The "Ultimate DC" RPG

I take another sip of my drink as I watch the crowd around me. Big wigs like Luthor from Metropolis, those two reporters from the Planet, Captain Atom, Flash. Something was going on...I can feel it I just can't put my finger on it. The corner of my eye catches sight of a man leaning over the balcony of the dining hall, watching us. Bruce Wayne.

I turn and smile at Jason interrupting his conversation with another person.
"I'll be right back." He nods.

I turn to the doctor.

"Tommy, it was good to meet you and I enjoyed our conversation. If you're ever in Gotham for any amount of time feel free to look me up." I said earnestly before placing my glass on the bar and making my way through the crowd. Taking some side stairs I make my way up to him.

I pause behind him as he either ignores me or doesn't register that I'm there.

"Do you often bail on your own parties?" I ask.
"Likewise, Ms. Lance", replied "Tommy" with a courteous nod, "it was a pleasure meeting you. And I might have to take you up on that offer, next time I'm in town."

Dinah smiles, places her glass on the bar, and walks away. J'onn finishes his drink and cracks his neck, getting himself ready to make his move on the Flash.
"It was good meeting you, Mr. Bard", said "Tommy" as he shook Jason's hand.

"Likewise, Tommy."

J'onn walks off towards the rooms exit, doing a quick scan of the entire grounds while he walks. Finally, he finds a spot in the back of the house that is empty. The perfect place for his conversation with the Flash to take place.

Moving through the crowd, J'onn makes his way towards one of the butlers.

"Excuse me, could you tell me where the bathroom is?"

"Certainly, sir. Go down the hallway to your right, and it will be the third door on the left side."

"Thank you", replies "Tommy" as he moves down the hall and enters the bathroom.
As soon as he enters the bathroom and shuts the door, J'onn turns himself invisible and phases through the wall and onto the grounds.
Floating above the crowd outside, J'onn made his way towards the back of the house.
Flying through a large and lush garden, J'onn made his way towards a secluded well away from any prying eyes. Positioning himself phased inside of a copse of trees, and still invisible, J'onn mentally reached out and contacted the Flash.

"Barry Allen, the Flash. Do not be alarmed. I'm speaking to you mentally via my telepathy. My name is J'onn J'onnz, and I mean you no harm. I have something important I need to speak to you about. A proposition of great importance."
"I am now sending you a mental map so you know where to find me on the manor grounds. Come alone and come quickly."

J'onn cut off his mental link, sat back still invisible and intangible in the trees, and waited...

IC: Bruce Wayne

I've made several rounds, keeping my eye on everyone as I manuovered through the crowd. To hell with worrying about paranoia. If I'm paranoid, then I am. I'm not about to change that just because some consider it a symptom of insanity. After all, I dress up like a gigantic Bat at night. I think my days of complete sanity are long since passed.

Lex Luthor talking with the rather tall and the rather boring escort that accompanied Lois Lane. The Captain sharing a few drinks with The Flash, at the bar. Lance hitting up conversation with Doctor Elliot. Oswald Cobblepot discussing buisness with Norman Madison and his daughter. At least he's moved away from Rachel...

Making my way back up the staircase, I nod and smile at some of the models from the Gotham Beauty Pagent, this past month. Hope somebody saw that... Because at this point, I need all the help I can get at furthering my goal of making Bruce Wayne seem like... well, a pig.

Walking back over to the balcony, I lean over it again, and sigh, sipping my last drop of wine. Surprisingly, I've managed to keep it's affects on me thinned out ever since I started drinking it. I'm still quite sober. At least... I hope I'm still quite sober. Can't afford to lose track of any happenings just because I've become somewhat tipsy...

Wait. Luthor. I manage to spot him as he walks back through the crowd, and out of the room, pulling a cell phone from his pocket. Part of me is saying 'Ignore it'. But the other part of me thinks I should go after him. After all, while he did make me a merger offer, He could be here to simply spy on the competition. And I can't afford that, especially with the fall season coming up. Lots of deals, lots of offers... lots of things I don't care about. But Bruce Wayne should...

As I contemplate it, a voice sets in, behind me.

"Do you often bail on your own parties?"

