(June 3, 2010 – Burbank, CA) – Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) has begun production on “ThunderCats,” an all-new animated series for Cartoon Network, based upon the iconic 1980s action classic. “ThunderCats” is the newest series from WBA, joining “Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” which was recently renewed for a third season, and the following forthcoming programs: “The Looney Tunes Show,” “MAD,” “Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated” and “Young Justice.” The announcement was made today by Sam Register, Executive Vice President, Creative Affairs, Warner Bros. Animation.

“In addition to being Warner Bros. Animation’s first anime series, ‘ThunderCats’ marks our most ambitious foray yet into fantasy,” said Register. “The realism and dynamic visual style we’ve achieved are sure to thrill viewers, and the cool weapons, vehicles and technology should help the show appeal to a diverse audience.”

The 21st century reimagining of the series marks a creative collaboration between WBA and Studio4°C, one of the most vibrant animation studios in Japan, with credits including “The Animatrix,” “Gotham Knights” and “Halo Legends.” WBA is working closely with Studio4°C, utilizing the latter’s expertise to give the “ThunderCats” characters a new cutting-edge look while remaining true to the compelling storylines and mythology of the original series.

“We at Studio4°C are excited to be in this creative partnership with Warner Bros. Animation to bring ‘ThunderCats’ to life,” said Eiko Tanaka, President and CEO, Studio4°C. “This collaboration combines the strengths of our two companies – high production values and great storytelling – toward reintroducing this classic fan-favorite to a new audience.”

Roaring to life through WBA and Studio4°C’s use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, “ThunderCats” characters Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations.

The new “ThunderCats” will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

“ThunderCats” is executive produced by Sam Register (“Teen Titans,” “Ben 10,” “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”). Michael Jelenic (“Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” “Wonder Woman”) and Ethan Spaulding (“Avatar: The Last Airbender”) are the producers.

1. I'm guessing this will be cg animation.
2. I'm excited for this, to bad the press release came out so close to Stephen Perrys death.

Usually when there are new versions of cartoons from my childhood I give a meh....

But this is the god damn Thundercats! My ass will be watching with a big ass bowl of cereal when this comes out, just like the old days! :awesome:

Thundercats...one of my favorite childhood animated series!

Part of me is a bit meh about this but then there's a huge part of me thats super excited for this. Argghhh about time we got some more thundercats. Its like this was the last of the 80's toons that have had any kind of development since then!

I've introduced my kids to Thundercats, Silverhawks, and nearly every show I used to watch in the 80s. They love every single one of them, so I hope this remake is good.

That picture of Lion-O is pretty cool looking.

the only greater news they could have given us - is that they would have re-risen SWAT-FRIGGIN-CATS!

now THATS a SHOW!!!!!

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssss!

You know what, I'll bust out the Trix or Frosted Flakes too. This is a cerebration!

Dude...I will mix the Trix AND the Frosted Flakes up in this bad boy!:awesome:

You can never go too far when mixing cereal....unless you're mixing and/or eating Corn Flakes. Then you've gone too far in age.

First, let's face some hard facts about the original Thundercats cartoon...

1. It was basically another sci-fi-meets-fantasy ripoff of He-Man that was calculated to sell toys.

2. It had a fantastic opening sequence (one of the best of the '80s), but the animation quality of the episodes themselves was not nearly as good.

3. Like what was done with the He-Man reboot from 2002-2004, it has some characterizations that are going to have to be changed if anyone over the age of 10 is supposed to take the new show seriously.

So can the new Thundercats ride the delicate line between honoring the nostalgia for the old cartoon while making it more sophisticated?

Is it really going to be in 3-D, 'cause I hope not

but either way I plan on checking it out, I used to watch it on Toonami back in the day

BTW that Lion-O pick looks pretty damn cool

im interested. i hope that there is an interesting and compelling story.

new cutting edge look and sharp retelling are words that make me feel this might turn out rubbish. lets hope not. i have just had a vision that panthro will be skinny, really skinny.....

I think they'll make Panthro bigger this time. I have a feeling they might make him too husky and built so that he could be the team's powerhouse. Tygra would probably be taller and slender, and Cheetarah probably will have a nice, updated body. With Cheetarah I think they'll overboard on her looks one way or the other. Either they'll make her too bland to keep parents from complaining, or they'll give her some seriously big breast. lol
