The Trials of Shazam

You guys obviously were not paying attention so I'll explain exactly what I meant...

Now in Billy's post he talks about the girl in the bed being Freddy's sister. And I asked if Mary Marvel was Freddy's sister because I didn't know. Then I thought "what if that was someone else in the hospital" so I put "I thought that was Mary Marvel" so someone could explain to me who that was if I was incorrect. God I'm the only sane person. :p

oh NOW i catch on thanks hellstormer:ninja:

I'm Billy now? I suppose if you take away some of the letters...:p

I was talking about Billy not caring about his sister. His own sister. Not Freddy's.

Judd Winick has placed a magical curse on the grammar in this thread.
Sorry I meant to write BWilly.

I,m leaving a comment here to get this back to the top.
I haven't followed this thread unfortunately and I'm curious about the concensus here. I don't have the patience to read through 10 pages.
This series is really testing my tolerance. I'm a huge Captain Marvel fan and I have to take what I can get, but I'm really not too optimistic about the direction that this series is taking Cap. I don't like the idea of him taking on the Wizard's role and the portrayal of Freddy has me saying "What the @&*#!!!"
I feel as though this is going to have to be one of those disasters that we fans are going to have to wait out (like the clone saga in Spider-Man). I pray that eventually things will be restored to the traditional status and have good stories written about Billy as Captain Marvel; there is still so much to do. I loved the the way his relationship with Superman was played out in First Thunder and Ross seems to be playing off of that in Justice. I want to see more of that. I can't believe how let down I'm feeling about this series.:csad:

I'm liking the title and I don't mind what's going on with Billy taking the wizard's place. It looks like Osiris will be the new Cap Jr too.

I'm liking the mini as well. Don't see what all the hub bub is about. It's a cool new direction to me.

I will just keep an open mind and see how Freddy fairs as the new Captain Marvel, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Trials of Shazam #5
Oh Buffy help me, I think I actually liked this issue:(.

I don't really know quite how to explain it. Well, actually I do. Frankly, this issue was nearly devoid of Winick trying to "update" this mythos to be cool and hip and "with it," which is something that's been dragging this series down since the beginning...oh sure, Billy watches Veronica Mars, but that was actually a nice tidbit which helps more to make Billy the recognizable teen again instead of MYSTICAL PORTENTS EXPOSITIONER. It was charming. It was cute. This series frankly needs more charming and cute instead of emo goatee tattoos Middle East tomfckery. It's Captain Marvel, not the Watchmen.

Without all that nonsense of Winick trying to make Freddy down with the homies or messing with the Shazam mythos, what we've got left is a straight up, entertaining action adventure of Freddy earning the powers of Shazam one by one and proving his worth as a hero and as Billy's successor. Really, there was absolutely nothing wrong with that concept in the first place...until you start to screw with it unnecessarily. That shot of Freddy with Captain Marvel's uniform beneath his clothes granting him invulnerability was just cool. I've said before and I'll say again: Winick works great with "straightforward." The second he tries to do too much and make everything somehow Significant and Important and YouShouldPayAttention is the second his ideas get ahead of his...abilities.

(7.4 out of 10)

Eh. Freddy will ultimately get the powers and be the new Captain Marvel while Billy continues to sit around in the Rock of Eternity doing nothing. That's pretty much guaranteed, and it will always suck, so who really cares?

If you thought that, then you've got some serious taste issues.

Some issues have been awesome and some issues have been crap, and we're not sure yet if the payoff is going to balance the two. Littered through it all is the uncomfortable notion that Winick really has no idea at all what he's doing.

For what it's worth, I like this new artist more than Porter.

My taste is fine. Winick's got a record a mile long of ****ty comics, so it wasn't surprising that Trials was ****ty, too. Porter's art was nice, but the whole concept is stupid.

Not that I know of. We'll probably hear more news about that, if there is any, if Trials ever actually finishes.

If it's a post-Trials Captain Marvel comic, shouldn't it follow Freddy?
