Here is my review of Transformers that I posted on my MySpace.

Transformers
Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Jon Voight, Hugo Weaving, and Peter Cullen
Directed by Michael Bay
Star System: ***** 5 Stars
Running Time: 2 hours and 20 minutes

Where to begin? I grew up on many cartoons that I remember watching when I was a kid. Everything from GI Joe, He-Man, Centurions, Thundarr The Barbarian, Thundercats, Bravestarr, The Galaxy Rangers, Voltron, Defenders of the Earth, Superted, Silverhawks, Tiger Sharks, Filmmations The Real Ghostbusters, and of course The Transformers as well. I remember wishing as a kid that one day they would make a live action Transformers film, even though the concept of it is very difficult to portray faithfully.

When I heard they were making a Transformers film I became really excited and waited with anticipation to see my childhood obsession on the big screen. Hearing the news of Michael Bay directing it made me happier because seeing the Transformers in big action set pieces peaked my interest even more. Then came the designs for Ironhide, Megatron, Starscream, Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and the lack of interest that Bay showed towards the source material of the Transformers. I will be the first to admit that I was not happy upon him and Steven Spielberg(the producer of the project) saying they will concentrate on the human perspective rather than the robots themselves.

As a fan of the Transformers I feel they can carry a movie on their own with little to no human interaction. It's not difficult to portray them in such a fashion that A) the audience can still connect with them, B) They can still be emotional characters, and C) that no matter what happens The Transformers experience hardships that are very similar to what we experience as human beings. So with that said, my expectations were somewhat lowered because I know Bay doesn't focus on character development too much.

Sadly it's pretty evident that he doesn't really focus on the robots when he should. When they're on screen they look amazing, realistic, and have great personality that are either somewhat faithful or very faithful to their cartoon/comic book counterpart. I hope they improve on that aspect for the sequel and actually focus on the development that is necessary for both the Autobots and Decepticons.

As a whole though? The film is great. The action is amazing, the visuals for both the Autobots and the Decepticons are a beauty to behold. This HAS to be the favorite to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects because those were not easy to pull off and they pulled it amazingly. Watching the Transformers go into action blowing **** up made me feel like a kid again and I was just sitting there with my jaw lowered to the ground. I was that impressed and happy with the effects. The beginning alone with Blackout attacking the Military Base is a Transformers fan dream come true. Hearing the classic Transformers sound with Blackout blowing everything up in sight was just wow. Words cannot express how brutal, amazing, and realistic it looked when he was just owning everything that moved or wasn't moving.

There is a lot of humor in the film. Some of it works, some of it feels forced, and at other times you're thinking to yourself "was that necessary?" But it doesn't detract from the film itself and before you know it you're sucked back in with some mind blowing action visual effects. There is an hysterical scene that involves Bumblebee and relieving himself on a federal agent, there is a funny scene when Jazz(an autobot) introduces himself to Sam and his female friend, and Frenzy(the infiltrating Decepticon) was amusing in some of his scenes as well. I don't mind humor every now and again, yet I hope that with the sequel they make it darker and make it more epic.

When the Autobots come together after they find forms to disguise themselves in I got a little teary eyed. I won't lie, I choked up somewhat because I felt like a giddy little fanboy watching them on the big screen. Anyone who grew up with these cartoons knows that there's nothing wrong with feeling like a kid again. I'm 25 years old and I was obsessed with the Transformers. I had all of the toys, I have the 1986 animated film, have quite a few of the old cartoons in my video cassette case, and read quite a few of the comics as well.

The Deceptions could've used more development. They just didn't seem like they were a huge threat and that's where the "focusing on the human perspective" takes away important screen time from them. You needed to show them working as somewhat of a unit and show more of the hatred/jealousy that Starscream has for Megatron. They hint at it when Megatron says "You failed me once again Starscream", but that's it, you know? There's nothing to indicate that they were/are a congregation of bad ass evil robots wanting to destroy the world and take over the universe. Hopefully that is something that is fixed with the eventual sequel.

The action? Wow. There's plenty of it. My favorite action sequences has to be the beginning with Blackout destroying the military base, Scorponok attacking the soldiers in the desert, Prime and Bonecrusher fighting the freeway, Starscream taking out fighter jets while flying in the city, and the Decepticons/Autobots final battle in the city as well. Everything about it was pure Michael Bay and it just brought out the kid in me because it was so epic, so realistic, and just wow. I cannot stress how frenetic the action is and yet you never feel cheated out of anything despite how fast it goes.

