I got around to
Penguin Episode 7 this week. Another stellar episode with yet another stellar exchange between two strong characters, this time involving Sofia and Francis. Sure the debate over whether monsters are made or born is as old as literature itself, but any doubts about Oz being a cold-blooded psychopath were dispelled by this episode. A cute, cuddly antihero he ain't...
I gotta say, this show has defied my expectations at every turn. I assumed
Penguin would follow Reeves' more grounded approach to this universe, but I wasn't expecting such an intense psychological character study. I remember in an earlier episode where Oz expressed hope that "they" (the Falcone family) wouldn't turn this into just another "revenge thing," and unexpectedly enough, the show itself has complied.
This has been a 'real' show about 'real' characters who, at the moment of their actualization, are dealt crushing blows at every turn. It also doesn't help that we live in a culture more than happy to dismiss a show like this into a would-be 'comic book series' ghetto. I've had friends and co-workers tell me they tried to watch
Penguin but gave up because it's "too weird". I can't think of a higher endorsement than that, actually...
So tonight's the Big finale. I'll get around to Episode 8 sometime this week. Correct me if I'm wrong but I vaguely remember someone here posting something about a possible
Joker show in development starring Barry Keoghan? I too am completely Joker'd out at this point but I'll take as much as I can get from this universe. And seriously, WBD execs would be fools not to explore the Reeves-Verse further, after
The Batman and
The Penguin were both huge wins for the studio...
