Really? From the past few posts sounded like you were having a swell enough week.
up until about mid day yesterday i was, but then i kinda blew up in ways i can't discuss. but yeah, **** this week. last weekend? awesome. this week? **** it.

Ah well. There's always next week. Unless they plan to ship you off to Afghanistan or Bahrain or some such.

i think i might actually prefer that right now. but grass is always greener i guess. how has your week been?

It's been 3 years today since I joined the hype, it feels like forever.

Fighting "fires" mainly. Manufacturing is always like that. This month's a little tight because we're running on lean till Chinese New Year (nearly 70% of the staff is Chinese) so I'm pulling double-duties along with everyone else till the Year of the Dragon comes a knockin'.

Other than that, well, I come home. I sleep. I get up, go to work. Mundane start to the year. But after the triple crown of Arkham City-Skyrim-Unchartered I had in the last week of December I guess I shouldn't complain.

That's weird. I feel like I've been in the hype just as long. I joined up around the lead up to Infinite Crisis and that was about what...3 years ago?

How is it you guys have post counts in the 5-digit range?

I just post s***. lol

I started out in the Watchmen boards and then moved into the Community boards and the Misc Films board. Just last year I started going into the Batboards and everything people say about those boards were right.

Oh, they're a bloodthirsty bunch alright.

Pretty much the same as the DC Comics Forum on dccomics.com, the Bat-threads were pretty vicious.

I've been on vacation all week. I had to go to class last night, but otherwise things have been peachy for me. Plus my sister has cable, so I've been getting to watch Heat games again. Super-neato! :awesome:

But my weeks will start sucking again when I head home tomorrow, so don't get too jealous.

This Must be the Place Review
tumblr_lxe9w1mPbs1qjtjj7.jpg

This Must be the Place is a film directed and written by Paolo Sorrentino around the idea that Sean Penn would play the titular character, which is an wealthy middle-aged former rock star bored of his retirement days and takes on a Nazi hunting quest to avenge his father’s tormentor who is living as a refugee somewhere in the United States. Outrageously absurd concept or what? You bet! This comedic drama still succeeds to be hilarious, emotional and very up lifting at the end and Sean Penn gives a great performance as “Cheyenne” the protagonist.

There barely are any major supporting characters, mainly due to Cheyenne’s adventure across America which also becomes a soul searching adventure for him and his character progression, but the few notable ones would be Jane (portrayed Frances McDormand), Mordecai Middler the Nazi Hunter (Judd Hirsch) and Mary’s Mother played by Olwen Fouéré. The rest are rather side characters, but they’re pretty darn hilarious characters from a hardcore Christian woman who married a Nazi to David Byrne playing himself to some random guy playing Batman! Yeah, Batman makes a cameo here! Sadly he happens to be an overweight middle aged Texas cowboy ranger, but that’s still pretty darn awesome. Oh yeah and some random Indian man who needed a lift to the middle of the road so he could die in peace? Outrageous!

The filmography is visually pleasing, you got very wide shows of the environment and other locations, good cuts from scene to another and not even that many jump cuts at all from dialogue to another, I really enjoyed the way the movie was filmed. The music takes a good focus obviously and to me it was very pleasurable. David Byrne does an original song for the movie and the original soundtrack seemed fun enough to listen to.
The movie comes with a very heartwarming coming to full circle character conclusion for Cheynne that was very uplifting for me. So yeah, I’ll gladly recommend this movie to everyone, not just the Sean Penn fans, but fans of comedies and dramas in general. It’s absurd story concept seems silly, but this is really all about Sean Penn acting an over the top character and that’s pretty funny for me.
J. Edgar Review
tumblr_lxe5chNtDZ1qjtjj7.jpg

Clint Eastwood directs the film regarding J. Edgar Hoover, the man behind F.B.I and one of the most important men in American history. Portrayed by Leonardo Dicaprio, this is a biographical drama movie with a strong touch of romance onto it.

I will first say that I am a Leonardo Dicaprio fan and ever since hearing Eastwood doing this film with Dicaprio as lead, I really wanted him to get an Oscar out of this (as Oscars tend to love Eastwood) and I feel Dicaprio’s performance here was wonderful. He portrays Edgar as a passionate, compassionate, obsessed and utterly dedicated to his life protecting the United States from all possible threats.

The supporting cast resolves around Edgar’s Mother (played by Judi Dench), Helen Grady (Naomi Watts) and most importantly the partner, right man and lover of Edgar: Agent Clyde Tolson played by Armie Hammer. These characters make the movie and while Edgar’s Mother is only around 7 scenes the most on a 2 hour 20 minute movie, her roles are very important for the character story of J. Edgar and really mold on what kind of an man he becomes to the point he is fighting his inner feelings just to make sure he doesn’t disappoint his Mother.

