does anyone kno who that mutant is in the beginning of the new issue? Yea the whole wolverine & sabretooth conversation caught me by surprise @ the end.
I thought it was Omega Red but somebody pointed out that he was in USM two issues ago. I think he's a mutant with a "death factor" like Omega or that kid Logan had to kill in that cave.
Ultimate X-men started off strong, but, like the original Uncanny title in the 60's, it feels they just let it fall to the wayside. Brian Vaughn's run reminds me of Roy Thomas' back in the mid to late 60's-- decent, but not memorable.
I can't believe it! I just read Ultimate X-men vol. 4 hardback and it sucked. It outright sucked. It's the first time ever Bendis made something that bored the crap outta me. Damn! What a waste of potential...
I'm digging the first Kirkman issue way more. Good stuff.
I miss Vaughn's run. Kirman's writing isn't all that bad (the dialoges are crappy), but Raney's pencils are terrible - I have a feeling that even I could draw better. I mean, all of his pictures look like they're behind a deformed glass... -_-

And in the case that Baby Jesus does not exist, Kirkman makes me cry.
What in Hell's name is so damn hard about writing intelligently? What's so hard about looking at older/previous issues of a book and getting a feel for how characters talk?
I miss Vaughan. Two issues in and I already miss Vaughan.
I don't truthfully mind Raney's pencils. They're a far cry from Immonen's, which is shock enough (possibly along the same shock that will happen in the Hitch-to-MAD! switch on The Ultimates), but they're not awful. They don't make my eyes bleed the way Bachalo does.
But the WRITING. Mein gott!
I knew something was wrong with the first issue, but I thought it was limited solely to Colossus. But Part 2 brought more out.
Colossus's dialogue is godawful. He talks like... like he did in the 90s cartoon, and that was the REAL Colossus. Ultimate Colossus lived in America for some time, and while he's surely had some Russian accent (never put into the dialogue), he's never talked like an utterly foreign person who's hardly familiar with - how do you say, English. And yet, we have: "You are not planning to return to the Mansion so soon, are you? The night is still young, yes?" - Have we EVER seen Colossus speak with this when written by Millar or Vaughan? Y'know, I almost wish Kirkman read these forums, and I'm going to pretend he does - HEY, KIRKMAN. Ever heard of contractions?
He even screwed up Wolverine's way of talking. ... Yeah. Does that require repeating? "Oh, yeah--the claws. Really, they're not that impressive. Besides, I brought my own." Part 2, of course. Oh, yeah--I can totally see Wolverine talking like that. Talk him down with cultured trash-talking, Wolvie! C'mon, guys. Seriously. Wouldn't "Yer claws? Sorry, bub, ain't impressed." followed by his charge have been more fitting, more in-character, and just right? Switch "your" for "yer," depending on writing style, or "pal" for "bub."
I already dislike his Cyclops. Not that Cyclops has ever -really- been written well by most writers (I remember liking Millar's, and I don't think I had some giant problem with Vaughan's, but I'd have to look back), but hell. Y'know what? Were I him, and I had (Slight spoilers, Date Night: Part 1)
Jean tell me that she'd read my mind, and that there were only -two- things that she'd not do, I'd sure cut the "I'm so repressed and shy!" crap reeeeeeallly quick
. Seriously.
Now, all that said, I'd feel awful not pointing out a few things I liked:
On the same vein of him screwing up dialogue, I actually like Nightcrawler's. Kirkman reflects his german accent in the writing, with the replacing of v's for w's (well, in some spots, at least). I'm not excellent about the basics of German, but I think he's screwed up in making "anyone" sound as "anyvaan." The language/accent doesn't replace the o sound with a v, does it? Like I said, could be wrong.
This is going to be marked as a spoiler, just in case. If you've not read Parts 1 & 2 and have a desire to not have the basic plot involving Xavier spoiled, don't read it.
His introduction of Lilandra and the Church of Shi'ar Enlightenment shows some small sign of promise, as does the dropkick at the end of the issue where she reveals that they worship The Phoenix as a god. Of course, this could, really, go any way. It could get really good (though I have my doubts), or could really, really suck. I think it really depends on how far Mr. Kirkman goes with it.
... Yeah, that's all I really liked.
I'll pick up the next issue, just to finish the arc. And then I very well may drop it, and just keep tabs on it either online or flip through it at my store. And that's messed up, because I didn't think I'd drop Ultimate X-Men anytime before I dropped the others.
Yes, I grasp that these are just his first issues, and so he's putting stuff in motion, and one cannot necessarily hope for everything to make sense right away. It's not what I'm saying. On an end note, two more possible spoilers:
1. Is this guy some type of sitcom/soap opera writer? Who okay'd his idea of presenting the possibility that Sabretooth is Wolverine's son (possibility in that it could always be a fake memory itself, or be retconned as such in the future)? And when we find that person, who wants in on the lynch mob? It's NOT a good idea, and comics do not equate to soap operas where the guy's sleeping with his mother's best friend's daughter.
2. I'm sure that Nightcrawler and Colossus will become the BEST of friends, but... why's he homophobic? You'd think that someone looking like him wouldn't exactly be condemning. In fact, isn't even the uber-churchy Nightcrawler of 616 not condemning of, say, Northstar?
Kirkman's run has already become my favourite in a long time. The characters are actually interacting with eachother on a personal level and we're learning more about them. That hasn't happened in a long time. Their interactions are realistic and varried per character. I like that we see all the many different types of personalities within the team. I am also happy that they're dealing with Colossus being gay and that Nightcrawler is not automatically okay with it. I would've been disappointed if it was just treated as a non-issue, as that would really downplay Peter's bravery for being 'out' among a group of teenagers.
Breaking everyone into groups of two was a really smart move and I am really enjoying the results.

No clues at all. Kirkman could have at least offered some type of foreshadowing.
We might even all be jumping the gun in assuming that it's a mutant with a death factor. It doesn't have to be. Kirkman could probably make the parents have died by any means. And didn't that kid with the death factor - the one who Wolverine had to kill - make his victims turn skeletal and then to dust? This kid's parents were still lifelike.
I live in fear of the unholy prospect that this character is some type of new, original character.
