Nothing Ultimates ever works because we're always comparing it to 616. I'm as guilty of this as any other reader. Truth is, if only new readers read Ultimate stuff and ONLY Ultimate stuff, they might find it more to their liking.
That said, Grand Theft America was utter garbage.
IGrand Theft America was pretty awesome and right now Millar is bringing back the super soldier race with Russia and China. Not to mention can anyone match the coolness factor of having Punisher, Hawkeye AND Blade in the same team?
Nextwave was awesome, but it really had no place being brought into 616 continuity. People like Photon, Boomer, and Machine Man were previously established characters, and Ellis' characterizations of them were as inaccurate as they were hilarious. Ellis knew he was writing them wrong for the sake of comedy, which was why he intended for the comic to take place in its own universe. Subsequent writers, however...
That **** is why I wish he'd gotten away with actually using Tony Stark and Nick Fury, as he originally wanted to, because that would have made NEXTWAVE impossible to shoehorn into the main universe.
as a fan of hawkeye, it's embarrassing that he can be mentioned in the same breath as the punisher or blade. the latter two go together like peas and carrots, when done right they're both merciless killers...that is in no way hawkeye. hawkeye is a superhero
that's one of the selling pointsWhen he's not making lousy choices in life. Which he does. A lot. Ungracefully
Dirk Anger is so much cooler than Nick Fury.
Yeah but if Ellis had his way, Dirk Anger would have been Nick Fury, doing all the same totally great stuff that Dirk Anger did, while ALSO establishing that this is an alternate universe story in a way that other writers might actually feel obligated to respect.
Okay, I do realize that it's probably not as if they have a whole lot of depictions of hardcore drug abuse in comics to choose from, but...first Cry For Justice gets an Eisner nom, now this? Who's been passing out cheat codes for the Matrix?
