Nothing Ultimates ever works because we're always comparing it to 616. I'm as guilty of this as any other reader. Truth is, if only new readers read Ultimate stuff and ONLY Ultimate stuff, they might find it more to their liking.

That said, Grand Theft America was utter garbage.

I enjoy both universes and i enjoy the different takes. Comparing elseworlds to mainstream is just plain silly and pointless to begin with, because anyone can easily admit that stuff like Jonathan Hickman's Thor is right up there with JMS and Gillen by the sheer quality of characters and quality, sure some aspects are done better than others such as Captain America in Ultimate. Honestly when do you see mainstream Cap visiting Afghanistan soldiers for Thanks Giving Turkey or other special events? Only time ever Cap has done anything nice was when Millar wrote the mainstream Cap.

Grand Theft America was pretty awesome and right now Millar is bringing back the super soldier race with Russia and China. Not to mention can anyone match the coolness factor of having Punisher, Hawkeye AND Blade in the same team?

Nextwave was awesome, but it really had no place being brought into 616 continuity. People like Photon, Boomer, and Machine Man were previously established characters, and Ellis' characterizations of them were as inaccurate as they were hilarious. Ellis knew he was writing them wrong for the sake of comedy, which was why he intended for the comic to take place in its own universe. Subsequent writers, however...

That **** is why I wish he'd gotten away with actually using Tony Stark and Nick Fury, as he originally wanted to, because that would have made NEXTWAVE impossible to shoehorn into the main universe.

I love how Immonen got away with drawing Dirk Anger smoking a cigar for the first couple of issues before Quesada noticed and made them chewable boom sticks.

Dirk Anger is so much cooler than Nick Fury.

Yeah but if Ellis had his way, Dirk Anger would have been Nick Fury, doing all the same totally great stuff that Dirk Anger did, while ALSO establishing that this is an alternate universe story in a way that other writers might actually feel obligated to respect.

The only things that would change would be the character's name and visual, although in fairness "Dirk Anger" does just... work better, somehow, than Nick Fury.

Wouldn't happen because Fury's way too big of a deal to pull that **** on. The Nextwave characterizations got grafted on because it's easy for some chucklehead writer to go HURP DURP WHO CARES ABOUT MACHINE MAN / PHOTON / ELSA BLOODSTONE whereas Nick Fury actually matters to enough people that turning him into a psychotic suicidal junkie wouldn't ever fly.

Not to say that people don't do a ****** job with the character but someone like Brian Bendis is emphatically going to portray Brian Bendis's ****** version of Nick Fury rather than going along with anything that anyone else gives a **** about.

And I mean same deal for Tony Stark, Warren Ellis's using Tony as an outright villain wouldn't have meant **** because we were dead in the middle of Millar using Tony as Fascist Psycho But Actually, We Are Supposed To Root For Him and he wasn't about to derail that derailment for Nextwave or any other kind of damn wave.

I've just enjoyed over the top parodies of Nick Fury (Dirk Anger, Samuel L. Jackson, Hunter Gathers) to the actual Nick Fury.
