The Trump Presidency (A Discussion)

What scares me most about the actions he's taken so far is the attempted silencing of the scientific community, specifically those that work within the government. He's attempting to restrict research that was paid for with our tax money from being released to the public.

He's also giving prevalence to falsehoods such as vaccines not being safe with notated ant-vaxxers heading panels to look into things that science has already proven without any doubt.

It's maddening.

Saw another report today that we are actually at a 40-year low of illegal immigration from Mexico right now.

We are not being left behind. We are still incredibly wealthy. We have both very high disposable income and high average salary. In education we have fallen behind and mortality rate is largely due to eating habits and sedentary lifestyles. The whole idea was to catch up everyone to us and there would be greater wealth that was the whole idea behind the Marshall Plan.

I said we're "getting left behind," although many here would argue about your high avg salary and high disposable income comments, especially given the amount of money we save as compared to other nations, and the consolidation of our wealth into our upper echeclon.

Also, I believe Marshall's Plan was to build up the rest of the world, just not to the point that we eventually "lead from behind" but perhaps I just read it differently?

Mexico's economy is doing much better....that will always keep illegal immigration down from Mexico.

Now this is an interesting comment.

Because if Trump's plan works to bring more jobs back and increase manufacturing, will that potentially increase immigration #'s because people in Mexico will be looking for work.

There are consequences for both free trade (what we've seen with factories relocating) and tariff's. The tough part for any entity is finding a balance. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

Yep, that is pretty much how it will go....drops in migration coincide with NAFTA.... :cwink:

I do find it hilarious that Trump might increase illegal immigration by making Mexico worse.

That is the problem with him, the people around him, and the people who voted for him. They have absolutely no ability to see the big picture. AND with the cartels being shut down one by one in Mexico, their economy could get even better, and the border towns can begin to thrive again. Monterrey could become the easy to access tourist town that it once was....

It is all so ridiculously STUPID.

I am still not sure how so many Americans could elect this man. I suppose it really is a poorly educated country.

All we can do is try to improve education, though I am not convinced that that's going to do it. A lot of these Republicans went to excellent schools and they still support these horrible ideas.

Trump's presidency seems like it's going to be a case study for "Faulty and Fallacious Economic Policies 101".

Well the good thing about having Republicans control... everything is that they can't shift the blame. Even Kellyanne Conway can't change the subject and talk about Hillary anymore, if not for a lack of trying.

I don't believe that the biggest problem is education in the classroom. I think it is the total dumbing down of the media. If it bleeds it leads...mentality of the media today. Reality TV, when people can be total and complete *******s on TV, and people eat it up. THAT is what has helped to get us an ******* in office.

Very true....BUT, the media has got to do its job.

I think it's going to get worse before it gets better on that score. The media has forgotten that informing the public is its primary function, not making a profit.

Looking at the median salaries the wealth in the upper echelon isn't impacting it we are literally talking about those in the middle of the income distribution here and still number one, we dipped during the recession but not anymore. The reason why we have so much disposable income compared to other countries is because they are taxed more. Savings is a whole other ball of wax that has to do with the fact that most of their money is tied up in mortgage debt which wipes out their savings and poor consumption habits. Nobody is talking about leading from behind but obviously they will catch up. They still have yet to catch up to our earning power.

What concerns me about what Trump is doing with these executive orders is that he's not running them past legal experts or the departments they affect. It's very dangerous and foolhardy. I fear Trump is going to make America an enemy of the world. We're on the wrong side of history.

See, Trump and his followers seem to be under the illusion that we live in a unipolar world where America is king and everyone else exists and functions at its pleasure. The reality is that America is a power in decline, and that there are other powers on the verge of becoming superpowers. America may very well be supplanted as the world's most powerful country in our lifetimes.

In the present, however we are also very dependent on foreign countries for goods and services. If this immigration ban insanity is any indication of what Trump is ready to do, he may really start a trade war with the whole world.

Also, the one area where we are doing well is technology, and keeping these people out will bite him in the ass when our tech companies move to the countries where the people they want to hire are....which will happen quickly, considering the CEO's of Microsoft and Google are immigrants. :)

I still remember his speech after his visit to Mexico where he said "We're like the big bully that keeps getting beat up" to me it said an awful lot about how Trump sees the US and its place in the World.

I really like Ana Navarro.

She is pretty much the Kirsten Powers of Conservative journalists.