I turn, eyebrow raised, as Dinah Lance stands across from me. How did I lose track of her... ...-Luthor. Damn it, I shouldn't have worried about him. I could've seen her coming and better prepared myself. Now I have to wing it. Well, here goes nothing...

I smirk at her, leaning over the balcony. That's it, Bruce. Laid back... That's what you want everyone to think of you...

"Hard to say, Miss Lance. I'm usually on the guest list of a party like this... this is the first time I've actually made it."

I smirk at him before walking next to him and leaning over to look at the crowd below. That would be the first clue, the fact that he hardly ever threw parties and yet this one. It could also be the reason why something feels odd.

"What made you decide to throw one then?"

I spin around and face the other direction.

"Were you really that bored?"

“HOW THE F**K, did you know that?!?”

“I told you numb nuts, I was your mother’s personal guard. The only reason I wasn’t there to protect you two that day is she ordered me not to come. Your other brother escaped when Orm overthrew and killed your father. He came briefly into contact with me, and has since vanished. I fear the worst. You were blatantly stupid, Junior. You should NEVER swim with that charm you have hanging around your neck.”

“Why’s that, Gramps? And stop calling me junior.”

“Because that charm is the key to the realm that Atlantis is hidden in. When you near its borders, it will open the gates and alerts them to your presence. Its how they found your mother, and its how they found you, Junior.”

“The f**k was I supposed to know that?”

“Because it opened the gate when your mother was killed. It also opened the gate earlier today.”

“How did you know that?!?”

“I run the lighthouse. And a 3 mile high column of blue energy is hard to miss, Junior.”

“Fine, so what do you want me to do? Throw it away and hide?”

“No. Hiding would do you no good. The Siren has your scent, feel and taste now. She will hunt you down, and you would die. No, you don’t hide. You claim your birthright, you fight.”

“I don’t WANT to fight.”

“Then everyone you know will die. Siren’s are cruel beasts.”

Garth thought of his step-father. While it was a rare occurrence that they agreed on anything, he still loved the man. He thought about Eva, she had been his best friend since the second grade. That’s the only reason he still had a job, he loved her like a sister. He didn’t want either of them to get hurt, especially because of him.

“Fine. I’ll do it. What do I have to do?”

“Now. We train, and fast. Follow me.” McCaffery started walking towards the lighthouse. “You already know how to use some of your natural abilities. You’ve found yourself to be amazingly fast in the water, but that’s only a fraction of your speed. You’ve found yourself able to hold your breath underwater for long periods of time, but have you ever tried to breath? You could. You seem strong, but only as strong as you think you can. Your physiology is adapted to live in crushing undersea pressures, you’re stronger than you think you are. The only two things I need to teach you are to rely on your instincts to keep you alive in the water, and to use Atlantean weaponry.”

“Like tridents?”

“Tridents and cutlasses for hand to hand yes. But more importantly, mental weaponry.”

“Mental?”

“You’ve felt empathic connections with creatures of the sea, correct? Expand on that. You should be able to direct them with your mind.”

“…you mean I can talk to fish? What kind of lame ass power is that?!?”

“Lame enough that you can turn a man into a vegetable by shutting off the neural synapses in his brain. Every creature evolved from the sea, some just take more effort to connect too. Being of royal blood, it will be easier for you.”

That’s kind of impressive. I think I could end up liking this.

They entered the lighthouse and McCaffery opened a secret trap door in the floor. Garth followed him to the basement, and found a room that was full of golden weaponry, and a large pool leading to the sea.

“Badass. Where’d you get all this?”

“I too am Atlantean, remember? I got it from sunken ships.”

McCaffery grabbed a large chest and chucked it at Garth. “Catch!”

“I CAN’T THAT’S HUGE!” Garth yelled, and as he put his arms out to try and catch it, it knocked him back and landed on him.

“God, did you not listen to a word I said? You only can’t because you think you can’t. Now get it off your chest.”

“…ca… can’t… to.. too heavy…” Garth struggled for breath.

“Well then I guess you’re dead then, huh? Because I’m not going to help you.”

Anger flashed in Garth’s eyes. “ARRGH!!!” He threw the chest off of him and McCaffery dodged as it landed where he had been standing, and shattered into splinters and thousands of gold coins.

“You f**king bastard.”

“I knew you could do it. Now go swim, and don’t think about holding your breath or how fast you’re going. And leave the charm here.”

“I’m not going to go swimming with jeans and I sure as hell ain’t going nude.”

McCaffery walked over to another chest and opened it. “Fine wear this. It’s Atlantean Sentient armor. It will conform to your body and provide more protection than anything a surface dweller could come up with. Being alive, you should try to remain in contact with it at all times, think of this swim as a full on practice for the abilities I’ve told you about. And take this trident as protection.” He threw Garth the two things, and the armor immediately molded itself around Garth, covering him in thick dark green scales and golden ornate bands around his hands, feet and waist.

“I opened my mind like you said too, and its true, I can hear this thing think… that’s creepy.”

“You'll get used to it. Now go, practice for the near future.”

Garth dived into the pool and began swimming towards the open sea.

Odd. Her tone seems... suspicious. As if she's trying to pry something else out of me, other than what she asked. Then again, she is a detective. That's part of her job. Still, she should lighten up. Enjoy herself. It isn't everyday that someone is invited to something as high profile as this. I pause, thinking that. Maybe I should begin to take my own advice...

"Well, truth be told, I was losing popularity.", I answer. "You can only secure so many buisness deals and attend so many shindigs that after awhile, people tend to get bored of you unless you throw your own hat into the right, so to speak."

I turn, looking back out at the party.

"I guess I just wanted to remind everyone why the Wayne's were always the life of the party.", I say, putting on another smirk.

"hopelly there won't be mad bomber in Keystone City, but I was just speaking in generality."

"Nate, I'm pretty sure this kid has all the best intentions in mind. He's not a threat, All your primary objectives are completed. You can either socalize or leave."

I think about it for a second, I had fun but I'm pretty sure I've meet some good folks I hope to work with soon.

"Nate, You may want to leave, we have a potential situation in Star City."

I sit down my drink and hold out my hand for Flash.

"Mr. Allen, if you'll exscue me I have to use the restroom."
Barry shook his hand. "Touching you ain't gonna give me cancer, is it? Anyway, see ya later Cap."

Barry's eyes went wide as he 'heard' that. "Barry, whats wrong?" Tina asked him.

"Uh... I think I'm... gonna hurl..."

"You should hav" Barry was gone. "... taken it easy on the alcohol, she says to herself."

Barry went to where the message had showed him and looked around, seeing nothing.

I ignore his words as I make my way out of the party, passing photographers and autograph seekers. I accidently bump into the jungle man.

"My bad."

I don't give him time to respond, I walk out the doors of Wayne Manor and take off into the air.

"What's the status General?"

"Well Nate, We have reports of a group of terrorist holding hostages at the Coast City, There leader is a woman who is calling herself Plastique. We have reason to believe that she's a Metahuman, Now haul ass to Coast City soilder."

Coast City? That's halway across the country. I shift all the power to my lower body and speed up, I feel a small pop as I break the sound barrier. I smile as Gotham City fades away.

It's time for the Captain to go to work.

I raise my eyebrow at his last statement, yep still the egotistical man I met before.

"Yes, you're doing lots remind people Wayne's are the life of the party. Everyone is noticing your absence." I comment motioning wide out over the crowd with my arm before giving him a sideways smile.

Hmm..there's something else something..my eyes rest on his jawline, a good view from where I'm at, his profile is strong. I mentally shake my head. Jeez Dinah you're picking them up like flies, at least in your mind.

Maybe I'm being to harsh on him.

{Harvey Dent}

As Two Face explains his plan to his lackeys about a heist at the Gotham Museum I can't get Wayne's party out of my mind, I probably would of been invited if all this crap didnt happen to Gilda and I. What can it hurt to show up? Stop by a costume shop bye a mask and just walk in, a big party like that I doubt every door in the mansion would be locked.

"So what about the secruity system?"

"Don't worry about that boss, just give us a couple of days to scope the place out and im sure we won't have any problems."

I feel my face smile.

"Good."

"So its just take whatever we can grab?"

"Do whatever you please once we're inside, just aslong as I get what I want."

Three hours later.......

After an hour of searching I find a costume shop and buy a mask (a replica of the mask the Phantom wore in The Phantom of the Opera) which the guy running the shop said I don't need cause I have "great make up" already on. Ignoring his remark I pull the mask on and walk out of the shop.

J'onn stood in amazement as Barry Allen seemingly appeared out of thin air.
He was fast.

J'onn, still in the guise of Tommy Elliot, left the trees and made himself visible and tangible. Making sure to stay back from the Flash as he didn't want to make Barry think he was threatening him in any way, J'onn spoke.
"Greetings, Mr. Allen. It's a pleasure to meet you. And thank you for coming here so quickly", said J'onn with a smile.

"...DUDE! You seriously shouldn't do that to people... I'd swear you weren't here just a second ago.... and is there anyother way to do things than quickly?"

"Perhaps", replied J'onn with a half smirk.
"As for me not being here a second ago", continued J'onn as he went invisible once again, "you are not the only one with gifts."

After a few seconds of showing off his invisibility, J'onn made himself visible once more. Even though he wouldn't admit to it outright, J'onn was enjoying this little meeting with another super-powered individual. It was allowing him to finally act like himself.
Now, what reaction Barry would give him when he showed him his true form...well, that would be interesting.

Coast City, California

I touch down at Reynolds Air Force Base just outside of Coast City, General Eiling is waiting for me as well as a few technicans.

"Okay Nate there gonna help you put on your suit while I brief you on some of the details."

One of the techs takes my jaket off and another unties my bowtie and starts to unbutton my shirt.

"Okay this Plastique chick seems to show powers similar to you, in the fact that she can create exsplosions and she also appears to be a expert in exsplosives and demolition so approach this carefully."

A Tech takes off my shoes while another strips off my pants, two techs pull my power suit up over my body and one slips my feet into the boots.

"Now her and a small group of terrorist are holding hostages at Coast City Hall demanding a twenty five million dollars and a helicopter ride to Mexico. We want you to approach the situation with extreme caution and don't intervene until we get approval."

One of the technicans hands me a pair of gloves and I put them on.

"One more thing Nate, after you get back from this mission I'm gonna be in Washington talking to some bigwigs, If all works out there could be something big in the works for me and you."

I nod, the idea of a something big intrigues me.

"That all General?"

"That's all soilder, now report to City Hall, I'll be monitoring you through video feed as well as satelittes."

I salute him and look off towards Coast City.

I blast off into the night air and towards my next mission.

As he swam, he was amazed at how in tune with him the suit was, and at how much it helped him. He remembered the things McCaffery had told him, and tried taking a breath, knowing that if the old man was wrong, he still had time to surface. Water flowed into his lungs, and then back out. His lungs were processing the oxygen in the water for him, he was breathing the water. Finding it much easier to focus now, he tried going faster, he bulleted through the water like a torpedo, going faster than he could have ever imagined. Doing so, he lost his concentration on his surroundings, and clipped a shark. Feeling the impact he stopped and spun around to see what he had hit. The shark came after him, and one thought went through his mind.

This is going to f**king hurt… a lot…

Before the shark could bite him, the suit reacted instinctively, protruding mildly poisonous spines for protection.

Sweet! Wait, I don’t want to hurt the shark, and McCaffery said that I can telepathically communicate with them.

~~~STOP. CALM DOWN. YOU DON’T WANT TO HURT ME. I DON’T WANT TO HURT YOU. SWIM AWAY~~~
Garth looked on in astonishment as the shark stopped and swam off in the opposite direction.
Okay, so the old man has been right about everything…
Just then, a hole in the water opened behind him sucking the water into the void created. He spun around while desperately swimming in the other direction. He looked down and saw the gaping maw of something no human had ever lived through to describe. He didn’t know it, but he was looking into the mouth of the Kraken.
"Oh s**t."
J'onn smirked. This Flash was definitely a character.
"My powers are my birthright, but that is a conversation for another day. As for what I want..."
"You're a good person, Barry Allen", said J'onn after a brief pause, "and the cities of Keystone and Central are lucky to have a hero of your caliber looking out for them. But, they aren't the only places that need protection."
J'onn walked towards the old, brick well and leaned against it's edge.
"The United States government's Department of the Interior and Department of Homeland Security are joining forces to put together a team of super-powered individuals to help defend the country and the planet against all super-powered threats. We would like to have the Flash on this team."
I passby Coast City landmarks with record speed. Ditko Stadium, Ferris Aircraft, Finger & Kane Industries.
"So Wade, what's the status on this new mission?"
"Classified Nate, but I will say this much. It has something to do with that doctor you met at the Wayne party."
"I knew there was something weird about him, spill it."
I hear him clear his throat as I land near city hall.
"Later soilder, now get to work."
I hear the audio click off and I'm alone
"Captain Atom sir."
I see a police officer get my attention and point towards a tarp outside of City Hall.
"There waiting for you."
He escorts me to the tarp were a small crowd of police officers and F.B.I. agents are huddled around a table.
"Captain Atom, Welcome we want you to help with the S.W.A.T. team."
I shake a agents hand as he welcome me in.
"You had training in S.W.A.T. tactics?"
"Yes sir, The goverment trained me in almost every area of combat and law enforcment."
Which exsplains the three years I spent before I underwent the procedure that gave me my powers.
"Good, Will let you tag along with Sgt. Lee."
Ten Minutes Later.
I'm hovering just outside of the doors of city hall.
"Okay Captain Atom, when I give the signal you burst in and take out the nearest terrorist."
Sgt. Lee talks me through it while I wait and let the energy in my body channel through my hands.
"GO!"
I slam into the door and burst through it, taking out terrorist left and right, I'm dodging bullets when a fireball exsplodes near my head.
"Captain Atom I presume."
As Two Face explains his plan to his lackeys about a heist at the Gotham Museum I can't get Wayne's party out of my mind, I probably would of been invited if all this crap didnt happen to Gilda and I. What can it hurt to show up? Stop by a costume shop bye a mask and just walk in, a big party like that I doubt every door in the mansion would be locked.
"So what about the secruity system?"
"Don't worry about that boss, just give us a couple of days to scope the place out and im sure we won't have any problems."
I feel my face smile.
"Good."
"So its just take whatever we can grab?"
"Do whatever you please once we're inside, just aslong as I get what I want."
Three hours later.......
After an hour of searching I find a costume shop and buy a mask (a replica of the mask the Phantom wore in The Phantom of the Opera) which the guy running the shop said I don't need cause I have "great make up" already on. Ignoring his remark I pull the mask on and walk out of the shop.
Almost everyone in Gotham knows where Wayne Manor is so it wasent hard to find a cabbie willing to take me out there, the hard part was finding a cabbie that can get me there in less than an hour. But with acouple hundred and a cab going over ninty I was able to get there in half an hour, I tell the cabbie to stop at the gate.
"Are you sure man? I mean I could pull up at the house, I mean the gate is open."
"Its ok, I'll walk the rest of the way."
I give him the cab fair and get out, sneaking in the bushes to get a view of the front door.
"S**t! I did'nt thought they'd have someone watching the front door, I guess I'll have to find another way in."
Trying to keep as silent as possible I sneak around the back searching for a way in. After a few minutes of searching in the dark I finally find a door.
"Please be unlocked."
I grab the handle and turn it, with a click the door opens.
"Good finally something is working out tonight."
I brush the leaves off my suit and make sure the scarred side of my face is covered by the mask.
"Ok here goes."
I slip inside and close the door behind me.
"Alright, ladies and germs, let's see what we've got cooking this fine afternoon."
Peter came strolling into his laboratory, announcing his presence to his staff with a smile on his face. He picked up the daily progress report lying on his desk, and began eating an orange as he sat on the corner of his desk, reading it.
