Starting August 26 and running through October 10, Bandai Namco will host a Mobile Suit Gundam virtual reality experience at its “VR Zone: Project i Can” virtual reality center in Tokyo.


The 1,000 yen, eight-minute experience, dubbed Gundam VR: Daiba Assault, puts the player right in front of a battle between the Life-Size Gundam that stands in the Festival Plaza of DiverCity Tokyo Plaza and an enemy Mobile Suit. Both machines are depicted in actual size, and while the player won’t be in the cockpit, he or she will cling to the hand of the Life-Size Gundam, and experience the shocks and tremors that come with the battle.

One of the biggest game makers in the world is finally embracing virtual reality. 2K Games has announced their very first virtual reality game. It’s called Carnival Games VR, and is a remake of the mini-game collection of the same name that was released on the Wii and original DS way back in 2007. The new version will work with all three of the big VR headsets: the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and upcoming PlayStation VR, giving players the ability to try out 12 different carnival-style games in their living rooms. The fact that 2K is embracing virtual reality at all might come as a surprise; earlier this year, Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of 2K’s parent company Take-Two Interactive, expressed skepticism about VR, saying that it’s way too expensive for most gamers. Perhaps releasing a smaller title like Carnival Games is their way of testing the waters to see how successful VR will be, so if this is a hit, we could be seeing bigger 2K titles in VR in the near future. Carnival Games VR will launch October 28.

Sega announced the latest title of Space Channel 5 with Space Channel 5 VR: Ukuki Viewing Show, an upcoming VR title to celebrate the series’ 15th anniversary that will be at TGS 2016.

In Space Channel 5 VR: Ukuuki Viewing Show, you’ll participate as a program viewer of Ulala’s report show, but it won’t be something that lets you play Space Channel 5’s rhythm game.

The game’s demo version will be available at Tokyo Game Show 2016’s “Linked-door loves Space Channel 5” next-generation VR multi-communication demonstration event.

While the demo version will use the VIVE device, its release date and compatible hardware will be announced on a later date.

EVE Online studio CCP Games says VR will pick up a few years from now

CCP CEO Hilmar Petursson told DICE Europe attendees that the company is on track to “break even” in the VR field, according to a report from GamesIndustry.biz today.


“I think we’re now, by the end of this year, we’ll have invested $30 million into virtual reality games,” he told listeners at his keynote address. “And we’re just about seeing a path to break even… We’ll probably hit it in a few months.”


Readers will recall that in November of last year, the company once famous only for sci-fi sandbox EVE Online announced it had raised $30 million from investors and venture capitalists intended to “drive innovation in VR as the technology begins to transform the entertainment industry.” EVE Gunjack, its VR arcade shooter, launched for the Samsung Gear VR a week later, followed by launches on the Oculus Rift and Vive this year. EVE Valkyrie is playable on PC now and is expected to launch for PlayStation VR a month from today.

Some of the people behind Disney Infinity are taking on what might be the future of gaming. CastAR, a tech company focused on augmented reality and virtual reality, has opened up a new studio in Salt Lake City using many of the former members of Disney Infinity developer Avalanche Software. The new studio, like the rest of the CastAR team, will create “mixed reality” games, which are games that use a combination of augmented reality and virtual reality. They’re brought to life using the proprietary CastAR headset, which looks like a cross between the Oculus Rift and Microsoft Hololens. Pretty cool. There’s no word yet on what mixed reality games the former Disney Infinity developers might be working on, but we can’t wait to find out more.

 Google is taking phones and virtual reality into their own hands with some new gadgets. The tech giant held a big keynote event earlier today where they announced their new smartphone and a slew of other devices. The new phone is called the Pixel, and is meant to replace their Nexus line, and while the Nexus phones were made by Google and Samsung, the Pixel is designed entirely by Google, both inside and out. It has all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a modern smartphone, including a fancy camera that Google says is better than the iPhone 7. It also has Google Assistant, a new voice-activated AI that is basically their version of Apple’s Siri. The coolest thing about the Pixel phone is that it’s made with virtual reality in mind. It will run VR games and apps thanks to Daydream VR, a new Android-based VR software platform that Google first announced earlier this year. You’ll also need a physical headset, so Google has announced the Daydream View, their first non-cardboard VR display. It’s kind of like the Samsung Gear VR, and is basically an empty shell that the phones will slip into. The thing that sets it apart is that the Daydream View headset will eventually work with multiple smartphones, not just the Pixel, and the Daydream VR software platform will also be compatible with multiple devices. Keeping everything open like this is how the Android platform won over such a big portion of the smartphone market, so doing the same thing with virtual reality could make Google the new VR king. The Pixel will be the first phone to work with the Daydream View, and they both hit stores next month.

