VR game in development for Xbox One

New VR game based on an "established, long-running franchise."

Rumor-VR-Game-Dev-Xbox-One.jpg

A well-known European studio is planning “a new VR game” set in the universe of an “established, long-running franchise,” and it’s in development for a PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One release in 2017, according to an Ars Technica report. The website says it will be announced at E3 next month and feature the word “VR” in the title.

This information comes via pre-E3 planning sent to Ars Technica and was confirmed by the studio’s public relations representative.

The news here, of course, is that a virtual reality game is planned for release on Xbox One, lending further credence to rumors earlier this week that Microsoft plans to release a virtual reality-compatible Xbox One in late 2017, that it also plans on announcing at E3 next month.

EP Daily Rundown for May 30, 2016
Happy Memorial Day to our friends down in the US! We’ve got a great edition of The Rundown to kick off your week, starting with the latest VR rumours about the Xbox One, some disappointing news about No Man’s Sky, a behind the scenes update on the final Maze Runner movie, some great news for fans of Fable, some rocking news about Doc Savage, and finally, yet another confirmation that Batman v Superman sucks.
It’s looking more and more likely that virtual reality is coming to the Xbox One. There have been rumours that Microsoft is working to bring VR to the console, and now the Entertainment Software Association, which runs the annual E3 gaming expo, may have outed the announcement prematurely. On the official E3 website, they’ve listed Virtual Reality for the Xbox One as a product category for four different game developers. This might just be a typo, although that seems unlikely. One of the developers listed is Rebellion, which is currently working on a Battlezone VR remake for the PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift. Given the new information on the E3 site, don’t be surprised if the game also finds its way to the Xbox One. The rumours claim that the Xbox One VR headset will be some variation of the Oculus Rift, which makes sense given that the PC version of the device is built to work with the Xbox One controller. The Rift might also work with the rumoured new versions of the Xbox One, which have been rumoured for months. If all of these rumours are true, expect Microsoft to make everything official during their E3 press conference on June 13.

Yep, we’re going to have to wait a little longer to play No Man’s Sky. The highly-anticipated space exploration game has been delayed. It was slated to hit the PC and PS4 in June, but will now land on August 9. Developer Hello Games says that they need the extra two months to give a little more polish to the game, so thankfully the wait won’t be that much longer. Some people are overreacting though. Designer Sean Murray says that he and the rest of the team have received numerous death threats following the delay. Receiving online death threats is obviously not cool, and people should remember that it’s a serious crime to make them, even if you’re joking. Hopefully law enforcement will find those responsible. For everyone else, you can learn more about No Man’s Sky by watching our interview with Sean Murray on the screen or in the description below.
No Man’s Sky isn’t the only thing being pushed back. Twentieth Century Fox has officially delayed the final Maze Runner film The Death Cure by an entire year. It was originally scheduled to land in February 2017, but will now arrive in January 2018. The reason for the delay is pretty tragic: lead actor Dylan O’Brien was injured in an accident while filming earlier this year, and shooting has been postponed until he recovers. The good news is that, since the studio is confident enough to set a new release date, it means that they know O’Brien will be out of the hospital within a certain time frame; it was unclear just how serious his injuries were until now. Hopefully he’ll make a full recovery soon.
The Fable franchise is coming back from the dead in a new form. Earlier this year, Microsoft shocked the game industry by cancelling Fable Legends and closing franchise developer Lionhead Studios. Many fans were disappointed by the news, but the adventure isn’t over. Some former members of the Lionhead team have created their own company called Flaming Fowl Studios, and are continuing development on a card game called Fable Fortune, which was already in development at Lionhead before the studio closed. Microsoft has given them their blessing to continue with the project, but the developers need help. Since Microsoft is no longer funding development, the team is launching a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to cover the remaining costs. That begins tomorrow. The first gameplay footage for Fable Fortune has been released through IGN. There’s a 3D art style with battle mechanics similar to the popular Warcraft card game Hearthstone, and it looks pretty cool. It’s too bad Microsoft isn’t floating the bill. If the funding is met, a beta test for the game will hit the PC and Xbox One this fall.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is officially taking on his most savage role yet. Following rumours, The Rock has officially confirmed that he’ll play the heroic adventurer Doc Savage in the upcoming movie of the same name. Described as the world’s first super hero, Doc Savage is a scientist, adventurer, and explorer who appeared in countless pulp novels and radio serials in the 1930s and 40s, and served as the inspiration for a wide range of characters including Superman, Indiana Jones, and Tony Stark. The new movie is being directed and co-written by Iron Man 3 director Shane Black, who’s been developing the project for several years. Both The Rock and Shane Black say that they want to play up the more eccentric aspects of the character, and given Black’s ability to write clever and witty dialogue, expect the film to have plenty of humour.
Batman’s latest movie was so bad, even his loyal butler Alfred has disowned him. Speaking with British tabloid The Daily Mail, Batman v Superman actor Jeremy Irons, who played Alfred Pennyworth, admits that the film deserved the critical panning it received, adding that the story was very muddled and overstuffed with too many ideas, characters, and subplots. Most people, including yours truly, have had similar problems with the movie, and it was so poorly received that Warner Bros did a massive reshuffling of its DC film team in the weeks after its release. There’s still a glimmer of hope though. Jeremy Irons says that the next DC film he’s in will be much more streamlined and linear. That sounds like a good start, but hopefully the portrayal of the characters will be more accurate as well.

EP Daily Rundown for June 1, 2016
Why did the chicken cross the road? To get a new Rundown, of course! Today we discuss the delay of the ranked competitive mode for Blizzard's Overwatch, have an early look at the latest Skylanders game, find out who might direct the the next James Bond movie, have new details on the X-Men TV series Legion, get an update on the Star Wars spinoff movie Rogue One, and finally, have some bad news for anyone excited to play GTA or other Take-Two games in virtual reality.

Overwatch players are going to have to wait a little longer for one of the game’s most anticipated features.Blizzard has revealed that the game’s ranked competitive mode will not be coming to the PC until mid-to-late July, while the console version doesn’t yet have a release window at all. The ranked competitive mode was included in the closed beta test for the game, but Blizzard says they need more time to polish the final version. For those of you who don’t spend a lot of time playing games online, ranked competitive play is a more intense version of normal PvP that’s based around a system of divisions and tiers, giving players the chance to rank up and collect rewards much faster than normal. Most online games have something like it, so the sooner it comes to Overwatch, the better.

It looks like the toys-to-life genre is alive and kicking. Activision has announced an all-new game in their annual Skylanders series. This one is called Skylanders Imaginators, and the thing that sets it apart is that, for the first time, players will be able to create and customize their own in-game characters. Since this is a toys-to-life game, the creation system will work alongside new toys called Creation Crystals, which are bought in stores and give you the ability to create one character within the game. That character is then tied to that Creation Crystal,

which means players, or their parents, will need to buy a new Crystal everytime they want to make a new character. This is can obviously mean a lot of money Activision, although the toys-to-life genre as a whole isn’t always as lucrative as you might think. Disney recently cancelled their rival franchise Disney Infinity, so the fact that Skylanders is still doing well is good news for fans. Skylanders Imaginators will launch October 16 on consoles and the PC.

A pair of fresh young faces might be joining her majesty’s secret service for the next 007 movie. Last month, reports surfaced that Loki himself Tom Hiddleston is being considered to take over the role of James Bond in the super spy’s next film. Now, Britain’s Radio Times reports that the new film might be helmed by Danish director Susanne Bier. She recently directed Hiddleston in the miniseries The Night Manager, which is also a spy thriller about a British secret agent, so she seems like an obvious choice. If Susanne Bier does end up directing the new Bond film, it would be the first movie in the franchise directed by a woman, which will likely piss off a lot of sexist idiots online.

Keep in mind that no official announcements have been made, and there’s still a chance that Daniel Craig might return as 007 for another mission. We’ll keep you up to date on the latest intel.

The next stage in the evolution of the X-Men franchise is a live-action TV series. FX has officially ordered the new TV series Legion, set in the X-Men cinematic universe. The first season will consist of eight episodes, with the first scheduled to premiere in early 2017.
Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens will play the titular mutant Legion, who, as any Marvel Comics fan will tell you, is a powerful mutant and son of Professor Xavier. He’s sort of an anti-hero who tries to do good, but suffers from dissociative identity disorder, which can make him do bad things. Expect the show to have a more serious tone than the X-Men movies, and since it’s on FX, don’t be surprised if there’s more swearing and violence as well.

This may not be the only live-action X-show on the way. Fox is developing a second one called X-Men Hellfire, but it’s unclear if that will ever be greenlit. It looks like the disturbance behind the scenes of the latest Star Wars adventure isn’t as great as suspected.

Yesterday, rumours surfaced that the spin-off film Rogue One is getting a series of reshoots this summer, with some outlets reporting that Disney is having major problems with the film. That might not be true from a certain point of view. According to The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, the situation isn’t nearly as serious as suspected, and the reshoots are only being done to add a bit more humor. It seems the first cut was a little too dark and had a tone similar to a war drama, which is apparently not the film Disney is looking for.

Keep in mind that most big movies go through reshoots, including last year’s The Force Awakens, so there’s no reason to have a bad feeling about this. There might be yet another reason for the reshoots. There are rumours that the film may include a cameo appearance by a young Han Solo, who’s set to be played by Hail Caesar actor Alden Ehrenreich in his own solo film in 2018. As much as we like Captain Solo, it seems a bit odd that he’d be involved with the Rebel Alliance before the events of the original Star Wars film.
We’ll just have to wait and see what happens. Rogue One drops out of hyperspace this December.Big game franchises like Grand Theft Auto, Borderlands, and XCOM might not embrace virtual reality anytime soon. Speaking at a recent conference, CEO Strauss Zelnick of Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of big game publishers Rockstar and 2K, downplayed the prospects of VR gaming.

He says that virtual reality is just too expensive right now, and most people aren’t going to spend thousands of dollars on an entertainment device that requires its own room. Ouch. He adds that VR might be exciting in the future, but it remains to be seen if it will actually take off.

This seems to cast a lot of doubt on the possibility of big Take Two franchises coming to VR devices. Through their subsidiaries, Take Two controls GTA and Red Dead Redemption, along with Borderlands, XCOM, Civilization, BioShock, Mafia, and all of the 2K sports titles… just to name a few. There are plenty of other titles coming to VR this year, so if the industry does take off, maybe that will change his mind.

EP Daily Rundown for June 29, 2016

We have a shocking Rundown today starting with details on the playable pre-alpha demo for the new System Shock game.
Then we have early rumblings about Nintendo entering virtual reality, some great news for Overwatch players, hands-on
with the latest on the Xbox One Elite Controller, a look at the newest DLC for Call of Duty, and finally, we troll you with a new animated movie.

