College Freshmen Are Lonelier and More Innocent Than Ever

Students drink and hang out less than they have in three decades. The only thing they do more of is surf the Web

College campuses may have a reputation for rampant debauchery, but increasingly the students showing up at orientation just look like lonely homebodies. College freshmen report spending less time hanging out with their friends than they have in the past three decades, a new study shows.

Only 18 percent of freshmen surveyed in 2014 said they spent at least 16 hours a week socializing with peers, according to a report released Thursday by researchers at UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute (PDF). That's the lowest level since researchers began polling this group in 1987. At the same time, more freshmen are spending just a handful of hours with friends every week. Almost 39 percent of freshmen said they spent five hours or less a week with buddies—an all-time high. For the annual report, researchers surveyed 153,015 freshmen at 227 four-year U.S. colleges in fall 2014, administering their questions during orientation or at the beginning of classes.
They must be addicted to the hype.

Luckily, I've gotten lucky with my professors and textbooks. None of mine this semester required any textbooks unless I want supplemental information.

These textbook companies are a damn scam. You buy one book only for a newer edition to come out the following year. In a related note, according to my university's official code, all professors are legally required to only use the oldest relevant edition of any given textbook.

Our professors always use the newest books, and only rarely do they accept a version that's even a year older.

Also, one of my professors actually told me that our University has a rule that prohibits professors from telling students to buy their books from anywhere other than the campus store.

See, that s*** right there is what's wrong with our education in this country. College is a business first, educational institution second. They're going to get theirs. Unless you were blessed with a full ride scholarship or parents so rich, they don't bat an eye to money, you have no choice but to play ball.

I can see why. That's why I say a big f*** you to my university and rent online. Some textbook stores off campus (unless your school is in the middle of nowhere) do their damnedest to undercut the university as well. I like those places.

graduated about two months ago. I'm sick to death of being unemployed.

Bite the bullet, take out some more loans, and go to grad school.

maybe someday. i don't rule it out. but i'm already up to my neck in them.

Well, hopefully you find something before those debt collectors call up. Best wishes to you.

Trust me, it's frustrating as hell with graduation coming up. It would be different if degrees guaranteed jobs and stability after school, but the thought of student loans on my back while being unemployed frightens me.

I also rent online 99.9% of the time, with the exception being some textbooks that are impossible to find. It's a no-brainer nowadays, and I find it ridiculous that my campus's bookstore still has the longest lines every semester.

Sites like Chegg have been a game changer for sure.

I have a friend who just made a Facebook post about her $90,000 in student loans from grad school and such.

She's making a whopping $12,000 a year.

Ouch.

I'm half way done with my MBA program. I'm currently in an internship but I have already secured a full time job at a different company after school is over. I honestly can't wait until I go back to school because my current internship is pretty boring.

anyone here studying computer science or software engineering?

Holy f***. She oughta look into joining the military. Dead serious.

It's about that time of year again. Can't believe this thread started with me being a sophomore wanting to know how senior year feels like. Finally, here we are. I have definitely not had a rough time with High School. It's been fun and hasn't been SUPER hard. However, I just want to graduate and get the heck outta there. I'm still looking forward to having a good year and all.

That's just my update. What are you guys up to right now?
