Captain Marvel The Rotten Tomatoes/Critic's Reaction Thread

I am hoping it is better than Thor: TDK or IM2, but I quite liked Aquaman. So I would be happy with that.

Aquaman was pretty much a videogame, screw that movie.

But what they seem to be saying here in regards to the MCU comparisons there is...it's a movie that's more fun to watch than those two, it's not a slog to get through like The Dark World is, but it has less of a handle on the character of Carol herself than that flick does on Thor. Like clarity wise, an arc, a throughline.

That's surprising as hell. Guess it might have just been me internally overhyping it, but from everything we've seen so far (along wth who's directing it), I could have sworn this thing'd be upper-tier MCU somewhere, top 5 or 6 of everything released to this point. If Carol's kind of wishy-washy and vague as an actual character, that's going to work against it majorly though, no way around it. Gotta get the basics nailed down first, before the rest.

That other negative review from the other guy crapping on it though, Indiewire, he says he thinks The Incredible Hulk majorly sucks, so wouldn't take that one too seriously. The Incredible Hulk has faults, but there's plenty of good character suff and a clear narrative throughline there.

Campea gave it a positive too. He says it's good but not great.... I can live with that.

The indiewire review is by far the worst I've read

‘Captain Marvel’ Review: A Massively Disappointing Introduction to Carol Danvers

‘Captain Marvel’ Review: A Massively Disappointing Introduction to Carol Danvers

This isn’t the first time a Marvel protagonist has spent an entire movie trying to figure out the basic details of who they are, but at least Star Lord was given some additive character business to fill in the gaps. Ms. Danvers has no such luck, and Larson — an Oscar-winner whose natural protectiveness is poorly served by such a self-satisfied character — has little to do beyond mug for the camera and spout third-rate one-liners to any of the men who get in her way. Larson is far too eager to play her own action figure, and that proud approach doesn’t leave Carol anywhere to go once her memories inevitably return. So she settles for quips and second-hand glimpses into whatever life she used to live. There’s an emotional core in there somewhere, but the movie doesn’t find it. Not since Edward Norton’s Hulk has the MCU offered such a two-dimensional title hero (compared to Danvers, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk might as well be a Dostoyevsky character).
Sounds like he has a chip on his shoulder about Brie to me

Jeremy Jahns gave this an average rating. He did praise Ben Mendelsohn though.

after first 100 there is a good sense where it will land. Rarely it goes beyond +/-10 and often won’t move +/-5 I think. It tends to trend downward since it is quite difficult to gain a lot more without a negative and is much easier to gain a few negatives in a row to drop the score.

I have a sense it is going to stay close to where it's at now. But we will see!

From what i am seeing the RT score and Average Rating will go up.

8 more fresh reviews that haven't been added. According to my math the RT not updated score is at 89%.

Is this what we're going to do any time someone doesn't like Larson's performance?

No.
Other critics have commented on her performance without anyone here saying that
So, maybe that particular reviewer just came off like a bit of an a**hole...?

Convenient to call a reviewer an a-hole because he's more direct in his criticisms.

I never expected this to get high 90s. Maybe 90%-92% at best. I am intrigued by how mixed the reviews are, especially around the performances.

I respect Marvel for trying to change up the usual origin story and giving us a Carol that already has her powers early on. But sounds like there are still some pacing issues.

Generally even the positive reviews seem very meh.

It's not shocking at least not to me. The marketing has been bland as all hell. It's the first time in a looooooong time where I've been looking past an upcoming Marvel film. I haven't even decided when I'm seeing it yet. I've only missed opening weekend for an MCU film like twice.

We'll see though. Obviously won't know until I do see it.

This new system RT has in place is so much worse than the one they had previously.

Which change are you referring to? I def think their server is lacking on the update department right now.
