. Riddler vs Batman would've been great in Nolan's universe, i think it's time to try more outlandish Batman villains again.

And I want Steve Carell as Riddler, but it won't happen because Shauner thinks he's too funny looking! :o
