Loved this episode. For the first time in the show's history there are no characters who annoy me. I hated Carol last season but this one episode made me like her. Great action, great drama. Possibly the best episode of the series yet.

Alexandra Breckenridge Joins ‘The Walking Dead’ As Recurring
by Nellie Andreeva

Alexandra Breckenridge (American Horror Story) has landed a recurring role on Season 5 of AMC’s The Walking Dead. She has an option to become a regular on the zombie drama, which shattered another ratings record with its fifth season premiere. As usual, details about the character are being kept under wraps. On the breakdown, her character is listed as Samantha, an attractive, strong, smart, charming and articulate woman who also has a vulnerable side. She’s a mother with a bohemian spirit, and a talented artist. The Walking Dead producers sometimes use fake characters names to disguise the real identity of characters from the graphic novel that are joining the series, so it is unclear whether Breckenridge’s heroine will still be named Samantha when she makes her debut on the show later this season. The Walking Dead already has been renewed for Season 6. Breckenridge is repped by Gersh, Mosaic, and attorney Joel McKuin.
A mother? Jessie Anderson, maybe?

God I love this woman.

He's not Negan. Kirkman confirmed it on Twitter after the show aired last night. The guy in the car during the flashback was the same guy they tried to save from a boxcar later (the crazy guy with the tattoos on his face). He was eaten by a walker, so they can't make him Negan because he's dead now.

It was a poorly done scene. It was too dark to really notice the tattoos, and it didn't help that he looked completely different than what he did when we first saw him. Also, how did they not think people would mistake him for Negan?

On the Taking Dead, they confirmed that Mary was Gareth's mom; so, seeing that she was repeatedly raped, judging by the last scene, it's no wonder he's screwed up in the head.

Yeah, i agree. If it weren't for them bringing that up on the Talking Dead, i seriously doubt anyone would have made the connection.

Folks, just remember to use spoiler tags if you're going to discuss shows that haven't aired yet.

I noticed the tattoos, and the point of the scene was to show what happened to the people at Terminus and show why they turned into what they did. It's not a poorly done scene just because the guy wasn't the person you thought it might be.

The vast majority of the viewing audience...and I mean the VAST majority...have never heard of Negan. For those who have, there is no reason to think that every random bit part actor who appears on the show is him.

Also, as I recall from the comics, Negan didn't condone rape, which is what the guy was doing to the Terminus women in the box car. That's another hint that the guy wasn't Negan.

But that's not why I think it was poorly done. I think it was poorly done because it wasn't very clear that this was supposed to be the guy from before. Even in a frame like this, the facial tattoos aren't immediately noticeable. I'd bet a lot of people didn't make the connection.

Also, regarding his similarity in looks to Negan:

Many mistook the person in Gareth's flashback for Negan, but turns out he actually was the man Glenn saved from the storage container.

According to Hurd, she had a sense that confusion was coming. "I have to say, when I was on set and I looked at him, I went, 'I know people are going to see him and look at him and say: This is the guy from the comic book

And I think quite a few people did. The thing is, it wasn't meant to be a red herring, or a visual gag, it was just an accident. But it's kind of funny that they would inadvertently make him look like an eagerly anticipated villain.

After watching the episode again today I did get that it was the same guy, but it took multiple viewings to catch it. :(

Still, the point of the scene was showing what happened to the Terminus people that made them turn into what they became. It wasn’t to solve the mystery of who the guy in the boxcar was. The guy in the boxcar is dead now, but Gareth surely isn’t. The scene was setting up what he is now.

Oh, I agree. They wanted to show, I think, that maybe that kind of turnaround to evil could happen to anyone given enough stress. :) No one just wakes up one morning an evil cannibalistic a hole.
