The Twelve Year Absence

this (thread) might've made it to 12 year absence back in 70's, but 10 months in times like these seems just right..

The twelve year absence from STM was another Christian reference from writer, Tom Mankiewicz and Richard Donner.

Here's and interesting list from Superman Cinema that details most of the important religious references from the film:

RELIGIOUS REFERENCES IN SUPERMAN THE MOVIE

When Tom Mankiewicz was hired to oversee the script he threw out all of the camp elements that Mario Puzo had included in his original draft. It was decided that they would either ignore the second coming similarities or dive head first into them. He took the dive and here are some of them :

1) Jor-El (God) casts out Zod (Satan) from Krypton (Heaven)

2) The speech Jor-El gives as he and Lara say goodbye to Kal-El "...the son becomes the father and the father the so..."

3) The ship that brings Kal-El to Earth is in the form of a star (the star of Bethlehem)

4) Kal-El comes to a couple unable to have children "...how we prayed and prayed the good Lord see fit to give us a child."

5) Just as there is not much known about Jesus during his middle years Clark travels into the wilderness to find out who he really was and what he had to do.

6) "... you must live as one of them but always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage. They can be a great people Kal-El, they wish to be, they only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, there capacity for good, I have sent them you, my only son." Need I say more?

7) Superman starts his work in his thirtieth year - the same age Jesus was when he left Nazareth to preach

There would have been more if Richard Donner could have completed his story of the fall and resurrection and his battle with evil in Superman II.

well good thing they are releasing the donner cut of SII

i think this is how the rest of the season is goin down

1. Lionel dies protecting Clark's secret from Lex
2. Lex causes the death or miscarriage of Lana's baby and she breaks off the engadgment
2. Clark rounds up all the Zoners
3. Lana finds out about Clark's secret but Clark has to leave her and complete his training
4. Chloe joins the FBI and is reintroduced in the comics

there wont be a 7th season

Actually, there will be a 7th season (thankfully:woot: ).
And because of that, I'm betting (and hoping) that season 7 picks up at the end of Clark's training in the FOS and then he goes out around the world and by the end of the season becomes :super:

The twelve year training session was on of the things I didn't like about the movie and it shouldn't be repeated. I don't mind the world journey, but it's kinda Batman-ish.

Id have it be more of a spiritual journey than anything, Clark deciding what HE wants to do. I still beleive Clark needs to become Superman on his own accord, not Jor-El's or anyone else's. Thats just my personal opinion though!!!

Actually that concept appear in both characters almost at the same time. During Bryne's revamp in Superman in1986, Clark Kent travelled around the world before he estabilished himself in metropolis.

The Donner Superman was clearly the most intelligent educated Superman. 12 years in the Fortress learning everything about the universe and of humanity from Jor-el...Holy.

Compare/contrast with an ep in SV season 4: Clark in the Talon; cheerleaders come in & invite him to a hot-tub party; he says he can't because he's studying TRIG. His senior year. Not too good in math, is he?

Trig? In senior year? Sounds about right to me. o_o Because he's not in something like Calculus his senior year he's some kind of mathematically-deficient lunkhead?

Anyway, a couple things:

Chloe in the comics: NO.

And I don't like the idea of Clark doing the whole 12 year thing. It didn't seem right to me in the movie, and it doesn't seem right to me now.

gawsh i love it when my threads get rsurected ..............Yay team!
