The "What You Do or Don't Believe" Thread

Yup. In some ways (I stress SOME ways) I actually think it's better. It's visually stunning, very well acted, and it keeps the story intact - yes, he made some changes and excised some things but if he didn't, the movie would have been 8 hours long. But try telling that to some brilliant Oscar-winning filmmakers who post here on this board.

OMG SYNder Rapped ALLen More's wurk it Wuz Horirble not Enough Bernies and no Pirate comics, plus Dr. Manhatten's weenie was Too Big Epic Fail Sack Znyder suckss.

I don't know why Watchmen gets such a bad rap, I love it. I thought it was better than the comic in some ways.

Arrogant, anal-retentive fanboys who each had a "perfect" vision of how the movie was supposed to be, and since Snyder deviated from their BRILLIANT idea (which was probably not fully formed and not even remotely feasible), they think it sucks.

I dont think the film is better than the graphic novel... BUT, I do enjoy the movie. The movie feels "rushed" to me... but I think Snyder did really well with time constraints and the length of the material.

Double post.

To be blunt, the reason I say the movie is better than the comic in some ways is because the squid freakin' sucks. It's so stupid, everytime I Iook at it I think of the ending of the TV mini-series IT.

I much prefer the film to the novel

I'd like to see them start with Birthright then mix in some of the Earth One elements like their basis for the confrontation and instead of the new villian fall back to Brainiac or someone on that level even Zod could work.

The Ursa rumor makes me cringe though.

I agree that it should start off with birthright, but I don't think it should really go the earth one route. However, brainiac is my ideal villain.

This is what I think, Brainiac is the villian, he travels throughout the galaxy collecting knowledge or whatever from different worlds. He takes a piece of their culture (usually shrinks down and steals their most developed city) and then destroys what remains of the planet. This happens to krypton, and from their goes one of two ways.

1. Brainiac after discovering their was a survivor of the planet krypton, he travels to earth in order to destroy the last son of krypton.

or 2. after 25 years or whatever Earth happens to be the next planet on his path and Superman does everything possible to make sure it doesn't happen. Maybe start out this way and then Brainiac gets even more involved when he finds out Earth has been harboring a survivor of Krypton

I wouldn't go so far as to say that it sucks but it definitely would have been the wrong choice to include it in the movie. Because to do that, you have to add the whole other subplot with the writer who disappears. And that would have added AT LEAST another 15 minutes to an already lengthy movie.

And there are other things that were removed that totally made sense. The Black Freighter stuff is cool but again, that's another half hour and it really isn't essential to the story. Yes, it parallels it well, but you don't NEED it. The Bernie stuff was also good but that was one aspect of the graphic novel that I got sick of after a while. It's like... hmmm... I really want to see what Nite-Owl and Rohrshach are up to, but first let's read three pages of this old jackass complaining while this dumb kid reads a comic book.

it was just too long and too much talking without action in the first hour. and who is the lead? it was like watching 4 / 5 separate stories about each of the superheroes. most of all, all of them ain't cool like ironman / xmen kinda cool. their costumes r very cool though.

Brainiac shrinking cities would come to life well on the big screen IMO. I love the idea of Brainiac as the main villain but lets stray away from the shrunken cities like Kandor.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that you've never read the graphic novel.

Though, it shouldn't be essential that to read it to enjoy the film, so I'll just kind of spell a few things out for you. Watchmen wasn't intended to be like Batman or Iron Man or even X-Men. While some of those comics and films attempted to be somewhat of a social commentary at times, they were also attempting to be cool, action-packed superhero stories. Watchmen was attempting (in both the book and the film) to show us what might have really happened had superheroes existed. How it would have affected history. How the public's opinion of them might have turned.

Also, the lack of a central character and the multiple stories was because well, though Rohrshach is central, he's a little hard to empathize with at times (though he's easy to sympathize with). However, we can easily empathize with the nerdy and insecure Nite-Owl. We can empathize with the confused and depressed Silk Spectre. We can even empathize with Dr. Manhattan despite his power and his growing disinterest in humanity.

And moreover, it's "team" story, so to speak. Obviously we don't see them all flying around in a jet together like the X-Men, going to face off with some all-powerful bad guy. But this story is more akin to something like Pulp Fiction or Snatch, where you have multiple story lines converging.