The end hints at a sequel with Prime calling for the other Autobots in space to come to Earth and join them as guardians of humanity. I can only hope that they take it in a darker direction and have the Decepticons hear that message and provide a surprise ambush attack on Earth leaving no one except the Autobots, Sam, and the Decepticons. That's the direction it needs go I feel and it will be for the better if they do it that way.

As a whole the film was great. I loved every minute of it and I will more than likely see it again if the time allows me to do so. I recommend it to anyone who wants to see it in hopes of experiencing a great fun time with great visuals and great action. This is, in my opinion, Michael Bay's best film and hopefully he improves on the flaws that were evident in the film. It's time to focus more on the alien robots for the sequel than it is to showcase what humanity thinks of them.

No, I didn't break down and cry or anything. But as I said, seeing the Transformers on the big screen in live action format was pure bliss for yours truly. It's hard to explain because I grew up with the toys, the cartoons, and everything that was Transformers related(except for Beast Wars and Armada). However, when push comes to shove I can only this means a faithful Thundercats, GI Joe, and Voltron film will be made in the near future.

Optimus shows up like 10 minutes into the final fight? Where the fudge was he?
Remember, when OP and BC fall to the other highway, and OP kill BC...Maybe just maybe...he didnt know where the other autobots went. So, he went around downtown to look for them until finally he showed up. LOL
OP was stopped by the highway patrol for speeding, underwent a sobriety test and was given a ticket.

How would that work? You mean destroy all the humans except for Sam?

How would that work? You mean destroy all the humans except for Sam?

Well I'm guessing that Sam would be taking refuge with the Transformers in some kind of shelter. It's a theory that I was thinking about, but now that you mention it, you bring up a valid question because it would be kind of difficult.

I'm just hoping that for the sequel they'll focus more on the robots and give them emotional depth and character development.

If it's Bay again, they won't.

This isn't a knock, but the guy doesn't have his heart in depth.

Well he showed some depth with Armageddon(the ending). But in a sense you're right. I wouldn't mind Bay directing again but there HAS to be someone who get great emotional drama and darkness into the story, you know?

I'm guessing a better writer who understands the concept will help in that particular area. Maybe Spielberg should direct this time around? :cwink: To be honest I was hoping James Cameron would've directed Transformers.

i enjoyed this movie

however this is my brother's review( kinda)

In the "enhanced words of Team America, "Why the **** does Michael Bay keep making movies"!!!!!!!?"

Yes, that's right!! I saw Transformers and it sucked!!!.

Now, don't get me wrong, it had its moments, and it was going somewhere. But like all Michael Bay movies, it ends up in the chaotic ****ter!!!!

Warning! Spoilers!! If you should decide to watch that dumb**** of a movie!!

First off, where the hell does Michael get the idea that Megatron should only be in the film for like ****in' 20 minutes. HE'S ****ING MEGATRON!!!! And how does Megatron know English!? Optimus Prime said that he learned English off the World Wide Web and Megatron crashed in 10,000 B.C., I didn't know English or the World Wide Web existed back then? Oh wait, THEY DIDN'T!!!

And about Optimus Prime...WHAT THE **** MICHAEL BAY?!! Why does Prime's dialogue almost always seem over the top!? Whatever I was listening to him, I thought he was the ****in' announcer guy off those damn anime ads on toonami!!! Oh wait, that was the announcer guy off Toonami!! Peter Cullen, right?! **** him!! No, wait, wait, don't totally **** him! He had his moments in the movie!! But who the hell was the acting supervisor?! The one from 300??!! Yeah, I said it, **** you!!!

And what about the rest of the transformers!!? Where were they?!! Sure, they were shooting at each other, but when they were, I couldn't care less what happened to them!!

The Autobots? Ha! **** them!! They're the Autobots, so we should just automatically go 'Heil Autobots'! They didn't need emotional depth, some characterization, a little interaction to at least tell me they really are the good guys!! Hell, they could have been playing good cop, bad cop, but the good cop really is another bad cop and the other bad cop is just to ****in' ******ed to say anything!! "Yeah, let's not harm the humans...yet"

And the Decepticons? **** them too!! Who the hell were they anyway?! Seriously, WHO THE HELL WERE THEY!!!!? It's like Michael Bay gets 75% of the way through the film and decides, "****!! There were Decepticons!!? They seem important...so let's put them in!". If the Autobots were characterization-lite to the near max, then the Decepticons were characterization-null!!! There characters were so much cooler than the Autobots, but not only does Bay not give them more screen time, he ****in' clubs them like baby seals!! TOO ****ING EASY!! And then the only one left is Starscream and he just flies off into space, probably going, "Goddamn you Michael Bay for creating this movie with sequels in mind rather than focus on the movie itself...BASTARD!!!!!!!!!".

