Homecoming The Spider-Man Skepticism Thread

:applaud And the worst part of it is that they've made Spidey into Stark's little pet project who will always need his help. It's annoying and really pisses me off the more I think about it.

So how many of these future movies did you see where Pete always needs Tony's help? Can I see them too or do I need a time machine?

EDIT: just realized this was the skepticism thread, my bad.

I love Miguel too so id be down. I dont want this series to fail though. Itd be cool if miguel got his own movie along with Peter.

That's mostly what I mean. I'd much rather have both get their own respective films.

That was one of the few ideas that Sony had that could've been good, but they were too bogged with many other ideas that they lacked clear focus when TASM2 underperformed.

-Spider-Man 2099
-Raimi trilogy depicting solely the silver age comics.
etc.

I'd love for Doc. Strange to open the door to alternate realities/universes that could be adapted if they ever chose to do so. Think that could appeal to such a wide range of people -- possibly even more the MCU already does.

The only risk of that could be milking the brand of whatever is deemed 'alternate'. :csad:

Which is why I think this wasn't Feige's vision, WebShooter. Look at every interview with Feige and he 100% understands Spider-Man. We didn't see anything he was proposing for the character. Hell, ho back to the leaked emails: his pitch for an MCU Spider-Man was basically Ultimate Comics which would've been amazing. He understands Spidey, some of the people behind Civil War as well as Sony-- do not.

I'm most suspicious and displeased, from the trailer, about the kind of humor the film seems to have. The "This is just a costume!"-"You were on the ceiling!" and They treat me like a kid-"But you are a kid" exchanges make Peter look at best pretty dim and that reaction/interpretation seems the one intended, it seems like a lot of the humor will be at the expense of Peter.

Don't think the "just a kid" scene is intended as humor.

Well, this movie is called "Spider-Man: The Lights Are On But No-One's Home-coming." :o

Found the thread.

Any who, the confirmation bias related to this being an adaptation of the worst animated entry in recent memory just keeps piling on. Chances are that could work out this time, since it's typically advised to borrow and learn from badly executed things that maybe had some ideas worth revisiting
(b-b-but the show was popular and one of the longest lasting )
Atm, I haven't yet gotten that vibe for the former and just comes across as an extension of this is who Spider-Man is now and until the next one rolls around.
The irony of it all (obviously Fury wouldn't be the one to do it) is that some of us likely saw it coming since Spidey was announced to be joining the MCU and I dreaded it with each new promo released.

They're not selling me on this at all.

I'm not a die-hard Spider-Man fan to begin with. I don't read the comics, but I did like the ASM flms. But then they ended that series after two films only to quickly turn around and do another reboot, so my enthusiasm at that point was basically non-existent. I was willing to give them a chance to win me over, but from my perspective they just keep making it worse.

The one thing that I wanted to see to start with was a 616-accurate MJ, but no luck there. They sold me on Angourie Rice as Gwen Stacy...but she's not Gwen Stacy? I don't like the new suit, I wasn't impressed by Spider-Man in Civil War, and I had no desire to see more Tony Stark right now unlike (apparently) the public at large. I might not get into the whole mentored by Tony thing as much as Harry, but I wasn't really too keen on that premise to start with and just wanted to wait and see, and the trailers did nothing to change my mind. For me, at least, what the latest trailer showed is worse than any of the things Harry accused the movie of that people say are unfounded. Like, I'd rather see him hook up with Aunt May than have to listen to him give Peter a lecture on responsibility. I thought Tony was a straight up villain in Civil War, which Marvel seemed to disagree on going by the ending. Now in a movie that directly follows from that, his little buddy learns a very special lesson from "Uncle Tony". F*** him, he should be in prison.

I don't like the trailers in general. Marvel's idea of how to do Spider-Man, or maybe just how to make this reboot interesting in light of the previous versions, is simply not the same as mine, even if it's something that'll make them loads of money from the general audience. I'm not declaring that the movie isn't good, but I don't want to see it. I'm more interested in the Black Cat/Silver Sable movie.

Rather than bog down the GD thread, this thread will probably be my go-to destination.

The high school stuff would be my biggest question mark on this movie at the moment, but we'll see. I'm optimistic

Yeah, it seems like Ned could be pretty annoying and the only thing I'm sorta excited about among the high school cast is Laura as Liz and maybe Rice. I don't think Angourie Rice has that big of a role though.

Ganke does seem a bit annoying. I'm not thrilled by the prospect of having him in these movies as Peter's best friend.

And Flash Thompson just makes me shake my head.

Did Peter necessarily need a best friend, anyway? But then again, I ask that question with a lot of the decisions. :funny:

I feel like they did it for the typical diverse friend role. Stark and Rhodes, Cap and Falcon, Strange, Mordo/Wang, etc...

That, and they seemed hellbent on not using Gwen, MJ, or Harry. Obviously MJ is to be determined but yeah.

Not feeling it at all aside from Vulture.

Well, if it's any consolation, at least, imo, your opinions are well thought. I may not agree with some of those opinions, i.e. your comparisons between USM cartoon Spidey and CW Spidey but I certainly wouldn't consider your posts to be 'thread bogging.'

I actually love the idea of him having a friend who he tells his secret to. Ned looks really funny and likable in the trailers, IMO, and I really dig his and Peter's chemistry. It makes this movie feel fresh in comparison to the others.

Welcome to the...skepticism thread...

Well, I appreciate that (a lot, actually) but I also realize some of my opinions expressed are annoying to some posters who frequent these boards and I'd really rather not stir up any stuff like that going forward. I'd much rather people who are genuinely excited for the film share that excitement rather than arguments that go nowhere and a mod has to step in.

I consider my posts to be thread bogging because they mirror other opinions/arguments expressed by those whom aren't too popular around here for one reason or another and, as I said, I really don't want to stir up anymore drama between pro and anti Civil War/Homecoming sentiments so I'm just going to pop up in this thread every now and again.

Besides, I've already made peace with the fact that I just may not like this take on the character after Homecoming and, if so, I just won't be around this particular sub-forum and I'll stick to The Comics section or past films sections.

No biggie either way. :yay:

Hey man, we have a new comic series (Spectacular), that new game, the new animated show, and the movie. Your odds of liking one of them are pretty reasonable:yay:
