The Villains Problem

The best villain so far this year is Logan's own mortality and being on borrowed time.

Spader did a fantastic job as Ultron (arguably saved what would be a forgettable character) but Whedon basically treated the character like a Pixar villain. I know these are superhero movies, but my expectations for writing are a bit higher than Saturday morning cartoons.

Yep. Spader can't help it that he was cast as a neutered, useless version of Ultron that at no point ever felt like a real threat.

How ironic is that people chant the "MCU villain problem" and for the second year in the row the best cb villain will likely be a MCU one. It's really aan egg in the face. I dare DC fans to mock MCU villains again. I have a whole lot of Joker, Enchantress and Luthor gifs coming for them...

What's funny is that SS Joker, Enchantress and Luthor turned out to be better than Ares, Ludendorf and Maru, even though WW is a far, far, far, far superior movie to the other DCEU films.

Probably the best DCEU villain was Zod, and I didn't really like him that much either.

I was really hyped about Ultron as a villain but it was kind of a let down for me. They basically took him and made a mirror image of Tony Stark but only evil. The constant joking threw me out of it sometimes. He wasn't a bad villain for sure, he was decent one in my book...

Hela is gonna crush and most likely become the best Marvel villain yet.

Ultron is one of my biggest disappointments with a villain. He had huge potential.

This is Ultron

This is how the trailer made Ultron look menacing

I think Ultron would have been fine if Whedon didn't blow the final battle. The snarky Spader version made sense as the progeny of Stark, and I enjoyed his interaction with the twins, Dr. Cho and his end (SPOILER ALERT!) with the Vision. What we missed was a rousing final battle with an unstoppable monster, not a well choreographed tussle with dozens of tissue bots. I wanted to see something like this:

or a small group of specialized Ultrons trashing Earth's Mightiest Heroes before a last second strategem ultimately defeated the undefeatable. Ah well, maybe we'll see an improved version in a Guardians sequel.

Talking about "villains problem".
Lex Luthor in BvS was just appalling. Talk about a problem. I don't know what the hell was he doing or thinking of but every time he showed up just made me despair. In my eyes he completely botched that character and made the movie sink even more. He overcooked his performance so much.

A lot of comic book movies have weak and just plain bad villains and this includes several studios.

Regarding Ultron I think Whedon should have had the vibranium body be more of a focus in the battle to separate the finale more from the first Avengers. I don't think Ultron isn't a threat, given what he's seconds away from achieving, but he could have been more of a fighting presence to boot to double up on it. Certainly room for improvement there.

Other than that I think Ultron as a character is great. Very unique for a killer robot and there's really no other super villain that captures me as much when he's speaking as Spader manages to do with his performance.

To me one can compare Ultron and Apocalypse and see how much character vs threat means. When I first got AoU at home I was just going to watch the scene where Ultron gets created but ended up sitting up late on a work night just to see "one more scene" with him. Apocalypse was more of a personal threat than Ultron, but he was such a bad character that I would probably fast forward through some of his scenes if I watched that movie again.

Speaking as a big fan of the MCU, the only villain I'd call intimidating was the Winter Soldier.

Have to disagree, Zod was much more intimidating. As was Faora. Even Doomsday was more scary than Ultron if we are just talking intimidation alone.

Oh please. Right when we saw Doomsday everyone with a fully functioning brain (re: not Superman or Batman apparently) knew that he'd be killed with the spear. There's nothing intimidating about that, particularly when he looks like every other generic monster we've seen in the past decade, just with considerably worse CG.

I thought that this was the project and villain that Joss had been waiting all his life for. Can't believe how it turned out after all that build up.

Especially after watching him kill Tony's parents.

I will say, it was kind of scary when Stane paralyzed Tony and took the arc reactor out of his chest.

The MCU's best villains tend to be the non-flashy ones.

Stane, Pierce, Zemo. I'd say those have been the best thus far.

I despise Bane in TDKR so let's not mention him!

Why exactly? He was a welcome change of pace after having spent so long being portrayed as the Rhino of Batman's rogue gallery by the Arkham Games and the DCAU
