The RPG Concept Thread

Okay, I have a proposition for those who would be interested. Fantasy is the one genre that RPGs should always have a foothold in, given fantasy is what started the whole RPG movement. However, we were unable to keep Gods & Men running. Some of that fault lies with all of us, except for Johnny. I had trouble posting some times, as did everyone else in that game. Part of the problem in my part was that with Fantasy RPGs I'm more used to the traditional DM guided storyline. For that I have a solution.

I am willing to DM a structured Dungeons & Dragons Campaign for anyone who is interested. Most likely we would be running under 3.5 Edition rules, as two of the people I'm hoping will go in for this have yet to try 4th Edition.

The biggest problems we had with G&M were that we had very few people who posted. That will be reversed with this RPG. There will be a limit to the number of players that can be in a campaign at once. Would anyone be interested in this?

I know you really want me to be interested in it, but I dislike the constraints on the classes and magic abilities :(

I know we have like 1U and both regular and Ult RPGS, but how about a 1U What If? I just love the idea of a universe where not only allegiances change, but also where origins change all within one huge amalgam universe.

I'm obviously too much of a n00b to step forth and apply an RPG or whatever, but if one came about I'd be all over it like a monkey on a cupcake (a reference Keyser will enjoy, I'm sure :D)

*Goes away to plot characters*

I'm not sure if I understand completely. One Universe meshes the origins of everyone together as well. The two universes didn't just "meet" one day and stay like that. The universe was born with DC and Marvel side by side.

Did I say anything beneficial or did I miss your idea/concept all together?

Yeah, the Concept of the 1U, but with different origins... like in 1U the characters are pretty much canon aren't they?

But I was thinking of like... Bruce Wayne loses his parents and chooses to punish Gotham instead of become a vigilante...

Or Superman was a mutant or genetically engineered super soldier rather than a benevolent alien?

Perhaps Hulk was an alien entity that infected Banner and uses the Banner persona as a guise?

See what I mean? a What If? style combined into one universe (as opposed to a Marvel AND a DC version)

Hmm...it's interesting. We tried a "What If?" RPG with Marvel and it died, though.

oh. :(

Reboot! I'll keep it alive... on my own if I must!

That's not much of an RPG anymore, then. That's a fanfic. :cwink:

Hahaha, Fair play.

You don't think someting like that would survive if it got a reboot/overhaul then?

Not really. I mean, if you get enough support and all here to try it, I say go for it. But, if it doesn't get much attention, I'd let the idea go.

I think a What If? would be fun...but too flawed to last as an RPG. What If? and Elseworlds are designed to be one-shot deals for a reason. There's the problem of people stepping on each other's toes, keeping track of all the changes, whether continuity changes from Season to Season...

It just...wouldn't work, I'm afraid.

It's cool. You guys are seasoned enough to know what works and what doesn't, so I trust your judgement.

If we did a "What If" game, I think it might work better as a game where the seasons were self-enclosed.

A What If? game where each season, or even each half of a season, would be a self-enclosed What If story? And the GMs could have an outline for each particular story, so that it would have a definitive beginning and end?

This...intrigues me.

The Harlekin has spoken, may that be the end of it! :meanie:

Would anyone be interested in this?:

Basically, I want to make an RPG for comic book characters not playable in the DC and Marvel RPG's. It's been tried before, and the potential is obviously there, but the concepts themselves for the RPG's layout have never quite worked. So, here's what I'm proposing: A merged, one universe of sorts, where every non DC/Marvel comic character exists within the same universe.

Take, for instance, the BPRD. They could be investigating the ruthless otherworldly vigilante known as Spawn, who has a mysterious connection to the occult. With this in mind, John Constantine is brought onto their team. (Even though Constantine is availible for play in the DC RPG's, he's technically a Vertigo character)

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, a vigilante called V is fighting the corruption of London. British intelligence recruits the aide of the superheroes of Astro City, or perhaps even The Danger Girls to try and capture him. But their mission is sabatoged when V champions none other than The Authority for his cause.

Stuff like that. One shot story characters could be reinvented to fit the world, while other characters wouldn't have to necessarily be touched, depending on their players. But I'm willing to listen to any ideas you guys would have for this, as this obviously could raise the same number of problems than solutions.

I'd be interested. I realize it's a tall order, but I would prefer it if Watchmen characters were off limits. I seriously would not join if they were available to apply for. Then, of course, that brings up the question of what universe are impossible to incorporate.

Because it ruins them. The mere fact of having them be in a continuous story completely misses their point.

Why watch the movie when you can go read the book?
