The Superhero Cinematic Civil War - Part 60

Marvel seems to have recognized at least the D+ issue with the rumors they're focusing their energy mostly on street level heroes for D+ content and Marvel.
Better get their act together fast. Just saw my annual sub went up a ton and I have to decide whether to stay on annual by the end of the month. Very likely I will at least switch to monthly and stay unsubbed for part of the year when nothing new/decent is coming out and when I’m too busy.

I think this year being mainly devoid of any regular superhero movies outside of Deadpool will do everyone some good. And no, I don’t count whatever Sony’s doing as “regular superhero movies.” There’s a distinct lack of movies featuring actual superheroes superhero-ing this year, and that’s a good thing imo. Everybody needed a break. Hopefully next year’s fare is able to remind people why we liked this stuff again. The only one I’m remotely confident in achieving that at the moment is Superman. And of course Batman Part II if it makes its date. The Marvel ones with all their BTS shuffling and retooling are sketch to me until further notice.

I do know that everything Iger has said about "politics" in their movies has pretty much killed any small interest I have in MCU X-men. And the multiverse stuff has killed my interest in Deadpool.

Just give me Russel Crowe not giving a **** in Kraven and more romcom **** in Venom 3.

I dont feel superheroed out, I feel bad, AI/corporate infused, garbage, over priced blockbuster fatigued. And so far, I am unimpressed by a lot of the blockbuster trailers I have seen this year so far. Even most of the ones I am excited for are mostly cause they look like stupid movies that will be fun. Not cause they look like great movies. Ghostbusters looks bad. Apes looks boring. Twisters looks like trash. Kraven looks like trash. Etc. So many movies I may just opt to skip. If I see most of these, it's cause I wanted a night away from the kids. Not cause I actually want to watch these overpriced slogs. Whether it's a superhero like Ant-Man or action hero like Indiana Jones, if you're spending 200-300 mil on a movie, MAKE IT GOOD! Last year was full of bad, generic blockbusters and this year looks to be the same

To be fair this is the busiest period of my life ever and things should calm down after. It sort of helps me the less must-see stuff comes out. I saw 4 films in the cinema in 5 days when my friend from the US came to stay last summer, and that’s probably not far off how many I saw the rest of the year. :D :csad:

I honestly need a break too. I definitely feel superhero’d out after last year. Its good to get some counter programming in this year like Dune and Furiosa and Gladiator II and…..The Beekeeper :funny:
The Beekeeper is a work of art!

The reliance on 2 TV Show characters co-headlining was DEFINITELY a factor in the diminished interest in The Marvels, I have no doubt about that. There were other factors in play for sure, but I’ve been saying for a while that a key culprit for the MCU’s declining returns is the increasing necessary homework required to enjoy various installments. It first became clear to me with my family’s total befuddlement at Multiverse of Madness and has only become clearer ever since. The novelty of the interconnected universe has officially worn off with the GA, and it’s now crossed over into “burden” territory, imo.
I didn't see major issues with Multiverse of Madness as the story is explained well enough and largely makes sense even without WandaVision. There are some references, but the main driving force of Wanda's actions was from Infinity War.

The Marvels though I can't see possibly making any sense without the shows.

Other than Deadpool, I really struggle to think of much I want to see coming out soon. It just looks so unappealing. At least last year had stuff like Guardians, Mission: Impossible, and Oppenheimer, and I thought that year was bad. This year is a wasteland. Gladiator is one of my favorite movies and I still have zero interest in the sequel.

My family had absolutely no idea what was going on with Wanda and barely remembered her at all. As such, they found no reason to care about anything that was happening in MoM. She had less than 10 minutes of screentime in movies they saw 3-4 years prior. That’s fine for fans, who will surely rewatch stuff to refresh their memories. Too much to ask of a lot of the GA though.

The Avengers films were seen by enough people where I don't think it was that much of a problem to most of the audience, and Wanda seems to be a popular character. MoM did gross almost a billion dollars after all, a leap of $300 million over the first Doctor Strange.

I'd disagree. Wanda's entire motivation in the film is almost completely reliant on the audience having seen WandaVision beforehand. It's built completely around her relationship with her children. The casual audience member is going to be massively confused by that. Infinity War is completely irrelevant honestly as her relationship with Vision is a complete non-factor for the most part.

Agreed, and I would add last Summer had Barbie also. But this year is just....ugh. I refuse to see Gladiator 2 unless trailers are silly good and it gets like a 98% RT score. Gladiator is one of my favorites as well, and a sequel to that is just stupid.

I have mild interest in A Quiet Place Day One cause I like the previous movies, but it's also a prequel/spinoff movie by other people. So....we will see if buzz is good. But I love the idea behind those movies. Though 3 films in, how do we keep it fresh?

She wants the children she never had (and her alternate universe counterparts did) because Vision was killed by Thanos. That much can be understood from just Infinity War.

But again, I’m talking about the pattern of decline. That was the first movie where my family - who were all about going to see the latest Marvel flicks up to that point - had that disconnect. That’s their point of “ok this is too much to keep track of now.” And it was 100% because they didn’t watch WandaVision and Wanda was otherwise too insignificant a character in the movies for them to actively care about. MoM’s bad CinemaScore is evidence that other audience members felt checked out of that one too. And more and more people are experiencing that with each subsequent Marvel flick, and that’s showing in the numbers. It’s obviously taking a toll imo.

Except that's not how the film paints it. It explicitly says multiple times that she wants her children back after losing them. Her and Strange argue about it multiple times as to if the children she lost were even real, with her insisting they were. She hardly cares about Vision in the film.

Summer is a bit weaker than last year sure. For me, most the movies I want to see are all hitting March/April.

Of course, its rough when movie of the year already came out in March.

I'm sure of the dozens and dozens of plot... strings in that movie, I'm sure the audience will always remember the forced attempt at giving them romantic chemistry in that movie.

It does, which is why I acknowledged it does reference the show. But it is close enough that her motivation is still understandable without it.
