Comics The Ultimate Comics Spider-Man Thread!!!

The Gwen thing confused me, 'cause I kinda fell off of Ultimate after the Clone Saga (though do they explain why she's in the classic look instead of the punk look she had before?), but it was a pretty good issue.

Well, as you know, Gwen came back in the Clone Saga. After that, we didn't see her again until the two last issues of War of the Symbiotes. In that arc, Venom assimilated completely the symbiote in her, and all that was left was a perfect molecular copy (as in, not a clone) of her body with all of her memories.

As for the changes in look, I sincerely don't know. But in her few appearances since her revival, Gwen was always lost, confused, something understandable after dying and getting better from it, I suppose. Before Ultimatum, I don't think I could have imagined her with a dress, yet she wore one. All in all, it seems like her death experience has "softened" her, making her less punk (she still is, to an extent : she has a face piercing and the cover for issue #1 shows her with worn out jeans) than before. There is also the headband that really makes her look like her 616 counterpart, and the fact that here eyes went inexplicably from amber colored to blue colored.

I still always saw Gwen as more of a sister to Peter in the Ultimate Universe so I dont really like this new direction they are taking

^me either. so he has a live in girlfriend?

Some proofreading in this issue would've been nice.

Besides Marvel not putting this through a Spell Check, Bendis needs to start showing more of what's changed in Peter's life. He's teasing too much and it shows right from the first page- too much decompression. Otherwise, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #2 was good. I'm hoping things start picking up in the next issue, though it seems like a fair share of #3 will be devoted to Johnny Storm's story.

I thought I was ok with the new art style but im really not, especially after seeing Kitty. I think I may actually drop the book until a new artist comes on board, its that jarring for me.

I thought the same thing. Before reading #1 I thought "Ugh, this looks bad".

Then after reading #1 I thought "Hmm. This isn't too bad at all! I just don't like Spidey's balloon head".

Then after this issue I reeeeeally don't like the art half of the time. Part of it's great! Like Mysterio! But I'm really bothered by Gwen, MJ, Kitty, Peter, Spidey's Head...and what's up with Kong?? :(

Yes exactly!

It almost feels to me like the Mysterio stuff is being drawn by a different artist

I really enjoyed this issue myself, I like the art, the new characters (okay, that young woman got to watch her mouth) are funny and well-drawn, the dialogue is still good.

Am I the only one who felt like this issue was kinda "darker" than the previous one? The whole thing in the lunch room, Kitty being picked on because of her powers, Kong trying to defend her, Flash being the biggest jerk ever, the "fight" between Kitty and MJ (okay, Bendis really got to stop with the tease on that part, tell us what happened already), all this was pretty serious when compared to the previous issue, and even the rest of the issue.

Yeah, absolutely. Lafuente could get one on his art too, the outfit Gwen is wearing on the page where she waves "good bye" at Spidey doesn't match at all with what she was wearing in the previous panels : no more stripes on the top, and she doesn't wear pants anymore.

Speaking of David, I just hope he will get back to the Annual 3 for Kong, he was way better in that one.

Its kind of going to be the pot calling the kettle black when Spidey starts referring to Mysterio as bubble-head or fish-bowl head... Hopefully they'll have a new artist by then...

Given Mysterio's look, I doubt he will do this kind of joke. Last time we knew, he said that Mysterio was "A guy with a cloud for a head".

He draws Spidey to reflect his age, pretty much. He's a 15 year old kid, still on the awkward side, and not exactly looking like a college student even.

I think Mark Bagley and Stuart Immonen captured the fifteen year old perfectly. This guy draws him like he's ten years old.

agreed. His artwork seems real hit and miss with me. And what the hell happened to Kong?! Damn they turned him from a pretty cool guy that I connected with to a complete and utter tool.

Granted the whole Spider-man melon head style can get a bit out of hand at times, but it doesn't really bother me too much. The only problem I've had with the art so far is Peter's hair length. It's too damn long. I thought that Bagley had the hair perfectly. It's really annoying me at times. Other then that though, the artwork fits so well into the USM universe. It's no Bagley....but I'm loving it so far.

Onto the issue....it was a great. Bendis is off to a really good start off with this "reboot". I have no idea how the guy manages to fit so much content into one issue. That's one thing that was always clear about Bendis in USM when he was on his game. He pays attention to every character. So glad that Kitty hasn't been forgotten and it's pretty clear that she's a permanent character on USM now. My heart is aching for MJ though. I'm really awaiting an issue or two that can explain everything that happened in regards to Peter, Gwen and MJ. Like someone else mentioned earlier, it seems like Peter and MJ can't stay happen in any universe now. I don't mind them breaking up in USM because if the past is any indication they will be back together in no time. For now, Peter and Gwen is a nice twist. I'm just hoping that Bendis fully explores all the potential that he has going on with this "love triangle" or square or if you throw in Kitty into the mix.

Only negative with the issue is Johnny. I have no idea where Bendis is going with that. The character just doesn't seem to fit in at the moment. I honestly thought he was dead after Ultimatum.

If it turns out the rest of the FF are dead and he's not, May might end up taking him in.

I read the second issue this evening. I am really trying to have this artist grow on me and it's just not happening. :csad: There are places where he seems to be all right, like the opening shots with Mysterio. That was some good stuff. Though after that it just didn't do anything for me. Spider-Man's head is gigantic and when he puts the costume on suddenly he looks like he's a ten or eleven year old.

Not too much really progressed in the story. Some minor movements. And what the HELL happened to Kong?! :wow:

I love how Bendis takes characters from other titles and makes them a normal member of the cast in USM. IE Kitty Pride, and now hopefully, Johnny Storm. Especially now that the Fantastic Four don't have a title, I'd love to see Johnny become a member of the usual cast in USM. He doesn't have to be in every issue or be the center piece like Pete, but using him like they use Jameson, Venom, or Flash (by occurances or plot-lines) would be very interesting IMO.

Yeah, teens can be pretty hard to draw, because you literally need to combine the characteristics of a child and of an adult while still looking anatomically correct. A lot of comic book artists have difficult times doing the regular human body realistically, let alone teenagers.

The task may wind up being more the responsibility of the colorist or inker then necessarily the original artist. The inker show which lines are important and stark, and the colorist can change the whole picture by their emphasis on tones and shadows.

Bagley's Ultimate Peter Parker was my fave, but he did make him look a little older than his age. Immonen did a good job. Lafuente's taken a while to get used to, but I like his stuff well enough.

Agreed. Bagley also isn't a newcomer when it comes to drawing Spider-Man. His artwork on Amazing Spider-Man back in the 90s was so good.