And now we get to the ****in' humans! Seriously, Optimus Prime should have just said **** 'em! **** THEM!!

Shia LaBeouf seriously overrates himself!! On E! he's like, "When we saw the trailer for Superman Returns, we wanted Superman, not some lovee-dovee movie" Shia...**** you! That movie was boring, dragged on, and didn't have enough action in it, and it was still better than you and that ****ty movie you starred in!! I felt like throwing my ****in' cellphone at the projector and hope the electrical interaction would fry the movie so I wouldn't have to hear your ****in' voice every time some bad **** started happening and you just ran your mouth in overdrive!! **** you!

And Megan Fox? Wow Michael, wow! Congratulations, You just pulled off the Fantastic Four move and got it half right! You got someone who was actually pretty to play the role(**** you Jessica Alba, you talentless, narcissist *****!), but you forgot to make sure that ****in' pretty someone could voice her ****in' lines right for five seconds without bending over to the camera. I don't care if she's hot, if I wanted to see hot, I got my porno collection! I want to actually see a movie where there's some decent ****in' acting!! It's a ****in' movie! Not a promo!

And speaking of promos. Congratulations Michael for once again making us realize that movies now a days are really just very extended ads. Chevy, Hummer, Dance Dance Revolution, World Wide Web, Ebay!!? GOD ****ING DAMN YOU!!!

And then there's that final battle scene in...in...what city was it? Los Angeles? Thank you Wikipedia, I could never have found it in the movie? Or was it really in Los Angeles...oh, the filming took place in Los Angeles. Then where was the city...Mission City? Where the hell is that?

Anyway, I had no ****ing clue what the hell was going on in that battle! Some scenes with the Transformers felt too short! Oh wait yet again, all the the scenes of the Transformers felt way too short! Guess we gotta make room for more of Megan Fox...*****!! And then there were those military guys that I thought had there moment in the shoot out at the Arabian city (One of the few sweet moments in that movie), but I guess they're our only hope...or something...I still don't get just how the **** they go from having a shootout with a robot in Qatar, to being in a shootout in "Mission City" as if they are the only soldiers on the entire planet who can stop the Decepticons.

And where the **** was everybody else?! At the end, when everything was done, everyone started acting like nothing happened! What the ****!? You're telling me that an entire city was under attack, F-22's were ripped off the sky, an entire military base was destroyed, comets falling out of the sky, and you're telling me that no one ****in' noticed that?!! Oh wait, that's right, Bush was the president in that movie, he's too stupid to notice anything! Probably him and Cheney blamed it on Iran and finally started that war they've been jackin' off too in his dreams!!

And then there's the story. What ****in' story?!! What? Really? They're really was one?! I thought I was watching a rip-off of Independence Day! Oh don't tell me you guys weren't thinking the same thing when Jon Voight went, "And you didn't bother to tell the military about this alien threat?" and the guy next to him replies, "We didn't deem it to be a credible national security threat". COME ON!!

And before I end this. Was it just me, or was this movie asking me to love it? All those slower scenes, like when in the city, after Starscream bombs them and everyone is trying to get up and Shia and Megan reach for each other; and that scene where Megan seems to be all stress out in the car and then all of a sudden gets the courage to step on the gas, felt too clichéd as if Bay was saying "Hey! There's that kind of scene! Love Me!!" **** you! If I want to love your movie, your movie better prove to me that it's a damn good movie first.

From the inspiration of the South Park two-parter, Cartoon Wars, I end with this. If I ever get into the movie industry and someone comes up to me and says "Hey, are you trying to be like Michael Bay?", I'll reply, angrily and insulted, "No! Don't you ever try to compare me to that ego-centric *******! When I make my movies, they have well-thought out plots with well-developed characters, and action that makes sense and is relevant to the overall plot! Not chaotic storylines with CGI-stuffed violence just because you think it's cool when it's not!!"

Tee-hee,
Nader
:heart::heart::heart::heart::heart:

And I actually agree.

Back when Bay was set as director I was one of the negatrons as you people called us. I called bay some names, I thought this movie would be bad. Heck I even read the script and it was trash. But the movie... it...it...was awesome. Best movie I have seen all year. I got to hand it to Bay. Job well done. I had had only one problem with it and it was the errors they had in the scene with the donuts. That was all everything else was awesome.

