The Spirit

I'd like to see Nathan Fillion. ^^
What do you think about George Clooney? He sure has that profile!

What about Richard Jenkins as Commissioner Dolan?

Samuel L. Jackson is in talks to star as a mysterious supervillain in The Spirit, the graphic novel adaptation to be directed by Frank Miller for Lionsgate and Odd Lot Entertainment.

The story centers on Denny Colt, an ambitious young cop murdered in the line of duty who under mysterious circumstances is reborn as the masked mystery man known as the Spirit.

Jackson would play the Spirit's nemesis, the Octopus, a meek lab assistant who reinvents himself as a psychotic nightmare that kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face. The Octopus' tentacles reach into every aspect of crime in fictitious Central City, a city he plans to wipe out.

Miller, one of the world's most renowned graphic artists, wrote the screenplay, which is based on the comic book series created by the late Will Eisner. The film will mark the first solo directing project for Miller, who co-helmed 2005's Sin City with Robert Rodriguez.

Batfilm's Michael Uslan is producing alongside Odd Lot's Deborah Del Prete and Gigi Pritzker.

Dude. That would be f**kin' AWESOME. I hope Jackson get's the role.

Oh, before someone else says it:

"That's it! I've had it with this MOTHERF**KING SPIRIT in this MOTHERF**KING CITY! :cmad:"

There was a rumor some weeks ago that he was talking to actors from Sin City for some of the major roles. And I wonder if they will keep Octopus' face hidden as it was in the comics.

Jacksons a comic book fan so I'm not really surprised. He plays a good villian as well, I really liked him as Mr Glass in Unbreakable.

Sweet!

Is there a 'The Spirit' thread?

Miller Conjures Up New SPIRIT
To go along with his three Sin City efforts, graphic novelist Frank Miller will now also get to direct someone else's comic book vision.
The first day of the Cannes Film Festival brings much film news, as the studios and distributors in attendance unveil shiny new marquee projects. In the case of Lionsgate Films, it is the fact that they will get to distribute in the U.S. and UK a film version of The Spirit directed by Frank Miller.

Will Eisner's comic book series is seen as one of the models that inspired many of the superhero franchises that followed. It tells the tale of a masked hero who has faked his own death so that he can fight crime, particularly his vicious enemy The Octopus.

Although Miller has committed to co-directing all three Sin City films with Robert Rodriguez, this will be his first time as a solo filmmaker. It's all attributable to the tremendous success of the film 300, which re-opened doors in Hollywood for Miller and had him making the meeting rounds non-stop in recent months.

I tried finding a pick of the Octopus but cannot find anyone. Does anyone have a scan or anything?

So is the Octopus a Spirit villian in the comics? I am not farmiliar with him.
Mr. Glass was awesome, and I would love to see Jackson play another comic bad guy.

Sam as The Octopus.. sweeet!! Hopefully the talks go well for him to play it.
Now we are seeing some things moving.
Now I wanna hear who is gonna play The Spirit.

I don't think you're going to find any scan of Octopus. If I'm not wrong you could only see his gloved hands in the comics.

Really? Then why the hell cast Sam Jackson. Why not just stick anyone in the role? Does this mean hes a grunt or something, not a main villain?

He's the Spirit's Joker or Luthor. You need someone who can act in the role. Just because you never see his face doesn't mean that the person doesn't need to act.

I like Jackson when he acts serious, and Mr. Glass immediately comes to mind when I think of Jackson acting serious. I think he'll do pretty good in the role.

Miller's Spirit at Lionsgate

May 16, 2007 - The distribution rights to the forthcoming film version of Will Eisner's The Spirit graphic novels, to be written and directed by Frank Miller (300, Sin City), have been picked up by Lionsgate.

"Will Eisner's The Spirit is a product of passion and dedication for me. Will was a dear friend, a mentor, and translating his vision to the screen will be a labor of love. I look forward to working with the people at Lionsgate, and to add to their lauded reputation for genre films," Miller said.

This morning's announcement also included the first official plot synopsis of the film:

Adapated from the legendary Will Eisner's graphic novels, The Spirit tells the visceral, action-packed story of a man who fakes his own death and fights crime from the shadows of Central City. The Octopus -- who kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face -- has a different mission: he's going to wipe out the entire city. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City's rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront ... all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader. In the vein of Batman Begins and Sin City, The Spirit takes us on a sinister, gut-wrenching ride of a hero who is born, murdered and born again.

The deal struck between Lionsgate and Spirit production company Odd Lot Entertainment is actually part of a new over-arching pact between the studios. It is a multi-picture co-financing, co-production and split rights arrangement, with The Spirit being the first film in the pipeline.

He's a criminal mastermind in the vein of Professor Moriarty, a major figure in the Central City underworld, and the leader of "The Octagon," a group that is equal parts crime syndicate and terrorist organization. His short term goals are to consolidate his power base in Central City and other major cities, and gain power and wealth through extorsion, theft, blackmail, and the selling of drugs and arms. His long term goal is to set up a big enough criminal network that would allow him to subvert world governments and become a major political power in his own right. Both goals are aided by him and his men carrying out regular acts of terrorism on major cities to weaken the effectiveness and morale of law enforcement and government, and to garner a reputation as a force to be reakoned with. Basically, he's a supervillain who takes the whole "world domination" thing very, very seriously. Generally, he wears a blue suit, trench coat, and purple gloves. The most we ever see of him is with his face in shadow or otherwise obscured. He also has a pechant for duel weilding .45s.

Good choice.

And Doc Claw never showed his face, and he was Gadget's greatest villain lol

Eh, perhaps since this is a comic film I wouldn't be dissapointed...but Sam Jackson has been dissapointing me in the latest crappy movies and roles he has been in and played.

Sam's presence would lend credibility to the film.. hopefully they can get a major star to be the lead..

Ok what does the spirit have to do with DC comics???