Remember Citadel! You can start playing the new System Shock game right now. A pre-alpha demo for the upcoming reboot of the genre-defining first-person RPG is now available to download on Steam and GOG. It offers about 10-15 minutes of gameplay that’s designed to give players a brief taste of what the final game will be like when it’s released next year. Keep in mind that this is a pre-alpha demo and things are still in the early stages of development, so you may encounter a few technical issues. The developers are releasing the demo at such an early stage because they want to get people interested in the game’s Kickstarter campaign, which just launched yesterday. Follow the link below this video to check it out. The original System Shock was released in 1994 and helped kick off the first-person RPG genre, leading to other games like Deus Ex and BioShock. Many of the original developers, including producer Warren Spector, are working on the remake, and they want to recapture the same gameplay style with modern visuals. More power to them.
You might soon be able to enter the Mushroom Kingdom in virtual reality. Nintendo is interested in making VR games. That’s according to Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, who recently told investors that they’re researching the core technology behind VR. He adds that one concern they have is with play time; they want to make sure that players can safely wear a VR headset for extended periods. This makes sense given that Nintendo’s last attempt at VR, the Virtual Boy, was a complete disaster mainly because you couldn’t wear it for very long without getting a headache. Hopefully any new Nintendo VR games will be much better received. It’s unclear if the new Nintendo console, codenamed the NX, will have any VR capabilities when it launches next year, but we’ll let you know when more details come in. Nintendo’s rival Sony is launching the PlayStation VR headset this October, and Microsoft is rumoured to be partnering with Oculus to bring VR to their more powerful Xbox One Scorpio next year.
Overwatch is finally getting its most requested feature. The game’s highly-anticipated ranked competitive multiplayer mode launches today on the PC. Blizzard originally promised that it would be released sometime this month, so they made it, just barely. Ranked competitive modes are an important part of many online games. They’re basically a more intense version of normal PvP based around a system of divisions and tiers, and players love them because you can rank up faster and collect more rewards than normal. Even though the mode is out now on the PC, it still isn’t out for the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. Blizzard says they’re finished, but currently going through the necessary approval process for both systems. They hope it will be out on consoles next week.
It looks like everyone wants to get their hands on the Xbox One Elite Controller. Xbox head Phil Spencer has revealed that they’ve just sold their one millionth pro controller. For comparison, the Xbox One itself has sold an estimated 18 million units worldwide, which means 1 in 18 players wanted the Elite Controller. It’s a sexier version of the normal Xbox controller, offering more precision and a customizable button layout. It launched last year and was initially sold out, with Microsoft later admitting that they underestimated the high demand. They’re not done with new controllers. The standard Xbox One controller is getting customizable color options that users can design themselves on the Xbox website, with orders slated to begin shipping this September.
An all-new Call of Duty game is about the deploy, but Activision hasn’t left behind the last game in the franchise. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 has a new batch of DLC dropping July 12. It’s called Descent, and includes four new multiplayer maps along with a new episode in the zombies single-player story. And because fighting off waves of the undead isn’t over-the-top enough, the new episode will also feature a massive, fire-breathing dragon. Because of a timed exclusivity deal between Activision and Sony, the new DLC will deploy first on the PS4, with the Xbox One and PC set to follow at a later date.
If you’re holding out for an all-new Call of Duty experience, the futuristic Infinite Warfare is coming this November. It takes place hundreds of years in the future, and will see Earthlings battle off-world colonists for resources, complete with zero-gravity shooting and space dogfights. I wonder how they’ll squeeze zombies into that.
Hollywood will turn anything into a movie these days, and sometimes it feels like they’re trolling us. Take a look at the first trailer for the new animated movie Trolls, based on the big-haired dolls that haven’t really been popular since the 1990s. The new film is made by DreamWorks Animation, the same studio behind Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon, and it features all the bright colors and loud music that audiences have come to expect from a modern animated movie. There’s also loads of celebrity voices, including Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake, which I guess is not a bad thing. Trolls will troll audiences in November, making it the first film from DreamWorks Animation since their much publicised acquisition by NBCUniversal earlier this year. Hopefully parents don’t get Trolls confused with the infamous horror movie Troll 2. That would be unfortunate.

How VR Could Bring About The End Of Game Clones . August 6, 2016 . 4:15pm

Mirage Interactive CEO explains how VR is encouraging innovation and creativity in game development.

12 comments Read >

There’s a distinction between games that are inspired by or pay homage to other games, and the game clones that are clear rip-offs. Sometimes the knock-off may become a runaway success, and other times it can get tangled up in a legal battle.

However, it’s possible the emergence of VR could encourage more studios to take an innovative approach to game development. In an interview with VRScout, Mirage Interactive CEO Ke Wang explains why game cloning is prevalent, particularly within the Chinese development community, and how VR is changing the development process for some companies.

When asked why Chinese developers often copy other successful titles, Wang reveals the choice is not really up to the devs themselves. “Chinese game developers really hate to copy other people’s games,” Wang explains. “The problem is, it’s not up to them. Usually the investor of the company forces them to copy because it is profitable.”

Investors looking to break into the emerging VR market, though, have to settle for an development approach that encourages creativity rather than copying. “In VR, there are not that many games to copy, so developers are free to experiment and make new experiences,” Wang continues. “Once the trend for game developers show that being innovative will be more profitable than copying, then copying will become poison.”

Wang has charted the course for the development of Mirage Interactive’s own upcoming VR title, Heroes of the Seven Seas, with an original gameplay experience in mind. He also seems hopeful that VR can bring about an end to game cloning throughout the industry. “Mirage Interactive has never copied any game,” he remarks. “Hopefully copying games will be terminated in ten to twenty years.”
