It seems like every other day there is a new teacher involved with a student headline. Is this now part of our culture as Americans? Granted, I have not looked at statistics for our neighbor to the north and to the south, but we as a country putting up real numbers, man. We seem to be the Steph Curry of Teacher and student relations. The most recent one happened two days ago.

I was thinking that I hadn't heard any of these stories lately, but then I remembered a teacher accused of groping a student at a party he hosted.

Sadly positions of power over children are like magnets for sexual predators, be it in schools, churches or elsewhere.

I recall a HS friend or two or three having some sort of unusually friendly relationship with a teacher. And to date myself that was in the 80's. I know I had some super duper big crushes on a couple of my HS teachers but never in my awkward teenage state pursued anything. I still go for the older guy.

My high school gym teacher used to be drunk or hungover half the time and also banged girls in his office. Not much of a secret.

A gym teacher in junior high slept with a female student, and the principal of another Jr high was arrested of molestation back in the 90s. A friend of mine had semi consensual sex with her teacher in high school. She was a much older friend and was in hs in the 60s.

One former teacher was sentenced to a minimum of 5 years just a few days ago.

It's mostly gone unnoticed in the news lately. At least not that I have seen. Too many bigger fires to report on nationally I guess.

Mary Kay Letourneau was in the news a couple weeks ago because the daughters she has with her now husband, who was 12 when they started sleeping together, have become adults. I remember watching the TV movie about her in 2000.

"Epidemic" probably seems a little strong. Obviously shouldn't happen, but I don't know it'd be any higher now than it always was. You just hear about it now, it goes national-news-feeds rather than staying local.