Hm. I guess the rock does react as we expected when exposed to any form of broadcast signal. The ambient temperature around it increases at a controlled rate, energy waves have been catalogued around it, hell, even gravity seems to have a varying effect on the stone while it's in this state.
Silverstone sat for another twenty minutes, reading the report, before turning off the digital notepad and putting it back onto his desk. "It seems all of our theories were right on the money from the start," Peter said to himself. He stood up straight and looked at the specimen in question. It was a small carved and polished stone. It was so black that you could trick your eyes into thinking that the very light around it was being sucked into it, as if it were a black hole. Since its arrival at Silverstone's lab, the rock had been attached to numerous cables and wires for testing. Peter stared at the artifact from across the room for a few moments as his staff passed by, unaware of their boss' trance-like state.
"I guess the only thing left to do is test its limits."
Peter sat in his large comfy chair in his living room, reading the newspaper and contemplating the day's earlier discoveries when his wife silently crept up behind him and lovingly wrapped her arms around him and kissed his cheek, surprising him.
"I take it work was just as thrilling today as it was yesterday?" she asked.
Peter rolled his eyes and chuckled lightly. "Oh yeah, same old, same old." He folded the newspaper and put it aside. "United Broadcasting is still going down the toilet, and everyone's still looking to me to find a way to use our new project to save everyone's sorry asses from having to stand in the unemployment line." He sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose, "I mean, sure, I could always just get a job for one of Lexcorp's media branches, but I actually like working for United. Yeah, it's a lot of responsibility right now, but once the company picks back up and things go back to the way they were before, it'll be clear sailing and we can go on that vacation."
Delilah sat across Peter's lap and kissed him again, this time with slight concern in her eyes. "So you really were serious about going to the Caribbean when this is all over." More of a statement than a question.
"Yeah," Peter held his wife closer, "we just have to get over these last few hurdles at the company, and then--" he stopped talking when he saw his son, David, approaching them with the cordless phone in his hand.
"Dad, it's some guy at United Broadcasting. He says that something really bad's happened."
Delilah hopped off of her husband's lap as he stood up and accepted the phone and held it to his ear. "Yes?"
"Peter?" the voice on the other end sounded almost frightened.
"Yeah, it's me. What's wrong?"
"Pete, we've got a huge problem. The rock's gone! Someone stole it!"
"Yes, you're doing lots remind people Wayne's are the life of the party. Everyone is noticing your absence." I comment motioning wide out over the crowd with my arm before giving him a sideways smile.
I put on another smile, looking right back at her.
"Well, if you consider a five minute buisness proposition a noticeable absence, Miss Lance, that's your buisness.", I respond, lifting my glass to sip another drink, and acting like I've just realised the glass is empty.
I can't help but think that everytime I find myself in conversation with her, this evening, she's questioning me for a greater purpose. And while I'm aware that it's her profession to be questionable of anything, really... The only reason I'm worried is because I also realise how bitter she could very well be at The Batman for requesting information and not keeping his promised reappearance to collect it. And given that my identity is still very much private knowledge, I can't really explain that the reason I never did is because I was nearly killed that night.
So I guess... I'm stuck playing coy. Terrific. As if this night didn't provoke enough stress...
I turn, noticing another guest enter. One with a halfway facemask, like the one wore in the stage production of "The Phantom Of The Opera". I can't help but be a little more intrigued by this... Because...
I look away.
...Because that same play is the last thing either of my parents saw, the night they were murdered in cold blood. I remember the image of the man in the mask draped in the dark cloak and hidden in the shadows so vividly. It scared me. But more importantly, it may have actually inspired my current way of life... even if unintentional.
I turn back to Lance, hiding my discomfort with the newest arrival. Ignore it, Bruce... there are just some things that are beyond your control. Don't let a little thing like a mask throw you off balance...
...
Yes, I realise the irony in that statement.
"So tell me... How goes the exciting life of a Gotham City investigator, these days? Sure seems to be alot of excitement on the streets... At least, according to the tabloids. But I know how reliable they can be.", I say, with a laugh.
I can't help but smile as I walk among the crowd, its amazing how much you miss interaction with other people when you've become completely cut off from the rest of the world.
"Excuse me sir."
I turn around expecting the worst only to see a waiter.
"Would you like somthing to drink?"
I relax and take a glass of champaign off the tray he was carrying.
"Thank you."
