The "What You Do or Don't Believe" Thread

Yeah, I really need to check it out. I remember thinking of picking it up when it came out, but I already had WAY too many comics I was reading week-to-week. But I'll definitely give it a read now.

I just hope, more than anything, this movie has a truly epic feel like Thor looks like it will be. I think if we get a Superman film that looks something like that, people will be chomping at the bit to see it.

Yeah do it really is fantastic

You know I had zero interest in Thor and then I saw the trailer and I was totally blown away so if Man of Steel can top that trailer then thats a first step in the right direction.

Yikes really? I never thought Thor sounded like a good idea, and the trailer confirmed my thoughts. Interesting how there are such mixed reactions on Thor. Wonder how the general public will feel.

I have no interest in Thor, even after seeing the trailer. I think Captin America looks cool though.

Thor looks ok, albeit still somewhat cheesy with all the shiny (plastic)armor going on. It would've worked alot better if they had used the actual mythology and made a gritty LOTR-like swords&sorcery-fantasy instead of Masters Of The Universe.

Captain America on the other hand looks silly as hell. This character just doesnt work for live action IMO and Evans is no Rogers. The suit in the trailer looks "fat" and cheesy, but I imagine it'll look better later on in the movie. I hope they dont make the 2nd World War out to be some "gay"(joyful) adventure with cheeky americans.

Rant over...

I imagine the general public is more anticipating Fast Five. By a wide margin.

My friends all seemed to think the trailer was pretty cool.

To each his own, I guess. I think both Thor and Cap look promising.

I was never a fan of the comic Thor either, but I think the movie looks great.

I want to see Captain America beat the crap out of Henry Pym like he did in The Ultimates. While Pym is in giant form. That was satisfying.

Pym was a wife-beating, deranged piece of trash, while Captain was one of the moral centers of the series.

We'll have to wait for an Ultimates movie. I can dream.

I'll give it a chance but I'll wait for the DVD. Green Lantern and Captin America are the superheroes getting my money this summer.

What I do believe...
-The majority of the movie will be Superman/Clark Kent's Origin.
-Lois will be in the movie, regardless if she is not the lead.
-Martha Kent will be the main lead (she is the one who teaches the morals to Superman)
-Clark will be a traveling reporter.

What I don't believe...
-Ursa is in the movie. (Ursa was created in the 1978 Superman. She did not appear in comics till around 2006. She is based of Faora, so they would Faora if anything).
-Zod will be in the movie. They are going to try and be original with the villains. Not the same ones from the older movies.

Hopes...
-Hopefully we will see Lana Lang(perhaps she will be the female lead) since it is origin.
-Lois will still have a big role in the movie.
-Update suit.

That was a great moment from the Ultimates

So...

Picked up Birthright last night and read about half of it... would have probably read the whole thing but it was late and I had work today. Very good story though; you guys were totally right. I've reversed my opinion of the Africa stuff... it works really well in the series and I could easily see it being used on film. Everything about the series works really well so far, IMO... I especially like the lightheartedness throughout (Martha being a UFO/Area 51 nut, Lois being a tad crazy, Jimmy being a borderline stalker). It reminds me a lot of what made JJ Abrams' Star Trek work feel so refreshing and fun. It's precisely the way a Superman movie should be, IMO. Plus, Birthright Supes even LOOKS like Henry Cavill to some degree.

Only thing I don't like is the sideburns, lol.

Good to know your enjoying it :D Totally get what you mean about it been refeshing ala JJ Abrams Star Trek

Yeah those sideburns are a little elvis ha ha :D

LOL, yeah.

I had a thought about the Africa stuff too... something I hadn't seen brought up here yet. Perhaps the reason that three blonde European actresses were rumored for that mystery female lead might be an indication that they were looking to cast a South African character? Obviously their accents and a South African accent aren't the same, but there are similarities. And many South Africans are blonde. Just a thought.

Thats actually a very good thought and a good possibility.

I'm in the same boat.

Thanks, yeah... I'm not generally a fan of introducing new love interests in movie (I kind of hated Rachel Dawes) but I would have no problem with something like that if it fit the story well. Better than bringing in Ursa again for God knows what reason. (IMO)

I do believe that the villain will be an alien, but which one is hard to tell.

Brainiac is the most likely, but also think that Eradicator, Intergang, Lobo, Mongul or another could fit in.

She could just be with him in Africa & who knows maybe she will die

Lobo would never work in live action

Yeah, I guess it might not be a bad thing. What Showtime posted up there sounds pretty good actually. I guess I should read Birthright.

Anyway, I guess we'll just have to see what happens with that. What I wonder about the most is what they said in that recent report that Nolan and Goyer came to WB with something that they supposedly "couldn't believe" WB hadn't explored in a Superman movie. If that's true, I really wonder what they could be. Political power struggles in Africa (or wherever) really doesn't seem like it would be it...

Maybe, though. I don't know how much of a comic book fan Nolan is, but it could simply be a villain or a comic plot that he feels they should have adapted (like the entire Birthright story or something).

If I'm not mistaken, I don't think that there's ever been any type of animated or live action adaption that covered the days where Clark had traveled around the world to find "himself" before he became Superman.

The Donner Film just had Clark going from Smallville to the Fortress for 12 years before emerging out as Superman. Smallville has just covered Clark's transition from Smallville to Metropolis. Lois and Clark started with Clark arriving in Metropolis for the first time, with the exposition and dialogue revealing that Clark had traveled the world but never really diving into it or having any of his travels have a deep effect on his development towards becoming a hero.

Honestly, I've been wanting to see an origin film that would really cover this part of Superman's life, to see on how a man from humble beginnings came to the conclusion towards using his powers for the better of mankind in a believable way.

And on a sidenote, I seriously hope that they don't reduce Lois to a minor role or have her painted in a unfavorable light like the films have. Like with any film that's meant to start a franchise, the first film will say it all on what fans could expect from this franchise, so I would hope that they get her characterization right and not lower her importance in favor of a lesser character in the comics or an entirely made up one altogether.

As much as Snyder likes to direct fantastical characters and loves CGI, I find it hard to believe that he would make a movie like Superman and just have someone like Zod as the main villain.

Not that Zod isn't fantastical in any way (he's a freaking alien, after all) but not as much as one like Brainiac, Metallo, etc. The latter would require heavy fantastical visualization, which is what Snyder's modus operandi is. I mean, look at Watchmen with the character of Doctor Manhattan and now look at his first original movie that's not an adaptation of a comic or anything... it has dragons and all types of fantastical creatures in it.

Now, I'm not here to say that I believe General Zod won't be in this movie, because I do believe there's a possibility he is. But IF he is, then I truly don't believe he will be the only villain.

I have no idea of course, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if we get Brainiac, Zod, Ursa, and of course Lex and Intergang. WB needs this film to go gangbusters at the B.O., so I believe we will get multiple villians like we saw in BB and TDK, along with some pretty intense action.