What I found really great about the story telling format of the movie is that it’s incredibly non-linear, the movie jumps from scene to scene between timelines from 1920s to 1930s to 1970s to all kinds of different periods of Edgar’s life and it creates these great parallels; The subplots, the character stories and everything comes beautifully together and fills the gaps between the scenes wonderfully. It might get a tad bit confusing knowing exactly what year it might be, but that’s not truly important to the story to know what exact year it happens to be. The settings are wonderfully done, the buildings, the inside offices, the cars and the fancy suits and clubs, all beautifully set up. The makeup the cast members also use to show them as old and middle aged from scene to scene we’re incredibly well done too and detailed, you knew it was the same actors but you didn’t get the feeling it was so fake, the suspension of disbelief is there.
Ultimately, what sells this movie entirely to me is the romance plot, it’s just so incredibly powerful and sad too, especially how Edgar’s obsession to keep America save and his paranoia that there are communist enemies all over the United States truly stop him from having a happy life, his constant emotional struggle to never admit his love to Agent Tolson. Eastwood adds this powerful violin song to all important emotional scenes, Dicaprio and Hammer truly sell themselves as great lovers, so it’s no surprise their big admittance of love in a feisty hotel room struggle was my favorite. I mean, how you would feel if you lived in a time where homosexuality and Tran sexuality is frowned upon and not even your own Mother would support it. Edgar’s life was pure hell on an emotional level.

I will say that this movie might be a tad bit long, it’s just that it has that usual Eastwood filming of scenery that really don’t need to be that long nor have that much focus on to begin with, but the movie does close nicely with a good ending in my views.
So yeah, I cried a lot during the movie, but I can easily recommend this movie to everyone. It gives you a good look on America’s history and you can learn about people such as J. Edgar Hoover, Melvin Purvis, John Dillinger, the Lindbergh Kidnapping and all the nasty stuff Edgar did to keep his position among others. I enjoy learning history in a movie; I feel that’s always an added bonus.

Kind of hard to believe that I was one of those, "Yeah, I'll probably never go digital with music" people a few years back. The last physical CDs I bought was a Greatest Hits release for Blondie and Joan Jett at a Sam Goody Buy 1, Get One Free Sale. The rest for pretty much the last year or two have been digital downloads, mainly from Amazon. A lot of it is because they are just giving that **** away it seems like, having all of these $5 and one-day $2-4 sales on relatively new albums. I'm not sure if I'll even switch over completely for other stuff, such as comics, books, movies and TV shows, but I think I'm slowly but surely become a digital-only type of person for music.

By the way, did anyone end up picking up one those Kindle Fires? I was thinking about buying one, but I mainly want to get it for reading (mp3s and videos aren't a big thing for it for me), so I'm not sure if it's worth it in the end, and may just get a Touch or even a regular Kindle since they're so cheap now. But I do have some interest in the Comics and such, too, which I think is only available on the Fire for the foreseeable future.

I bought one for my sister and it seems pretty good. She also uses it mostly for reading so it works for that. I've used Netflix on it and it works. I used Amazon Prime to watch videos, it works. The only drawbacks to it would be the sluggish web browsing and the lack of apps.

Hm, I'm not too concerned about apps. The only one I definitely want is this one app I saw someone with an iPad have, where it's like a Word document and you could get one of those electronic pens to write on it. Seems like it'd make note-taking for class easier, and in general just make things more convenient and less paper wasting for writing personally, like I sometimes do.

Well, that and Fruit Ninja. Got to have my ****ing Fruit Ninja, goddammit.

Yeah there's an app for that for Kindle Fire, Evernote I think its called.

So last night was pretty fabulous

Went out for dinner with the girlfriend and ate a ridiculous amount of sushi which was really fun and we ran into a few old friends and chatted about times

Then it was back home for a quick change into our costumes for a superhero theme night. We went as Eclipso and Mary Marvel and with the power of Eclipso's magics and a lot of skintight black latex set out to seduce beautiful superheroines to the lesbian side :awesome:

I met a super cute Terra cosplayer who I wound up doing the Time Warp with. Do not do the time warp while very drunk your body will look ridiculous

And I also ran into a very gorgeous Batwoman cosplayer who actually had one of Kate's tatoos. Where she had it and how i know she had it there are secrets I shall take to my grave

Finally at about four in the morning the sapphic superheroines returned home though I can't actually remember how I got there. I think my girlfriend might have carried me :wow:

Wish I could start a cultural colloquialism.

Give it time 'Nubsy one day you shall :)

I'm determined to see J. Edgar when it comes out over here

Everybody needs to have some Fruit Ninja in their life

I really want to see J. Edgar. It's gonna be weird seeing DiCaprio play him, though. Does anyone else still see Luke from Growing Pains for like the first ten minutes of all his film appearances?

Show me that smile again.

I expect the usual Leonardo Dicaprio mental breakdown in every Leonardo Dicaprio movie. Dicaprio has paranoid freakout on tap