"Your welcome sir."
As I take a drink I notice across the room the most beautiful woman iv ever seen (except for Gilda of course), my jaw drops when I recognize who she is.
"Rachel?"
J'onn smirked. This Flash was definitely a character.
"My powers are my birthright, but that is a conversation for another day. As for what I want..."
"You're a good person, Barry Allen", said J'onn after a brief pause, "and the cities of Keystone and Central are lucky to have a hero of your caliber looking out for them. But, they aren't the only places that need protection."
J'onn walked towards the old, brick well and leaned against it's edge.
"The United States government's Department of the Interior and Department of Homeland Security are joining forces to put together a team of super-powered individuals to help defend the country and the planet against all super-powered threats. We would like to have the Flash on this team."
"What you mean... like the Justice Society of the comics? I'm honored and hell yes I'd give it a shot. Need something to keep me busy..."
Barry grinned and then looked to J'onn.
"So you can make yourself invisible and read minds... anything else I should know about before a combat situation?"
I lean over the banister next to him and study the people below.
Helena and Josh are conversing together with another couple, I roll my eyes as her laugh filters from the general buzzing, I soften a little when I see Jason, he's managed to join a group of single men and his almost constant laughter and mouth movements indicate he's having a good time.
I look over at my involuntary partner, he seems, on edged. Even though he's trying to cover it his eyes are preoccupied by something that'snot in this room. And him reaction to the man in the mask. I study the man in the mask, hmm...looks familiar well the side of the face that's visible anyway. Awfully dramatic way to come to a charity dinner. I keep my eyes on him as I address
Bruce.
"Oh, it goes. Haven't really had any cases recently, the ones I have had have hit dead ends."
Literally. and let's not forget being stood up a few nights ago. Seriously, heroes in mom's day were more courteous. They'd show up to keep an appointment if they were almost dead and if they were dead, they'd send a telegram.
Phones were there for a reason, or maybe they didn't have any in whatever cave he crawled out of. I stop my inner monoluge and smile at Bruce.
"And the Gotham Socialite? How is his world?"
Weird being so chummy with this guy, especially after our last meeting. My eyes lower for a second to his jaw line.
"There are a few things", replied J'onn as he phased through the brick well and moved to stand in front of Barry, "but, now is not the time to reveal them all."
"When the time comes for us to gather, I will contact you telepathically. When I do, head to a building in Washington DC called the Watchtower. You will know where to find it when it's time."
Phantom Of The Opera. A phantom... a terrible being hiding in the shadows, willing to do only god knows what to those he preys on in the lighted world. Therein lies the mystery of what kind of man, or beast he can be. And how much he's willing to destroy in order to accomplish his unknown... perhaps maddening goal.
Not the best first memory. But highly ironic. Now I finally understand what criminals see when they're met face to face with The Batman. And if I'm right... I'm doing something right, at least.
My thoughts stray back to conversation as Lance finally speaks up.
Weird being so chummy with this guy, especially after our last meeting. My eyes lower for a second to his jaw line.
Dull. Incredibly, unfathomably dull.
"Wonderful, actually.", I answer. "You meet so many interesting people on a nightly basis. All of which you have pretty much everything in common with. I wouldn't trade that for the world."
The only people I meet on a nightly basis are the people intent on rape, murder, and plague. Plaguing Gotham City with their disease of cowardice and desperation while turning it into blatant madness.
I have nothing in common with them.
I'd trade everything to change it.
"Though I admit, in these times, it does get harder. Crime, hatred, violence... It's all a shame, really, what's happened to this city.", I continue, looking out at the party. "You asked why I threw this event earlier, didn't you? Well, that's one of the other reasons."
I turn to her.
"Because I want to remind people that not everything in Gotham has to be riddled with negativity. That sometimes, one can have a little fun... even in a city like this."
I smile.
"That said, I'm sure it'll improve soon enough. Our police department grows even more advanced every day, so I'm told. I'm sure once they can get these... vigilantes, or whatever they are, off the streets along with the people that inspire them, Gotham can return to the city that I'm sure we all once knew."
It won't improve anytime soon. Not with the shape that the police department's in, currently. Corruption runs through it's heart... And it makes them even more dangerous to the people they're trying to help. Maybe one day, when they're taken down aswell as the people they claim to outlaw, Gotham can return to the city that I once knew. Maybe even then... I can return to the life I once knew.
Instead of hiding in the shadows, preying on criminals like a terrible phantom...
