Does Marvel have a problem with their villains?

You don't say...?

Am I wrong in thinking that the "Mandarin" was one of the main reasons this thread was made in the first place?

Even MCU fanatics hated it which caused tension.

I'm not a MCU fanatic by any stretch of the imagination :funny:, but I loved how the Mandarin tied into the theme of Tony's PTSD and came across as a more legitimate threat than Thanos/Loki and their Chitauri, Stane, Whiplash and his businessman sponsor, Malekith, Ronan etc.

For me its that thematic touch of the Mandarin being an Earthling, yet also the greatest threat to Tony's person in a movie where Tony's freaking out about alines, combined with the extent of the Mandarin's reach that made him a great villain for me.

Best Marvel villains were not done by MCU. Magneto and Doc Ock.

True. But the worst villains weren't done by the MCU either.

Malekith probably doesn't even make the top ten worst Marvel villains on film, even if you restrict it to 2000 onwards. Fox and Sony had some truly horrendous villains.

I can suffer a Malekith once and a while if it means avoiding the Electros and Dr. Dooms.

Nuada from Hellboy II is a similar character done much better. Malekith's personality and mannerisms are just too generic and dull.

With more to do Malekith would have been on Nuada's level for me in terms of character and presence. They just left too little in the movie. Nuada is one of the most underrated villains I know though. I hold him higher than a whole lot of other super villains, not least because Luke Goss is a really good movie martial artist (probably the best in that department out of all super villain actors, unless I'm just forgetting someone).

I applaud you for the way you view movie version of Aldrich Killian, I think he's awesome.

I can deal with Electro misfires, Sandman misfires, Mandarin misfires, Whiplash misfires and Malekith or even Ronan misfires. But for Christ's sake..........you don't screw up Marvel's most premiere villain 3 times.

3 times?

How the hell does that happen? If it were a Family Feud question for Marvel Villains Doom would be number one. That is by far the most disappointing villain and the people responsible should be put in front of a firing squad.

Killian reminds me of some late 80s/early 90s action movie villain, except with superpowers. He's alright, but he's pretty generic in terms of character. However, I do like his evil plan to set up his own Super Terrorist and use him to put his own man in the White House, thus controlling both sides of the War of Terror which he could then profit from by selling weapons and technology to the US Government to fight said terrorist. I thought that was very clever and made up a bit for his generic personality.

iron Man 3 is probably my choice for most underrated MCU film. I think it was significant improvement over IM2.

I think its pretty strong as far as third entries in the superhero genre go. The thing that keeps it above IM, for me, is the third act. IM had a fantastic first and second act, but I lost interest once Bridges' Stane donned his Iron Monger suit.

Its that 80's/early 90's action movie touch that I think puts the movie above the rest of Marvel's theatrical entries. Plus my sides went into orbit when the guy making all the terrorist threats was shown to be a has been surrounded by hookers and coke.

Agreed.

All this talk of Marvel having a villain problem and some of the worst villains to come out in recent years have emerged from the other studios. Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor, Enchantress, Electro and Trash Test Doomy are some of the worst onscreen villains yet. Marvel major problems are that their villains are for the most part just forgettable. Imo, the villain problem isn't just a Marvel problem, its a comic book movie problem. The ratio between good and bad antagonist heavily slants to bad, with the good ones being more the exception. Heck, the ratio between good and bad comicbook movies also leans on the bad, so its pretty impressive the only major recurring problem from MS films is the villains.

Agreed those other villains much worse than Marvel's but problem with Marvel is they able to make great movies and great heroes but never do great villains except once with Loki.

For me Nuada and Nomak are 2 of the most under rated CBM villains out there, and both were played by Goss.

Will never forget that final fight from Blade II watching it in the cinema, I genuinely though Blade was going to lose that fight first time I watched it. I wish Marvel could do something like that with their villains but I never fear the hero not winning.

If people can praise Killian then Zemo should get his due as well. He was the master mind behind the Avengers spliting up and it was done in a much better way than whatever Lex was doing with Batman and Superman.

You can add me to the list of Killian's fans. He probably has the smartest plan out of any MCU villain.

Yes, he did great in both roles. I don't know if I thought Blade was losing in the fight but it was very entertaining.

Nomak was great. Him and Deacon Frost were great villains.

Agreed, both very under-rated

Oh I remember thinking in the cinema in 2002 'how is Blade going to win this' and then 'OMG he isn't!' In the cinema quite clearly. That whole fight had my jaw on the floor and has rarely if at all been bettered since IMO.

Lex had a respectable body count and the daddy is God/daddy beat me thing that made him a good villain. Less Ridderlite would've been nice when it came to his interactions with Finch, Clark, and Bruce.

Nuada's also one of my favorite villains. Same for 1990 Shredder - building an army of homeless kids was evil brilliance. The minute the cops try to bust one of your operations and open fire, the media sees them shooting kids and turns against them.

He's done worse on accident though. Also it was a joke, not meant to be taken seriously.