You're not in the minority. It's a highly well-reviewed film, on the top 100 sci-fi flicks at RT, and one of Spielberg's most earnest efforts. "Cerebral masterpiece" is subjective... and IMO Darthphere should forfeit his bet winnings from Ragdus for even calling out my quote the way he did especially since what I meant- in context- is obvious. It's not like I said "Cerebral masterpiece like 2001, and CATWOMAN." Anybody agree?

You're just jealous I'm getting $100 and you're not.:o

How would that work? You mean destroy all the humans except for Sam?
You Forgot He-Man and The Masters Of The Universe too. I think Megatron fliping the defensless human was terrible but i laughed my but off. I can see you would prefer mored estruction but there was enough mayhem. But glad funny stuff like Megatron doing that was kept in.

Someone has anger issues. We get you didn't like the film move on please and think happy thaughts.
Don't care what you say its Bays best film. Sorry you didn't like it but i thaught Shia, Megan and Bumblebee moments was the better parts of the movie.
Come on with her driving skills they together took out that big Tank Decepticon that was cool.
BW.

I hope for the sequel they get better music. The Disturbed song "In This Moment" fits the Transformers perfectly. I sincerely believe that for the sequel they need to use Lion's "Transformers" theme.

Yes, it's cheesy, but damn that song still holds up to this very day in my opinion.

Click on my sig vid

They could have still played it during the end credits. It wouldn't have hurt anything and so many people would have loved it (and hated it...but who cares).

Something seems inherently contradictory to me about showing depth at the end of a film.

Don't get me wrong there wasn't any depth through the whole film. It seems waited till the very end to show any kind of emotional drama. I realize that with Bay we won't get the emotional depth we're hoping for.

@Nosebleed- That video gives me chills. That introduction alone made me love the film even more and pumped me up. That song is just classic no matter what anyone says.

Would've been perfect after they used it after showing Starscream heading into space.

I think Kronos should score any sequel. The Requiem For A Dream soundtrack was, as kids say today, tha shizzy.

Edited for clarity: Clint Mansell & Kronos

@Nosebleed- Did you make that video? Very impressive.  I was hoping they would've used it either at the beginning or at the end of the film.

Nope, those are the opening credits for the 86 film.

It's been a while since I've watched the 86 film. But as I said, that introduction alone just gives the ultimate "HELL YEAH!" feeling. It's a shame that so many people are against using Lion's theme for the Transformers live action film.

Hell, even The Hills Have Eyes 2 had an 80's sounding rock song during the end credits. I'm sorry Bay, but the Mutemath song sucked. It sucked horribly. It sucked worse than Gigli and I'd rather watch Gigli a million times than listen to that atrocity ever again.

Lion's theme NEEDS to be used. That's all there is to it.

9/10

It was without question the BEST movie experience i've had this summer.

In the beginning, I thought the pacing was kinda slow and I found the humor to be laid on a lil' too thick...but as the movie went on and we got deeper into the story, everything began to click for me...the humor no longer felt forced and I was engaged throughout...

I LOVED how they introduced the Autobots to the audience...it was perfect and OP transformation in front of Mikela and Sam was EPIC.

The fight scenes were :wow:...I was on the edge of my seat throughout. They were all full of tension and suspense.

The humor by the Autobots, something I was originally worried about, came off rather well. My favorite scene was when Sparkplug is looking out Sam's window and the Autobots are all hiding with OP leaning against the house. :oldrazz:

Shia was good, you really got a sense of friendship between him and Bumblebee.

But by far, my most favorite aspect of the movie was how they built up Megatron to be such a bad a$$...

Even though you don't see him for most of the movie, you just knew that when he woke up...it was gonna get nasty. I loved how the autobots would take on the other decepticons and yet fallback and regroup once they realized that Megatron had entered the fight. What he did to Jazz was a real, "Oh s***!!!" for me and the audience...after that and as the Autobots were losing you can just feel the tension in the crowd...I myself was wonderin in my head, "Where the hell is Optimus?!?!?!"...then when he rolls up in the alley...:woot:

Can't wait to see it again.

I'll give my full review in the morning, but I'll just say this much: this movie single-handedly turned me into what some might call an Optimist Prime. This took SM3 out to pasture and raped it silly. I might just go to see it again if the opportunity arises.

Really, that whole ending just blew me to bits. Linkin Park FTW.

Oh I saw you say this is better then Spider-Man 3, POTC and 300...okay so would you say it is the best movie you have seen this year?

I'm not who you were talking to, and it's probably about 50 pages too late, but YES, a resounding yes, this is the best movie I have seen this year!

This movie doesn't touch 300 with a 300 foot pole.
