Homecoming The Spider-Man Skepticism Thread

Stark better not come to Peter's rescue in the climax.

Don't worry, he won't. Peter will be unconscious for the climax, so Stark will be the one fighting Vulture. No coming to anyone's rescue. :o

Does it really need to be explained why other heroes are not constantly showing up in each other's films to help one another? I don't want to see Spider-Man showing up in Iron Man's movie to help him defeat the Manderin & vice-versa. So many great self-contained MCU films. Homecoming is the way it is because they WANT it to be. There is no necessity for other heroes like Iron Man to show up & deal with Peter's problems. (That's why Sony is jamming RDJ down our throats with the marketing, because they know he sells)

For a self-contained story like Homecoming with a small-scale villain, there's less of a reason for Iron Man to be in this than for him to have been in TWS

True, Iron Man is in this movie because he sells and he has a good dynamic with Peter and gives this movie an original element that wasn't in previous 5 movies. BUT, as a side effect, it makes the movie more believable in terms of internal logic.

But on other hand, by the same logic Tony should make supersuits for Hawkeye, Natasha, Cap, Sam and Wanda. ...You're right, Tony is the problem. His "powers" are too reliably replicable. :P

Both Sony and Marvel are to blame I think. My main problem is with the story and the characterization of Peter and we know Marvel was in charge of the creative decisions.

If they wanted to be so different, they could have simply follow the comics (no need for Ben death scene tho) because the other two sagas weren't that faithful to the source material.

Instead they changed Peter, focusing way too much on him being a kid/incompentent, created an original character Michelle, add Ganke etc.

All they had to do to stand out was to follow the comics. But the MCU makes a lot of changes all the time, look at 'Civil War'.
They didnt create Michelle for the movie. She already existed in the comics.

And how could Marvel do a Civil War exaclty like in the comics if they dont own all their characthers?

I am fairly certain he will keep the stark spidey suit going forward because you don't introduce it, show it off with all its gadgets and then just lose it by the end of the movie.

What it really comes down to is whether they are planning to have stark in the homecoming sequel, and i suspect they might.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see Spidey in Avengers team in future.

I get the sense thats his arc in the movie or maybe several films that he is a kid who dreams of being an avenger but he has to impress stark to get it.

I don't like the high-tech suit. It just feels wrong. I really hope he doesn't get it back in the future movies.

I don't think they're stretching the "Prove myself to Mr. Stark" arc over three films. Nobody would pay to see a rehash of the first movie each time just with a different villain & a slightly older Peter. Marvel isn't that stupid. This storyline is ending in this film. One way or another. Either he gets accepted into the Avengers or he gets an offer & rejects it having learned that he doesn't need the Avengers to be great Spider-Man. The latter would make more thematic sense with the arc that they've set up. At that point, whenever he becomes an Avenger, it'll happen naturally.

I've been reading your posts on these past two pages. I admit that you have some good points. My biggest point of criticism would have to be vlogging, if he really is posting stuff online. As a nerd, Peter should know how easily hackers could track him down. That's just stupid. But if we could assume that somehow Peter has made it secure, I'd be all for it. It could actually be really cool. Imagine an unpopular kid suddenly becoming a big internet phenomenon. I can see why that kid might want to add fuel to that and interact with his fanbase.

And what comes to Peter's skills and wisdom, I fully believe that Feigi wants Peter to evolve from a movie to movie. Should make for an interesting journey. :)

Does any of that seem in character for Peter Parker though? Maybe when he first got his powers before Ben dies and he learns his lesson, but after that why would he? Bigger question...why make Spider-Man a YouTube vlogger at all? Does it really add to his character?

Would certainly keep stark involved in the sequel.

I hope Stark doesn't have a big role in the future movies. Maybe a little cameo. I wish the movies would focus more on Spider-Man's own characters and villians. I think Spidey has the best characters so they should focus on them.

I hope he doesn't appear in the next Spidey movies at all. :woot:

Man, I don't think I've ever had such skewed opinion of a Marvel film as I do with Homecoming.

On one hand, everything done with Peter Parker looks phenomenal. ASM bragged about focusing more on the high school drama, but it never did anything with it. This feels like a classic Lee/Ditko high school drama in a modern context. I'll be surprised if Feige and Co. don't nail that aspect of the mythos. Also the villain looks fantastic.

On the other hand, everything done with Spidey just feels so...un-Spidey. From Tony giving him classic Spidey gadgets like the spider-signal, different webbings and the spider-tracer, him giving out reports of his activities to Mr. Stark, a "training wheels" program in the suit...this feels like the least independent version we've seen. Furthermore it just all feels so business-thought. Like they're being different for the sake of being different. I mean, is this really the direction had they gone in had it not been for the circumstances?

Now granted, the whole film could be about Peter breaking away from Tony. From what I read, even fans of this pitch take this for granted. I mean it's possible, but I'd like to point out two things.

First, there's no evidence yet of them going that direction. The film could end with Peter having no mentor, Tony learning to be less of an intrusive mentor, Tony adopting a more cooperative approach, or even Peter screwing up and accepting he needs a mentor. We have no reason to take the assumption above for granted besides faith in Marvel sticking to established Spider-Man norms.

Second, while technically not an origin story, it ultimately has the same concept as an origin story: Peter doesn't become the Spider-Man we know till the very end. Doesn't make it a bad thing, but it would suggest all the talk of "we're starting with Spidey being Spidey" is partially exaggerated.

I'll obviously give the film a chance, and even if it "my" Spider-Man I'll still judge it on its own merits. But I do think it's a bit dishonest for the "no valid concerns exist" crowd to not acknowledge any validity to the above two points, as some of the hypesters are doing.

Now I know how The Angry Video Game Nerd felt when he was dealing with Ghostbusters 2016.

I'm still waiting for Marvel to debunk the 'Peter is afraid of heights' thing.

Come on, this makes zero sense. Shouldn't his Spider powers prevent him from having a fear like this?

They won't debunk that, but will reveal additional information that he also has arachnophobia, a torn rotator cuff that prevents him from swinging, repetitive strain injury that prevents him from webshooting, and paranoia that cancels out his spider sense because he always thinks someone is behind him out to get him. :o

I feel that Homecoming 2 will be the Spiderman 2 of the MCU and this version of Spidey. It will be back to basics with less pressure and no more forced MCU connections. It will feel more natural.

It will be called Spider-Man: Prom Season.

Here's hoping, although Ant-Man was fine.

At this point, I'm more excited bout the 2019 sequel than the actually movie coming soon. And I doubt they can reach Spiderman 2 level with such a low start.

My biggest hope for the sequel is that they don't bring other Avengers or any kind of characters who isn't super tied to the Spidey mytho. A girl can dream :oldrazz:.