Here's a new edition of The Rundown to be thankful for this Thanksgiving! Today, we have a recap of the coolest VR announcements from the annual Oculus Connect conference. Oculus has new plans for the future of virtual reality. Yesterday, the VR company and Facebook subsidiary held their third annual Oculus Connect conference, where they made several big announcements. First up, they unveiled a standalone VR headset that doesn’t require a PC in order to run. It will still offer motion tracking and decent graphics, but because it doesn’t need a computer, there won’t be any cumbersome cables tying you down. Cables are easily the biggest annoyance with VR, so getting rid of them is big step in the right direction. The standalone headset is still just a prototype at this point, so there’s no telling how many years it will take to find its way to stores.
Since you still need a PC to use the Rift for the time being, Oculus is making it a little easier. They’ve built new software for the existing headset that will allow it to run on PCs with much lower system specs, all without changing any of the hardware inside the headset itself. How is this possible? The reason the Rift needs expensive PC gaming hardware is because it requires games to run at a high frame rate. The new software basically generates extra frames while you’re playing, which means games will appear to be running at a higher framerate than what your PC is actually capable of. This will allow the Rift to run on less expensive PCs, which makes VR a lot more affordable.
Next up, the Oculus Rift is getting something that it probably should have had from day one. The long-awaited Oculus Touch motion controllers for the Rift will be available on December 6, and set you back $200 USD. Like what’s already available for other headsets, the Oculus Touch controllers will allow users to move their hands around and grab objects within the game world, which is a big part of VR immersion. The controllers will also come with a camera sensor, and users will have the option of buying a second sensor, which will allow them to get up out of their chairs and walk around within a predetermined area, which is also already available on other headsets. Just don’t trip on the cables.
Because Oculus is owned by Facebook, they announced two new social VR apps. They’re called Oculus Rooms and Oculus Parties, and will allow users to interact with their friends inside a virtual space using custom avatars. You can chat, watch movies, play mini games, or just hang out as if you’re in the same room, and this is something Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he was interested in doing when they bought Oculus in 2014. The apps will be available on the Samsung Gear VR soon, and the Rift early next year.
Finally, three big games were announced for the Oculus Rift. Gears of War creator Epic Games unveiled Robo Recall, a first-person shooter where players take the role of a robot battling other robots. It looks pretty fun, and there will be plenty of humour. Epic isn’t the only big game maker taking on VR. Metro 2033 developer 4A Games announced Arktika.1, a shooter set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. It looks very similar to the Metro games, and the mutant monsters will probably be a lot more terrifying in VR. The third big game is called Lone Echo, and is being made by The Order: 1886 developer Ready at Dawn. It drops players into the role of a futuristic astronaut in zero-g environments, so you’ll need to grab onto the side of your ship in order to move around. All three of these games are being developed exclusively for the Rift, and will use the new Touch controllers. They arrive next year.
All of these big announcements from the Oculus Connect conference indicate one thing: virtual reality is just getting started, and there are some very interesting things to look forward to in the future.

Developed by franchise creator Croteam, it promises to deliver all the violent, over-the-top mayhem and not-so-serious humor of the other Serious Sam games, this time with the added realism and immersion of virtual reality. Right now it’s only playable on the HTC Vive, but support for the Oculus Rift will be added when that headset’s motion-sensing Touch controls are released in December. Keep in mind that this is still just an Early Access version of the game, so it hasn’t been finished yet. The final version of Serious Sam VR is slated to arrive in about six months with more weapons, levels, and gameplay mechanics. Even though Serious Sam VR has the subtitle The Last Hope, the developers say that this won’t be their last foray into the world of virtual reality, so expect more VR games from them in the future.
