I tap my finger on the desk and stare at the Newspaper in front of me.
Just what I need. No doubt ‘Batman’ will be on the trail of this guy. Or…not..he’s working an angle on Harvey Dent, that much is obvious from the thousands of notes and stickie notes blanketing my desk. I’ve been at this for hours, literally. I came directly here after my midnight meeting with the lord of darkness. It’s more than a little disconcerting that while I was going around stopping level 0 criminals Batman was taking out level 6 bad guys. I bring my hands to my face and silently scream into them.
I was
supposed to cut him down to size last night, but he knows
my identity. Not fair.
I push aside the newspaper, Milly had brought it in with her not half an hour ago. Flopping it on the desk in front of me waking me up from an unwanted cat nap. I sigh, mom had called soon after that mad that I hadn’t come home at all. I shuffle through the notes I’d collected. It’s not easy to explain to a button up old JSAer that some things are better handled at night.
I pull out a little piece of paper and read it the cryptic words standing out, each in different ink colors:
Batman
Harvey Dent
I twist my mouth and add another one:
Laughing man
Sticking it into my jeans pocket, thank goodness I had an extra change of clothes here, I look at my desk. Time to make something out of nothing. I start organizing.
Harvey Dent’s professional had been easy to track down, and I’m a little upset that I’d been given such a thankless job. A quick call down to legal records and a contact there had given me acres of information. Mobsters prosocuted most of them aquitted still, Mob Bosses in this town carry grudges and if Harvey got as close to them as some of the briefs suggest then they’d want him out of the picture. His childhood had been harder.
I look down at the legal pad filled with notes and sigh at the depressing tone. Normally a straight A student, bright and with a great future. He still had a slightly mean streak and it was not unusual for him to turn in a top ‘A’ school assignement and then turn in a smaller student to the nurse with top ‘A’ injuries.
I tap the file on the desk to even the papers out and then set it aside. The worn patina of the desk now visible.
“Are you leaving now?”
I look up to see Milly standing in the doorway.
I shake my head.
“Nope, it’s only 10 I’ve got the whole day.” I pick up the phone and dial GCPD.
Milly shakes her head.
“You’re mother wants you home. She’s called me twice in the last 20 minutes.”
I smile and put my feet on the desk as I answer her and the receptionist at the PD.
“Why do you think I had you hold my calls? Yes, Detective division.”
Milly rolled her eyes and left.
“Detective Divison, Bard.”
I sit up and my feet come down.
“Jason?!”
“The one and only. Heard about the Metropolis incident. Do all party’s you go to turn into villians and heroes?”
I smile into the phone.
“I wouldn’t wonder.” My smile falls as I remember Roy. Jason seems so bland compared to that.
“Maybe we should put the theory to the test.”
I raise my eyebrow.
“Have some inside info on a party?”
“That’ Dinah?” Slams voice is in the background.
“I do actually.”
“Dinah.”
I jumped a little at Slam’s voice.
“Don’t use the charm on the job blue bird.” Slam said to Jason whom I heard give a little laugh.
“I’ll see ya around Dinah.” followed by a slight click.
“No.”
“’No’ what?”
“You are not touching this case with a ten foot pole. Even if I had something to give you, which I can’t I wouldn’t allow it. This guy..”
I lean forward and scracth a few notes out.
“So you know who it is?”
“Certain aspects of this murder match a few of the other killings. His MO has taken a dangerous turn and I don’t want you mixed up in it.”
“Bradley, Bard get moving I want you – “ The phone died for a second as Slam but his hand over the end of it preventing me from hearing the rest of Loabs inevitable rant.
“I’ve got to go. Be safe and no.” The phone went click and I looked at it for a moment before hanging it up.
I lean back thinking.
If it was the same guy then all the killings would be linked. More than likely All the killings before were mob related, he was a button man most likely. The pay was never good in those outfits. I put my fingers to my forehead and massage. So, he got upset, killed the Mob Boss and stole the money?
Mobsters aren’t normally that easy to take out. Precautions are taken, but only the very wise Mobsters take precautions from their own. Sol was small-time compared to Falcone, and
that was saying something, but he ruled his territory and interests with an iron hand.
Falcone and all the other Mobsters would make a move for Sol’s territory and the mob lines would shift yet again. Like a huge game of chess. The trick is to stay three moves ahead.
I look at the clock 20 minutes till noon, grabbing my jacket I race out the door.
“I’ll be back later Milly. You can lock up when you leave.”
